Scooter/Moped

So, I've recently moved to an area where I'll likely need to own a motorized vehicle to get to and from work. The bus doesn't accomodate my late schedule, and it's just too far for me to comfortable bike back and forth.
However myself and a another fellow that live with me are considering getting a pair of scooters to make the commute gas efficient and also just for shits and giggles.
Anyone have any input or personal experiences?

You can fit up to 4 people on a moped, I know from personal experience.

I'm in a city that isn't very bike/scooter friendly. I was hesitant to get one; but I'm really glad to have it now. Main downside is you can't ride in storms; which we've had a lot of since I purchased one. Great money saver though. Super easy to work on if you get a two-stroke.
Here's mine:

Also, if you can't get pussy because of your ride then your game is pretty weak.

Yeah, I was looking at installing a two stroke engine on a bike, but two of my mechanic friends strongly advised me against it and told me if I was going to do something like that, I should just get a scooter.
Their reasoning basically boiled down to, "bicycles aren't designed to have motors".
I know that's not very explicit, but they work with motors for a living, so I'm guessing they probably know what they're talking about.

I agree with them. Some bikes aren't too bad because of the frame design, but most suck. I'd be worried about burning my legs on the hot engine block.
Just a heads up for the future snobs you'll encounter in the community; Scooters are usually in the classic vespa style, but more importantly have no pedals. Moped has pedals and typically look more like a bike.
I don't correct people on it, because I still know what they're talking about; but a lot of people out there will.

Why a scooter?
If it were me, I'd get a dual purpose bike before a scooter. I could understand not wanting a "real" motorcycle.

By dual purpose do you mean like a gas assisted bicycle, or like a dualsport street/offroad bike?

On/off road street legal dirt bike. With tires for on road use since that's what you'd be using it for anyways. Gas cost won't really be that much different, suspension is better for a more comfortable ride (since they are designed for off road use) they don't have insane amounts of power or weight (why I could understand not wanting a full fledged motorcycle) and as an added bonus you always have the choice to go do a bit of off road site seeing if you feel like it.

How much kilometers do you need to do daily?
My hippy self would say grab an old running vespa and ride it till you die, they're very long lasting when properly serviced. Plus, they're available in 125, 150 and even 200cc engines, and they have gears.

Shroomslip, the main reasoning for the scooter over a dual purpose is basically cost and availability. I see lots of cheap scooters for sale, but rarely see a good used bike for sale in my price range.
BrownBuffalo, I'd be traveling at least 35 km a day on days that I have work, and occasionally a little bit more just for getting around the city.
