What's your biggest non-essential expenditure?
    #21845496 - 06/23/15 10:36 AM (8 years, 7 months ago)

As in, what do you spend your money on other than rent, food, car insurances etc.

I spend most of my disposable income on food.  Every month I go to this all you can eat Japanese restaurant.  Costs me about 12 to 13.  Then I go to Starbucks once in a while.  Other than these, I do not spend my money at all.

I have a friend, and she is an engineer.  She likes to go shopping for shoes and clothes.  Said that it gave her the motivation to want to work hard.

How does Shroomery spend its money?

Beside festivals and camping trips I would say my ratrod.  But my biggest non essential everyday expenditure is shooting pool.  Usually $10-$15 in quarters a night and $10-$20 in beer.  I really like pool though.

Larping, runs me about 100 bucks a month in event fee/extras/gas/food.
Then another 20-100 a month in costuming (depending on what I'm making at the time)

On a month-to-month basis, probably eating out.  I probably spend about $800/month eating out with the gf.

travel and electronics are up their, but they're irregular.  Maybe 10-15k/year on that?

With booze, a meal for two can easily pass $100, so that's dining out Friday and Saturday night .  Every now and then we'll throw in a breakfast and lunch too...  For non-dinner she pays every now and then.  Oh, the house is cleaned twice a month for $340 too.

Mixed drinks with food isn't too bad if they're made right...never understood how people drink beer with food though, makes it sooo much worse, the beer and the food.

Cigs, drugs, and outdoor shit is mainly what I spend money on as of late.

Have you tried switching over to seltzer water?  It can give you the bubbly feeling of soda but none of the negatives, also they make some great naturally flavored waters

Yeah, most of the time if I try and drink a beer with food, it makes the food taste shittier, and the beer itself taste real bad while I'm eating. They make each other taste different to me, usually worse.

I went to Chicago a few years ago for a work thing and stopped at Morton's steak house, had a beer with their rib eye, and that was incredible, but apart from steak so far, I have to switch to soda or water at least while I'm eating and go back to drinking after.

nah idk if ive ever drank seltzer tbh

i just like soda cuz it tastes good lol. its liquid candy

ive just been tryin to drink more water cuz its better for you. its easier in the summer for me to drink water cuz its hot out and youre actually thirsty. in the winter its cold out and like i just need more flavor than water. been doing this yearly process for a couple years now

i cant drink water when im blazing either. need juice or something. water just sucks when all the other flavor is like weed smoke. ugh its kinda gross imo

I don't really drink soda unless its with liquor. And since I don't drunkdrink liquor anymore I don't really drink soda either.

Water and juice is the way to go. And beer of course

I probably drink 125-200 oz of water a day. i can chug a 2 liter of water no problem if my stomach is empty.

I live in a hot, dry desert climate though. Just standing outside sucks the moisture out of you.

Back to the question though, Other than the essentials i don't buy much. I like to just save, for when i need stuff when shit breaks. (like my car, computer or anything else around the house) Most of the extra money that i spend goes to drugs and alcohol.

I usually only buy new stuff when the old breaks/wears out.

I hate how we live in a throw-away society where you just buy a replacement when shit breaks

I like to go to fancy restaurants sometimes, like hundred-dollar steaks fancy. Okay, I just went to one once. It was such a gaping expenditure that IMO it still counts for this thread, about three months later. Point is, it was awesome and I think I'll do it again sometime. There were twenty-one different kinds of salt for chrissake.

yeah thats what everyones always told me, to drink like a more legit beer

but idk im over it, in general im really not a fan of alcohol anyways

for the rest of my life ill probly drink less than one beer

with beer everyones like "oh its an acquired taste". an acquired taste is bullshit and a lie. acquired taste really means "it tastes like shit, you just got used to it"

the last time i even took a sip was like prob 3-4 years ago. i was at a bar and reallly drunk and having a horrible night. bar was about to close and i saw a bunch of drinks people just left there cuz they had already left so i started drinking any drink that was there. then i realized i drank beer and spit it out on the floor lol

So, we see that many people waste money on crap either they don't need or can get much cheaper if they use a tiny bit of sense and will power.

$800 a month to eat out and 340 to have the house cleaned twice??? That is bat shit nuts. Even if you make $100,000 a year its not a good idea and many in this thread make a whole lot less. This is why so many people never get out of poverty, never really get into the middle class or never move up, period.

A great ship can sink from many small leaks. What happens when the good times are over and hard times come? Where is the money you could have put aside or invested in something that would improve your life or make more money for you? It was all thrown out the window and the opportunity was lost. Good times never last forever, if you are just barely treading water now, it could be very bad later.

Wise up now, eat at home, brown bag it at work, do it yourself or shop around. You can save many times 50% of the cost of an item by shopping around and with google you have no excuse not to. When you have money left, do not think what you will run out and spend it on. Put it in the bank instead. Buy a home instead of renting. 30 years of paying rent brings you nothing but a higher rent bill to pay today. Paying a mortgage for 20 or 30 years means you own it and no more rent to pay.

I make much more per hour than my cleaners.  The time that I would have spent cleaning the house is spent working (at a higher income rate).  The result is a net monetary gain.  I'm curious how that is bat shit nuts?

Yeah, people don't realize it but it costs you a fortune over a long period. The same ones who are doing this will be broke later down the road. Then they will tell everyone it was bad luck. People with huge incomes manage to squander every dime and live paycheck to paycheck. Millionaires become destitute the same way. Take mikey Jackson for example. He made up to $100m per year but died broke and in debt.

Its not JUST that though. sure EVERYONE eats out. But there are the people that dont realise how much they actually spend on shit like that. Doesnt matter how much money some people have, they are just terrible with it and spend up to the utmost limit.

Very sobering words, Stone.  I must say that you are a man wise beyond your age (I am assuming that you are young).  Indeed.  800 dollars a month for eating out?  Some people can actually almost live on that amount a month.

I know that if I had some extra 800 dollars lying around, I would put it down towards my "condo-buying" fund.

Stone how much do you spend on non-essential stuff in a month?

>Stone how much do you spend on non-essential stuff in a month?

I get 2 newspapers, I suppose one would do but I don't watch tv so its a cheap luxury. Plus I get dollars off coupons which more than pay for the extra subscription in a year.

I smoke a lot of pot, I need it for medicinal reasons more than kicks. I get it really cheap. I eat dark chocolate which costs a whopping $5 at trader joes for 1/2 kilo. Its good for health too but there may be cheaper ways to get the cocoa. Sometimes I buy junk I don't really need but I've cut back on that. I was paying money for language practice to maintain fluency. Is that a non essential or a good investment?

I'm thinking hard trying to come up with more. The thing is, if I identity something non essential that I don't actually crave then I usually eliminate it eventually. If I do crave something then I try to kick the addiction. I was hooked on pastries, and sweets but kicked it and lost a lot of weight years ago. If anything I should spend more, I deny myself too much. But if I need money for something its never a problem. An interesting coincidence, don't you think?

If you don't do MDMA/extacy it's about 80-120 bucks a gram, one of the most expensive drugs their is if not the most expensive

I've seen DMT go for upward of $200 a gram, which is ludicrously overpriced, but that drug is hyped to high heaven. It's a good drug and it deserves the hype but no way is one gram worth $200 or more.

Stone watches his finance closely.  This is a very positive trait, if most of the poorer Americans would imitate him, they would lift themselves out of poverty for sure.

I think the two of us are quite similar.  I too, hold onto my wallet with both fists.  I very very very rarely spend money, and when I do it's almost on food, which generally doesn't cost very much.  I don't have a cell phone and no car either.  So right there I save on car insurance and the monthly plan fee.  I don't follow fashion as to buy the latest fashion that just came out.  Nowadays almost all of the money I make, I put it towards my condo-buying fund.

p.s.  What language are you trying to learn, can you tell me?  Also, I like dark chocolate too but I can't eat too much of it, trying to lose weight, lol

p.s.s.  I think it's awesome that you don't watch TV.  I don't either.  TV rots and corrupts people's minds, yo

It's funny because DMT only gets you high for like a half hour, and the standard "strong dose" is 50mg, so at $200 for a gram that's about $10 for a strong trip. I guess that's not so bad if you know how to use it, especially considering how intense the trip is, but newbies typically waste a few doses figuring out how to smoke it right. I just feel sorry for somebody who ends up spending $40 on a half hour trip.

That involves more math than I care to do tonight.

DMT, MDMA and LSD in no particular order for sure. Even pills get way overpriced for their ready-availability.

All the shitty drugs (heroin, crack, meth) you can dose pretty cheap. Gotta try to keep the fix under budget!

Yea math is something I can not do right now lol alcohol as I mentioned earlier is the second most expensive drug I use but it's hard to say what a dose is. Shit MDMA is up there tho for sure.

That is some serious coin. It's been awhile since I went to a festival (probably 3 or 4 years now.)

I'm too much of a old Jew to wanna throw that kinda money around for festivities. That's allowance for 3.5 months of drinking!

Electric forest is by far the best festive ice been too, but yea the price is getting to be a bit much. Then about another 50 or 60 for gas and stopping for food. And then 200 for my drugs lol fuck it it's close and fun, this will be my last year tho

My new addiction having quit cigarettes for almost 7 months now, is COFFEE.  I quit that too for a long time, but then a roommate got a pot, and I was instantly fucked.  It's turned into me getting coffee every time I'm out about town.  Sometimes I just get drip coffee 12oz, few bucks.  Sometimes something fancier, 3-4 bucks.  Adds up fast.  It's so stupid, I'm trying to knock it off completely.

I guess that's it.  I don't eat out much, I can cook better than most of the places I would go to.  Weed is free, mushrooms are free, beer low fills are free.  I have large expenses in my life, but they all end up paying back what I spent plus much more.  I choose to DIY pretty much everything in my life, even though for most of it, I don't need to.  I can't stand giving money to someone knowing that I can do it myself for 25% of the price.  Except coffee hahahaha!

We all have our stupid things we do.

I've only ever been given molly so I can't say.

Weed is about $2.00 a gram to grow +/- a few cents.  Uh, it costs about $10 to grow 4-5 oz of mushrooms, at your rate that's $1120-$1400.

The people I know, we know the actual value of things and that's what we expect for them, selling or buying.

The things you use all the time... You gotta do em yourself.  I can understand if you can't grow weed if you live in a apartment or something.. but shrooms is as covert as it gets.

Most people don't have the time or resources or space to do a project like that, which is why drugs that get manufactured locally still have a hefty mark-up most of the time.

Kakashi, I've heard people float prices of $500 a gram for DMT. I personally find that outrageous, but I'm not complaining, I don't buy DMT.

my biggest single expense is what we ihn holland call "vaste lasten" (standard costs) being gas, water, electricity, the essentials of keeping a house running.

I sure could use some extra money. but who knows?

Mixed drinks with food isn't too bad if they're made right...never understood how people drink beer with food though, makes it sooo much worse, the beer and the food.

Cigs, drugs, and outdoor shit is mainly what I spend money on as of late.

I think an IPA with my anything is fuckin awesome

Its good that not everyone is a spendthrift. But if everyone was frugal the economy might collapse, lol. So much is based on people buying stuff they don't need. But then less forests would be cut down and less pollution so it would be a good thing.

I speak a little of 4 languages; eng, span, fr, and ger. I keep my chocolate binging down and do not gain weight. I would watch tv occasionally if there were good programs on and it didn't cost so much. I can't see spending $40 a month on something I rarely use. Waste not want not.

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.” (attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville political philosopher Circa 1835)

Weed is about $2.00 a gram to grow +/- a few cents.  Uh, it costs about $10 to grow 4-5 oz of mushrooms, at your rate that's $1120-$1400.

Well if we are talking about growing your own stash that's a completely different animal, I'm talking street price mayne
