Mania after stopping weed and wanking?
    #21844764 - 06/23/15 05:17 AM (8 years, 7 months ago)

About 2 weeks ago I stopped smoking weed to study for exams and stopped wanking because I've been at uni studying all day and havn't had the spare time.

in the first couple of days I felt really anxious and stuck in my head, and would go to bed at night with a feeling of dread flaring up in the pit of my stomach sporadically (possibly due to worrying about being behind with study and not due to any physical changes). I'm pretty nervous by nature, but usually I don't actually feel any bodily feels like that. In the last couple of days though I've felt unbelievably good, extremely energetic, sharp and on the ball. I've been striking up conversations with strangers and calling friends and family whenever I'm bored and being more outgoing in general. My thought processes even feel more mature and stoic (I'm 22).

I'm wondering if anyone knows this feel or can explain it? Intuitively it seems to me that weed and wanking put you in a relaxed, un-energetic state and this is my body rebounding from stopping (I smoked weed every day for over 2 months before I stopped and have masturbated 1-3 times a day whenever I get time at home alone for years). This also happened to me last year when I read about 'no-fap' and didn't smoke or wank for about a month but I fell back into ingrained habits lol.

I don't know if the anti-wanking stance has any bearing on your current feels, but anytime I take a break from da schmoke, about the first week I feel a "natural high".  I feel very focused and energetic, assertive, and go out of my way to approach people more than I normally do.

I have experienced similar things to what you described. I actually just started a similar thread not 2 minutes ago. BTW, usually when I quit smoking, my sex drive is just gone. That might be the case for you.

On to your question/topic:
All I can say is that MJ binds to cannabanoid receptors in your brain and though not much is known about them, there are studies that show that they are related to appetite, sleep, and emotional regulation. Marijuana is shown to exacerbate emotional states (or regulate them for some), decrease sex drive (or raise it for many), increase fatigue and desire for sleep, and increase appetite. Withdrawals are usually like an echo of the effects of intake (BA in psych, researched a lot of drugs, but a conjecture none the less).

More importantly, marijuana stimulates a heavy dopaminergic release (this is why it is habit forming and feels good/is behaviorally reinforced). Now here is where I leave science for conjecture:
When you keep smoking the value of other things become diminished (their dopaminergic response cannot rival pot's). So you won't feel as rewarded for your actions and slowly decrease in activity while you smoke. Then after you quit, for a few days until you normalize. That normalization process is messy and leaves you seeking reward endlessly for a release that isn't there. For me, it's like I just keep going and going with no end. On to the next activity, on to the next activity... The typical release to let you know you've done good and can relax is not significant enough and thus, your typical conditions for relaxing are not present. When I was smoking, I'd just take a hit when I wanted to relax. Now I have to learn how to produce part of that high on my own again.

I'd say that when you smoke and jack off everyday your forming habits where you need to be cut off socially, finding small ways to prepare mentally throughout the day to be alone. Your more stuck in your head

When you stop that you become very present again. you give and receive facial and body cues that are more relaxed and open.

Smoking weed lowers your testosterone and wanking it certainly does, the more testosterone flowing through you have the easier it is to be a sociable guy.

Also I just believe there are times you find are easier to want to be social. And times where the juice isn't worth the squeeze and being alone is better. If that's the kind of person you are.

Marcus arilius said something like if you think of the whole of the human body and spirit  you can lose a limb and never get it back, but God has given you the power to never lose you social limb and if you do you can always get it back. (That's a very butchered quote btw)

Edit: and I completely agree with deprevation too. There's a gratification element of chemicals  at play

Thanks, toast. I like that I got into the gnitty gritty of scientific explanation and you hit 'em with the broader and more spiritual perspective.

Great point, too! Beyond the chemical, behavior should really be examined. You just made me realize that all my energy is turning to an unproductive mania because I haven't REALLY set a goal in over a year. Even now, I still combat such realizations with, meh, fuck it, I'm no EMT or world changing inventor/philosopher does it really matter? OP when I was in college, I didn't really have that problem, plus I was full of ideals of how far I'd make it after graduation, so I was more positive and productive when I quit like you.

Of course, being a materialist, I really liked that testosterone point as well. I'll need to do some research on its effects to see how it could be affecting me (and other smokers in remission)! Off the top of my head though, it increases sex drive and I really have none after I quit, so it might not be relevant to me.

I couldnt of said it any better than LackToast. In my opinion it sounds more like a mental thing, your mind stuggling to adapt to a different life style. Your whole reward system has changed. I would check out the subreddit on reddit called nofap. Very interesting stuff and its amazing what masturbation and porn can do to you.

I highly reccomend checking out nofap. There have been studies and your testosterone increases 10 fold at the 7 day mark after no sex or masturbating, if anything masturbating on the reg is causing low testosterone. Theres a ton of interesting information on nofap about quitting and what happens to your mind and body in the process.
