Alcoholism
    #21845852 - 06/23/15 12:35 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

I got sent home today for the 2nd time because I wreaked of booze. My boss shook my hand and I was like fuck does that mean I have to go home. Ya dude I'm sorry. I don't drink before nor during work. Plus I had to wait 2 hours for the bus to run back through as I work 20 miles out of where I live.

Ran into my good friend I generally stand next to him. He drinks at work all fucking day and we all know it. What the fuck am I doing wrong? First of all your drinking steel reserves you gotta move to hard alcohol. I don't like hard alcohol atleast this way i'm never really drunk but ya know. Smoke a cigarette. Take a drink. Hard alcohol I drink like that and I get twisted way too fast.

He basically said you have to learn to control it. I'm an alcoholic too i'm going to a job interview right now. As he's letting me take a sip off his pint. Your making the wrong choices to get caught. But I know I can't trust myself with hard alcohol. I'll end up drinking it like beer and than i'm fucked up.

But my boss knows I work hard. So I know my job isn't in jeopardy. But I literally yelled fuck in front of him. Hopefully I can get home soon. Wash my clothes as I know I did spill beer on my clothing last night. But he won't fire me I make too much money for the company.

The hire ups were in the building. So I see where he's coming from. But fuck man I've been up since 430 am. Tired. Actually I was in a great mood today. Bummer. I was gonna bust out 7 boxes of 30 lbs today. I was killing it even clocked in 45 minutes early. Bummer.

I'm a crab shaker. I really enjoy my job.

Plus I forgot to brush my teeth fuck man 430 am is really early to wake up especially when your an insomniac. I maybe get 5 hours of sleep if i'm lucky. Usually around 2-3.

Nah I don't shower at all. On weekends I do but not before work. I just come out of there reaking like crab.

Cut back on the drink8ng, drugs are fun until they start effecting you negatively...you got sent home, you probably won't be paid for that.

You might think you won't get fired for it, especially if you're making them money, but as an employer myself, I can say they'll only put up with it for so long. You can't make them money if you're being sent home. And your boss might not care, but his bosses might, and it only takes one person to spread shit around.

Alcoholics usually don't drink less when they keep drinking, your problem will most likely get worse, and then it'll draw attention.

I thought you were trying to taper off and eventually quit.

Is that still a viable option for you, or are you set on keepin on drinking?

Who the fuck cares if you drank the night before and smelled of booze in the morning?  If that was the case 10% of the workforce would be sent home every morning.

I don't think there's anything wrong with drinking the night before working.

As long as you can get your shit straight by morning and not come in smelling like alcohol.

Fuck man I dunno. I just don't. I've tapered down so many times to the point I'm shaking laying in bed wishing I were dead. Then after the purge as I call it when you just curl into bed and sweat while sleeping. I dream a lot during it some of the best dreams i've ever had. But keep the sweat going. The purge.

I'm so bored and tired with life. I crave interaction with other people. I crave a lot of things drinkings something I do as I left my home 2 years ago. I'm 2 years clean of heroin but on the other hand I became an alcoholic. I just don't know. I've tried over and over when I get real shaky. But I dunno I always just figure oh well I'm good again and then restart the process.

I shower the morning after drinking, and change into new clothes. Ull never get away with it even if you think u smell ok the alcohol is evaporating off ur skin and into ur stank garments, and everyone can smell that shit twice as well as ur hung over ass.

Just make it a point to shower before work if ure drinking like that. Have ur clean clothes easy to go. It will show respect to ur boss that u are listening to his requests, he sounds pretty cool so it's nice to show a little respect in return

Go to a meeting dude.  If you have a desire to quit you could at least have a healthier place to unload than a bar.  I think just admitting to yourself that your problem is bigger than you can handle seems to be the hardest part about being an alcoholic for me personally.  Granted I've never gotten the shakes, I've never been sent home from a job, and I for the most part held my shit together and never got into a tussle with tolerance.  None of that changes the fact that I have next to NO self control once I started drinking.  Furthermore I fucking love the taste of a nice Gin highball, and there's probably not a day that wanders by that it doesn't cross my minds eye.  At the same time I know the repercussions of such an act now and I'm too old to keep making the same mistakes over and over.

Usually I'd agree with you on that, but if you smell like booze, especially if you work in something like a restaurant, you can be a potential risk.

If you even slightly have alcohol in your system and end up hurting a customer or another emplyee, they can turn around and sue the company for a number of things.

The company is liable for their employees, if he is drunk/potentially drunk and stinks like booze, he's a liability and they have eve ry right to tell him to leave or fire him.

Otherwise it's none of their business what he does in his spare time, but if his spare time is somehow effecting the time they're paying him for, they should do something about it and should have the right to.

If he walks by a table with kids and wreaks like booze, parents probably won't be to happy. There's just so many reasons how it effects his workplace too. Especially if you're representing their company.

that's the whole thing I'm stone cold sober. I don't drink at work or before. I would never do that the company pays my rent and is letting me live a better life from what I had. Not very hard to walk a quarter mile to buy a beer. I think i'll take home boys advice. Just drink hard alcohol I guess.

How the hell does your boss know you're a drinker if you don't drink before or during work?

Are your shirts so damm dirty that they smell like booze 24/7? It's called Tide and Bounce.

Brush your teeth too. It also helps.

I've been drinking for years and nobody knows. I don't give out obvious clues to my drinking.

You might want to consider legal action against the company for unfair disciplinary actions, sending a sober person home on the basis that you are intoxicated is a very serious employer infraction.

I worked in restaurants for 8 years. You know how many of them are doing drugs just to get through a single day of dealing with assholes? All of us. Well maybe not all but i'd say 90%. Why I really like my job now I don't have to deal with anybody. I dunno how I even got caught up. I didn't brush my fucking teeth and made the mistake of talking to the manager. When normally all I say to them is my name and they throw me my paycheck on payday. That was my mistake.

@patlal I wear the same clothes every day. All of my clothes are in seattle. It's a long story for another time but I don't even have a quarter of the clothing I normally wear.

He can only claim he was sober, if his boss and even one other person says he wreaked...he has no ground to stand on, especially since it takes less then 24 hours for alcohol to metabolize and he can't prove it now, even if they did, he said he's an alcoholic so it would come up positive.

He doesnt seem to be ashamed to be an alcoholic so I doubt it's a secret either. You're right that he should, but his employers wouldn't be at fault if they canned him for it and could easily get away with it. Just offering my 2 cents though OP...if your bosses are cool with it and you're not drunk at work then go nuts, but I'd still recommend cutting back.

I second this.

I don't agree with AA or NA on much at all. The only part I really agree with is that there is major therapeutic value in sharing with people who have similar problems.

I was drinking at least twenty beers a night or about 1/2-2/3rds of a handle if it was hard booze. I drank perpetually: before work, during, after, wake up in the middle of the night. All the fucking time. I dried out four a good four months and attended meetings just for something to do. I continued attending meetings for a good three months after that while drinking on occasion and moderately in only appropriate social setting.

The HARDEST part was changing my habits so that not all of my activities revolved around getting fucked up. Yes, meeting kinda suck and the disease theory of addiction is tenuous at best, but they do give you something to do that is cathartic and is not continuing the routine of getting sloshed.

As long as you can get your shit straight by morning and not come in smelling like alcohol.

Chew gum or have a breath mint, as long as he's sober and can do the job he shouldn't be discriminated against for drinking on his off hours.

This dude works with crabs, he should be able to smell like a unflushed toilet bowel at work.

You would fucking think so.

Nah I'll never go to a meeting. Ever. I don't need someone that learned addiction through a text book to tell me what I need to do. I've been managing it for a long time now. I'm 2 years clean of heroin. Never really even smoke pot any more kind of just grew out of it. I've tapered and cleaned up so many times and i'm only 24.

If you've never been curled into a ball wishing you were dead bleeding sweat I don't want to hear it.

I know exactly what your saying. I'll look into it. I dunno if I'll have time.

I find when I'm spending time with a pretty girl I don't drink at all. I drink because I've been lonely I left my home 2 years ago. But I'm doing pretty ok for myself now, I work full time, I got a room for rent, I feel really satisfied from where I came from. 2 years clean from heroin. Got some pretty girls i'm running through my place and a lot of friends. Well acquentiances but still. It's when I'm alone is when I just want to drink. It's complicated.

This girl the other day asked me why are you so shaky? I made some shit up but the real reason is I don't want to drink so much anymore but I'm withdrawing.

It's super sad at this is your outlook.  In fact the reason I go to AA meeting lies with the fact that every person there is an alcoholic.  It's not some sober asshat trying to explain to me how easy it is to get clean.  It's the guy who's lost his job, family, friends and ambitions telling me it's possible to stop if I need to that keeps me going.

Drinking hard liquor wont lessen the smell. It's not on you it's in you.I got called out at work plenty of times from coworkers and that was from the night before drinking hard liquor. Mints wont do shit because your lungs soak up the alcohol and you just smell like you've been gargling purell. The shakes and feeling like your going to die is the worst, and the only fix is a drink. I've been there before but my escape was detoxing in the hospital from a seizure. To do it alone while working is gonna take some planning out.

Yeah, dude, booze wd's suck. I came off combination of booze and massive amounts of benzo/thienos and it resulted in a fucking seizure.

The worst fucking part was the hallucinations. Just extreme paranoia and auditory hallucinations that, at the time, I thought were actual conversations going on about me berating me almost constantly in any rooms where there'd be a mixture of voices rising above each other. Absolutely horrid and terrifying.

In retrospect, all those awful thoughts were really me calling myself out.

There's no hiding it and you gotta start thinking of an end game. If you kicked heroin you have some experience, and plus you're still young and a seizure might be less likely from WDs.

There is no end game. Do you think I drink because I like it? Or do any drugs? No I grew up with some hard shit. Drugs are fun and all but there numbing. Which I know why 99% of the people do them here.

You don't have to do any stepwork if you don't want to...like someone else said, Just being around others that don't want to drink helps alot. First thing is...You gotta quit fighting...you done lost that fight dude...booze kicked your ass. It doesn't get any better...only worse. I disagree about a sudden and permanent line being crossed into a forever alcoholic state,
this article sums up a lot of the recent science on the subject and treatment in the US:

http://www.theatlantic.com/features/archive/2015/03/the-irrationality-of-alcoholics-anonymous/386255/

I do believe that some folks will never be able to drink socially again, however I don't believe this tenent applies to everyone who could benefit from group discussion.

Is that still a viable option for you, or are you set on keepin on drinking?

I completely understand man. You know I've been there with my oxy and dope addiction I had several years ago.
I was a unfulfilled with life as well after getting clean for a long time. Eventually I got better by diet, exercise, etc but that didn't last long.

I started drinking heavily like you about 3 years ago and in January of this year I finally found a way to stop. I ordered 1kg of Kratom and that made it so much easier to deal with the alcohol w/d's. It's the only thing that worked for me so if you're interested in trying that route, let me know as I have quite a bit of Kratom I can send you for free to help out.

Just let me know. :peace:

I've seen so many ex heroin addicts jump to drinking after quitting because it seems like the only thing that they can get by with. Then it gets to the point where it's not acceptable because you are losing control.

I can assure you that switching to hard alcohol would absolutely ruin your life. It would not stink less and that isn't the issue. The issue is you are addicted to alcohol. Plain and simple. If I was you I'd seriously order some gabapentin online. That is really the only thing I've seen alcoholics use without going into benzo blackouts. Get rid of the alcohol man. It's such a shitty way to go out. Once you get to the point of having physical w/d you really need to think of medications to substitute and taper.

Yes I know this my friend. I read that there's a lot of ex heroin addicts that move to alcohol. It's a depressant. Same shit but not as strong. They got some gabapentin in the fridge but i'd never steal from my renters. I'm quiet and clean. But I've never stolen. Never have never will. I know I am you really don't have to tell me that. I never was before but it's a depressant and it numbs me.

What my homie I randomly ran into told me was. Dude if your going to do this you have to learn to play the game. I'm heading for a job interview (as he lets me have a sip off his bottle) Your drinking the wrong shit of course you smell. Carries an almost gone tooth paste bottle in his bag. I don't want to go to hard alcohol I will drink it like beer I've already tried and be twisted by noon.

Yo, Enjoywho, we're you intoxicated at work or just smelling of booze?

If you we're legit not intoxicated, get a fucking breath-o-meter thing.

Prove them they are fucking wrong.

NOW, if you WERE drunk, learn to fly below the radar homie.

Only reason I don't drink before work is I 99% of the time, drink all my booze the night before

Just smelling I guess? I was completely sober clocked in 45 minutes early. I dunno who the fuck I said something too I just start working. I forgot to brush my teeth fuck I wake up at 430 am. Fuck man and I made myself a lunch that is far above on my priority list. I really don't worry about it.

I didn't show up for work yesterday and I told him. I missed the bus by 5 minutes and it's the only one that runs from Hoquiam. Plus I had a pretty girl sleeping in my bed. Just laughed and said yes I understand.

In the 4 months i've been there I make them so much fucking money. I take pride in anything I do and work hard. You can shake 2 boxes but why? I do 7-8. I take pride in what I do. He knows that that's why he didn't up and fire me. Shit I could quit tomorrow and he'd immediately hire me on the next day.

Yeah but that doesn't mean you should take advantage of the situation to fill your desires only to short out the company, at least of which cares somewhat about you. Stick to your guns and enjoy the adequate "you're needed" feel from your job. Be more discreet and cautious about your ways, it's so easy to be unsuspicious on alcohol, get your shit done, and stay true to yourself.

I would get a breath'alizer, if it was a continues problem, blow a 0.00 and show them you are sober.
Regardless if you smell like booze or not.

I always have a set pair of work clothes to make sure I don't spill drinks on them, because, like last night for example I probably spilt a beer or two on myself over the course of the night, and would have wreaked if It was my work uniform.

Just keep in mind, there is a limit to how much they can let fly, after a certain point they have to follow protocol before they are risking their own lifelyhood, you know?

After a certain point they have to send you home, regardless of the personal relationship.

I understand this. I made the mistake of saying something. Half the people never even show up. I'm the one helping people so we can leave. They literally don't care just show up and work. I've never seen anything like it. But I'm not going to leave people hanging especially new people. It's how I learned. A hot ass mexican lady. Look. Mira. I don't speak a lot of english.

I don't leave anyone hanging i'm one of the last to clock out. Once we get to getting off time I just take a bucket around load it up and bust that shit out quickly. They should be paying me more as i'm apparently one of the trainers now.

I stop them and shake my head. No watch me I will teach you but you have to watch me.

Stop. I'm trying to show you. Stop just watch me. That's what i did. Nobody trained me. I just started working. I figured it out. And I talked to the people that have been doing it 20+ years. How are you so fucking fast? Well after a while you just kind of get it. Any place you can save a second. We used to make a lot more.

I'm typing on my laptop. Don't really care what you think of my spelling. And I don't drink at work. I respect my employer he pays my rent. That's why he shook my hand but the higher ups were there. He couldn't take the chance and it was accidental that I did. But that's why I still have a job. I work hard and i'm apparently one of the trainers there. As there always asking me can you train him or her? Sure I don't care.

It was funny this older guy we've became good friends. I like him he's cool. If you don't know how to play the game don't play it. As he's got a pint in his bag and pulled out a tube of toothpaste and I just burst into laughter.

I know his ass is drinking at work everyone knows it but why am I getting caught up. I'm wishing I had a fucking drink. But he gave me some good advice.

It is what it is.
All I can tell you is that since I "quit" drinking, my life has improved dramatically.

It's just shitty that I know I can't be responsible about it. If I buy alcohol, I won't stop drinking till I'm falling over and about to black out.

I'll still have a beer with dinner if I'm out with friends, but I just can't keep alcohol at my house.

I knew an alcoholic when I still lived at the Y and he would just drink and eat a bunch of tuna and leave open containers of tuna in his room and I went in one time and his breath smelled like rotten fish and liquor and I wanted to barf so bad.

OP try kratom maybe.

I've already suggested kratom, and sending him a bunch for free. I don't think he's interested..

Kratom is the main thing that got me to quit drinking. I know for a fact that it if it wasn't for that I would of still been an alcoholic.

Kratom has helped me stay clean from meth.

I as an addict like the process of taking a drug to either feel normal or slightly better then normal if that makes sense. Feeling the same all the time sucks. I just crave the process of even going into slight withdrawal to feeling sober to feeling high and kratom fills that void for me. When I used to smoke it filled that void also because you go into slight withdrawal and feel shitty without the smoke but when you take that drag you feel immense relief.

But ya, something about that process is something I need and if you are sort of like that too just switch the alcohol for a new addiction which is the kratom and you will be all good and productive at work.

Yea, that's true to an extent for me.

When I got glean from opiates a long time ago, diet, exercise and weed filled that void.

When I got clean from alcohol recently, kratom was something that helped me get through w/d's but it was going back to proper diet, exercise and bud that filled the void once again.

Since then kratom has just become something recreational for me and to be honest, I'm a lot more productive when I don't take any. That's where we differ.

Kratom might help a few people with alcoholism, but personally, its almost impossible to consume an active ammount without vomiting. i did use it here and there for kicks, but once i started drinking and using hard drugs regularly, it became completely intolerable

i cant even use kratom when i'm not w/ding. i'll puke it back up. if i tried to use kratom while i was withdrawling? forget about it. its a fools errand

not trying to discourage you OP... but i'd say you probably be better off with somethig like Etizolam. it doesnt cause nausea, you dont need to eat a dozen grams of it to feel something, you pretty much always know what your getting if you order etilaam/etizest brand, and its easy to taper with

i always feel better about my drinking habit after reading some of these...

i shouldn't because most people that are heavy drinkers are in the same boat, just as op put it, better at the game.

I feel you I'm the same way.

Only because we live in modern times.
People use to go months without bathing.

We never were Neanderthals.  Maybe a little crossbreeding but not much.
