anyone know how to electroplate?
    #21846717 - 06/23/15 04:43 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

Im trying to tin-zinc plate nuts and bolts.  Starting out im trying to just tin plate and its not going very well.  I had tin on the positive side, and a copper wire on the negative, nothing happened, just some bubbles on the tin.  And at the surface just a line of green on the wire, guessing copper oxidized there.

So then i put tin on both the positive and negative to see what would happen, i noticed some clear/white crystles formed on the positive lead, so i thought maybe that was tin falling out of suspension and i thought ok ill try the copper wire again.  same thing happened as before.

So then i did the tin/tin again overnight to see what would happen, i wake up and the positive lead is blackish that was under electrolyte, the other lead looks like normal..... and this time i see no crystles anywhere.

anyone know wtf is going on?  The fact that there are bubbles on the positive lead means tin must be leaving it right?  BUT, if tin was leaving it, it should be shiney from newly exposed metal, instead its BLACK.  From what ive read, if i have my voltage to high, it can cause burning, which is what this looks like, BUT....this is the positive lead......it doesnt make sense, if anything was going to be burned black it should be the negative

im wondering if maybe my electrolyte isn't strong enough to pull the tin off, im using vinager and peroxide with some salt/sugar very small amount.  but im a little worried to use anything else for fear of killing myself with toxic fumes or something

Your electrolyte had to be a salt if the metal you want to plate. If you want to plate tin then the electrolyte needs to be a tin salt.

If the volrage is too high you generate hydrogen as well as the metal at the cathode and the metal won't stick to the surface. Different metals have different overvoltages. The more reactive metals have a higher overvoltage. I don't think you can overvoltage zinc.

Your tin anode is black because you are generating chlorine gas at it by using table salt,

Your best electrolyte would be SnSO4.

so in otherwords i was creating a toxic gas anyway, awesome.  i thought it smelled a little funny but i thought it was just the tin smelling that way.

As for the electrolyte being a salt of tin, i thought i was creating it by letting the tin sit in the acid, and also when i had the tin on positive and negative?  thats what people do with copper, i thought it worked the same way with tin?

is there a way to make SnSO4?

You are creating a tin salt when you do that but how do you expect the tin ions to find their way to the other anode? You need tin ions already in the solution.

Same thing with copper. You need a copper electrolyte to plate copper

Tin doesn't react well with acids. It would be hard to make snso4

you say the same thing with copper but then how are these people getting it to work then?  wouldn't they be having the same problem with the copper getting it to find its way to the other anode?

http://www.instructables.com/id/High-Quality-Copper-Plating/

thats the guide i was following, they don't add any metal salts to the water, they are pulling it from the metal somehow

it seems like this tin is going to be a pain in the ass, only place to find that snso4 is all the way in europe lol eastwood has a kit but its $80 dam dollars.....

is just zinc my next best option for rust protection on nuts and bolts?  will the copper guide work with zinc pennys or will i have the same problem?

it looks like the acid i need to do it might be sulphuric acid instead of vinager?  if i soak it in that, would i create the electrolyte needed to do it?  looks like some drain cleaners use it, and according to wiki its a watched chemical:confused:

You can get 35% sulfuric acid at Home Depot in a box labelled battery acid.

and then i should be good to go?  just drop the tin in it, let it soak a while, then plate?  and i won't kill myself or anything?

will it work with zinc as well?

my idea to tin-zinc was to put 2 pieces of metal on the postive lead, a piece of tin(95 tin/5 antimony solder) and a piece of zinc (penny) and the mixture would "tin-zinc" my item, sound about right?

Zinc plating is usually done by dunking the object being plated in molten zinc... Aka galvanizing.

You can't plate two metals at the same time. In a mixture of metal ions, one will plate preferentially before the other.

This is how impure copper ingots are purified using electrolysis. The copper plates preferentially and the other more reactive metals stay in solution.

Video of me making zinc dust using electrolysis of a zncl2 solution. Zinc electrodes do not generate chlorine gas since the metal is so reactive it immediately forms more zncl2.

if i dunked a bolt into molten zinc or tin, it would fill all my threads up tho wouldn't it?

it looks like tin will react very slowly with surfuric acid, so if i just let it soak for a couple weeks then i would have my metal salt correct?

heat also speeds things up too, if i boiled vinegar with tin in it for a while would that work?

im just trying to think of the most practical way of doing this, whats the best way to rust protect my nuts?

copper won't work, nickle is iffy i can't remember offhand but i seem to have it stuck in my head that there are some downfalls to using it for this purpose.

whats my best safest option, preferably without having to order stuff?

You don't have to coat steel with zinc to protect it from rusting. As long as there is zinc in contact with the steel and in contact with the water, the steel will not rust. The zinc becomes a sacrificial anode. This works with aluminum and magnesium as well as zinc.

Steel hulled ships have a strip of zinc or magnesium strapped to the side of the ship and this protects the entire ship from rusting.

because it would take forever to match them up, first you gotta find the length....then the width....then the thread type..... and im pulling things apart so i keep getting more parts to do which would mean more trips to the hardware store, so in the end it would be less of a hassle to just be able to fix them at home.  Plus there's the chance of running into weird parts that can't be matched from time to time or the store just happens to be out of stock or w/e.

thats a thought on just putting zinc on the stuff, but im not really sure how i would go about that, cut pennys up into tiny pieces and glue them onto the ends of bolts?  thats about the only way i can think of doing it and that would take forever and wouldn't work well on nuts

im starting to think nickle is my only real option

i originally tried to paint them, but the paint filled the threads up, i used rust converter too, and that shit turns to rubber and its a complete pain in the ass getting it off, i bought a parts tumbler, been in there 2 days and the shit still isn't off, soaked them in vinegar and that helped some, back in the parts tumbler again to finish it off

Nickle and tin are less active than iron. Unless you coat the steel completely it will make them rust even faster.

sadly im far to stupid to read that, there was another chart like that in the guide i posted and he tried to explain how to read it and i still didn't get it but it was worded kinda funny.

on your chart, the longer the black bar, the more 'active' it is?  so a 90/10 copper nickel would be less active?

The length of the bar indicates the range of the voltage compared to a hydrogen electrode. So, magnesium will have a voltage of -1.6 to -1.7v compared to the hydrogen electrode

If possible, one solution to protect your bolts from rusting away would be to use a galvanized washer at the top of each one. You would have to replace them occassionally as the zinc in the washer will be sacrificed in place of the iron in your bolts.

Alternatively you could make little washers out of sheets of zinc or aluminum (aluminum is notorious for losing electrical contact as it corrodes though). As long as the zinc/steel interface can conduct electricity, the steel will be protected from rusting until the zinc has been consumed.

looks like zinc will work just like copper, simple vinegar, wait for it to disolve, and then plate.

Im curious if pennys will work tho, or if i need a pure source of zinc for what im doing?  pennys have 2% copper or something in them, will that screw everything up as far as protection ect?

i believe you said the most reactive metal will always plate first, so do i even need a pure source of zinc?  the guides im reading say i do, but don't mention why.  If i use a penny will it just plate zinc then? or copper or both and why didn't you mention i could plate zinc earlier?  any toxic fumes?

You have to melt the penny. The zinc inside the copper coating will melt, but the copper won't and it should fall out as a blob. Use forceps or pliers obviously.

Zinc with react with vinegar. Gotta neutralize the acid solution though, otherwise you will dissolve the plated zinc as soon as it is created.

Copper will not dissolve in acids without a source of oxygen.

I don't know how well zinc plates because it actually reacts with water, just very slowly - but just enough that zinc hydroxide hinders  good adhesion of the plate to the metal surface. Of you saw in my video, the zinc being plated sloughs of as a powder or small crystals.

watch the second video for sure start around the 1 minute mark

its what convinced me to go zinc, that and nothing else made much sense

think im gunna try to get a zinc thing for water heater or something, im not gunna melt pennys

curious question ive read that zinc is used on boats to prevent rust.  Could i put a sheet of zinc on the frame of my car, would that prevent rust on the entire thing?  or just within a few feet of the zinc sheet?

in other words how far does the zinc work?

does zinc plating cause zinc oxide fumes?

ive been plating with zinc and its been working great, ive had a few things with spots that didn't get plated or only partly plated, but ive determined most of that to be connection issues.  A bee flew into the electrolyte and its antenna's got plated i think, kinda hard to tell but part of them are colored different than the rest.

anyways just worried about fumes again.

also i read that you can use different metals at the same time, but that doesn't really help me any since the only other metal id want to use was tin but that won't strip into the vinagar.

I might try to use it as an anode anyways, maybe a very small amount will strip off, but mostly because my anodes keep falling apart because they are so thin, i basically get 22 days roughly out of them and need to make new anodes.

so yah, is the zinc making bad fumes, and if i switched to a tin anode would that create bad fumes (assuming i don't add salt this time).  I would feed zinc into the electrolyte to feed it of course

Zinc oxide is a solid. If you burn zinc, it comes off as a very delicate white fluff that remains almost perfectly suspended in air. Even if you were producing zinc oxide electroplating, it is not a volatile substance so there are no fumes. I doubt you could make any dangerous fumes electroplating with zinc acetate.

ok so my electrolyte is zinc disolved in vinagar and sugar(brightener).  I switched to a tin anode, and immediately it started foaming, the item i plated appears slightly different, it has some super shiny stuff on it which makes me think the tin actually did transfer to it and its very spikey plating on it compared to previous plates.  its smooth but has like flakes growing out of it that are super shiney.

At the end of the plating which wasn't very long, the anode was covered completely in the foam, which was very milky in appearance.

Im very worried that something might have gone wrong and some toxic fumes or something were created for all this milky foam to have formed

What voltage are you running this at? Zinc electrodes can be run at a higher voltage than tin without electrolyzing the water. I think those bubbles are oxygen from water. You don't get oxygen bubbles on zinc electrode because the oxygen reacts with the zinc, creating zinc oxide which immediately reacts with the wager to create zinc hydroxide. If you electrolye solution isn't slightly acidic then that zinc hydroxide would be visible as a cloudy substance coming off the electrode.

You can figure out what your potential fumes are based on the electrolyte and water. Your electrolyte is zinc acetate in water. The possible substances you create are zinc metal, acetic acid. Hydrogen and oxygen.

You need to worry about fumes when there is an element in the electrolye that is dangerous when liberated. Chloride to chlorine is to only thing that comes to mind. Obviously some electrolytes are toxic themselves. Zinc is not that bad in terms of metals.

im running it at 12 volts which is a little higher than some recommendations.  But even when i was using just zinc i was getting quite a few bubbles off the plates i left sitting in the bottom to feed zinc into the electrolyte with nothing connected id see a stream of bubbles comming off.

but like i said im using tin now for just the anode, so its tin metal, zinc metal, acetic acid, hydrogen, oxygen, and sugar.  but its when these things mix is when the danger comes in, and i have a hard time understanding when that might happen and what might be created.

like chloride to chlorine i mean neither of those were put it was just created.

but these tin bubbles are very different, its like a cloudy milky looking bubbles, some of the bubbles slid off the tin and they are still floating around....the stuff im making are growing pretty big crystles on them

The oxygen bubbles are probably reacting with the tin metal and making some tin hydroxide,

I don't think you can get tin to plate if there are zinc ions present, since the zinc will plate preferentially.

12 volts is way too high for electroplating. Electroplating should be done around the standard potential for that metal. Essentially electroplating is the opposite of using the metals as a battery - is very similar to recharging a battery. Probably no more than 2 volts,

ive seen plating kits that come with 4.5v, and ive seen people talk about using 6v's, i didn't really see what the harm would be in using 12 volts?  it'll just make things go quicker, with the risk of the plating 'burning' right?  so just discolored plating?

i swear the plating is different with the tin tho, at least the crystles are colored different in places, and i did see one plating website that mentioned using 2 different metals on the anodes at the same time to dual plate

sounds like im making bad toxic fumes again, so ill just take the tin back out

Lower voltages prevent the water from being electrolyzed.

what does that even mean?  whys it bad if it becomes electrolyzed?

from my little google search as far as i can tell electrolyzed water produces lye???? or bleach?

i guess that would make sense since it seems that it is desolving metals quicker and quicker

here's some photo's, kind of hard to see but the white shit on the tin rod, and then i wipe it off and its black, apparently it was desolving it as it is alot smaller when the black starts so it was indeed reacting and most likely plating.  Which makes sense since there are tin-zinc plating kits out there, somehow it can be done.

but it also mentioned it being salt water and there is no salt in the water unless there was salt in the vineagar so it shouldn't produce lye or bleach?

You said you have vinegar? That will react with the zinc and produce hydrogen. Elctrolyzing water produces hydrogen at one electrode and oxygen at the other. How would you get lye without any sodium?

but koods i thought u were my book

but i knew the hydrogen part, my point is i wasn't getting this foam before, but since i put the tin in, now i am.

I got bubbles before that went to the surface and dispeared right away, but now i have actual foam forming that first started on the tin Rod Anode, look at my first photo's, see?  no foam

but i took the anode out, took the cathode out, and since then, foam has been forming by itself.  it appears to be forming above the zinc plates that were submerged to feed the solution extra zinc

ok so i wanted to check to see if it was hydrogen so i scooped some foam up, took it to another room over a sink and tried to light it, and it wouldn't light, it melted and turned brown/black.....wtf i expected it to either catch fire or pop the bubbles....not to melt.......

my first thought was maybe it started to dissolve the plastic container so i transfered it to a glass jar, which is gunna suck for plating but oh well.  i had a bar i was using and i was plating 4 things at the same time, with a jar im prolly gunna have to plate one thing at a time.

so yah i think the 12v, all the zinc i dissolved, creating so much hydrogen and oxygen just made an environment that dissolves stuff quickly and it started to dissolve the plastic container which created foam bubbles that don't pop because they are plastic bubbles.  which plastic should catch fire but i only held the flame to it long enough to see it turn brown/black....still i guess it should have caught fire pretty easy....but it was also wet so maybe thats why....i dunno so confusing
