I hit a deer earlier tonight

On the highway. It was just about near the white line of a 2 lane highway, and so I didn't hit it dead on. Only with the right side of my car. I'm sure it still died though. I felt fucking awful. I should have swerved. I saw it, was like "wtf!?" then looked in my mirror real quick to see if I had room, but then as I looked back to the road it was too late. I just heard BOOM, then saw it's body just fly to the right side of the road.
I stopped a few exits down to inspect my car. I thought my light would be broken, but it doesn't seem so. I have some scratches on the paint and a few cracks in some plastic covering thing in the front. I need to take it to see if there's any damage on the inside, but it seemed ok.
I wasn't sure what to do. I didn't call the police because well...I've read too many horror stories with police. But I wanted some proof incase I needed it for insurance reasons.
I had my bro just to look up a number for animal control or something, but we didn't find one. So now, it's probably just lying on the side of the highway
I don't think I'll forget that BOOM noise and the way it flung in the air, for a long time.
I feel bad now, but when it first happened, I felt terrible.

You did the best you could, mate. Don't go out of your way, the deer sure didn't (not trying to make a funny). I mean that it was probably scared, you were too. It's done.
I'm glad you're okay! I was afraid to open this post I've heard horror stories of people dying from such incidents. It's okay to feel bad, just don't beat yourself up.
Glad you're okay

I drive sometimes just for fun at night, and Ive hit a cat =[, 2 raccoons, and I think 2 squirrels if it makes you feel any better. None of those situations were avoidable for me. And I have run over a ground hog on a atv but they are tough creatures so I think it was probably alright.

^Your venison joke is ok. My bro said the same thing after he asked if I was alright and whatnot.
And no lol, that doesn't make me feel better. I know it was by acciden though. Most drivers probably will kill some animal throughout their driving. It just sucks is all.

Yeah, thanks.
When i called my brother like 10 minutes after it happened he was saying the same thing. I always knew people hit deers and animals a lot, but idk I just never realized how serious it can be. I was googling it later and saw that a lot of people do die from it. Either cus the swerve or because the deer is big and goes through their windshield or something.
The more I think about it though, the more I'm scared it didn't actually die. I mean it went flying and first guess is its dead. But idk, i didn't hit it dead on. Sucks it could be suffering.
I eat meat all the time, but man I could never work at a slaughterhouse. Not that I blame them, I need them for my food, I just couldn't do it.

Damn. I might even feel worse if I had hit a cat tbh. I have a cat as a pet, and I love cats. I don't have deer as pets, you know?

I couldn't avoid hitting a raccoon family once. It IS a shitty feeling, so I know where you're coming from.
If they can't get out of the way and you can't avoid it to the best of your ability, just try to be okay about it is all.
Much love dude.

I was with a pretty cool intoxicated country dude with my fam, his fam once and he ran over a porcupine on purpose out in the sticks, he did so cause they fuckup dogs and are no good. I agree with him killing it.I also saw a turtle limping on the side of the road one time with its organs hanging out, I felt so bad I called animal patrol and left it in shade in my yard. I knew it was prob gunna die but I wanted to have some hope in saving it, I was young. I have way to many stories about things dying it sucks.

Meh, I've eaten roadkill.
One hunting season my Grandpa hit a deer driving back from the hardware store after dusk.
He popped into the cabin and was like, "Hey, DrMambo, I hit a deer. Grab a tarp and a flashlight"
Cut the gravel out, and it's a-ok.

If there wasn't much damage to your car, the deer is probably (mostly) okay. A full on collision with one can total a car. It might not of even went flying. They can jump pretty high and I'm sure one getting hit by a car would startle it enough to coax a good jump out of it.
I've so far only hit one animal and it was actually just the other day. Some bird flew into my windshield while I was doing like 40.. There was a very loud thump and a lot of feathers. Was in the car when my wife has also full on ran over a possum. It for sure died. Both happened within a block of each other. Apparently the animals in our neighborhood don't know how to stay out the way of cars. I constantly have to slam on the breaks to keep from hitting a squirrel, cat or dog.

^Animals, man. Why can't they just look both ways?
Maybe it was just a baby and that's why there wasn't that much damage? Idk, I didn't get a good look. I was going like 65-70. I feel like that would take out its hindlegs for good. But maybe it is ok. Idk. I hope so. Or I hope it's dead. Just not lying there waiting to die.
And Sheekle I never knew haynes founded that. That's awesome. ....at least they didn't give you a ticket or anything like that. Still blows though.

It probably doesn't feel too good, but I'm reluctant to say it would have definitely suffered severe injuries. Equal and opposite reaction and all.. If you hit with enough force to severely maim something, you'd expect your car to show the same in damage.

Case in point.
I was walking out the front door of an apartment complex one night last week, and as the door shuts I hear pained squeaking. I look behind me on the ground, and there's a mouse crushed halfway through the door on the hinge side. I opened the door and it was able to drag itself forward a little bit, but it was really mangled.
I stomped it. Didn't really know what else to do. Thing was all fucked up.
Fucking horrible timing, though. It was like some villain in an action movie who needed to tried to be greedy and run back to get the last bit of loot before a security door shut or something.

In this state road killed animals are legal.
There was a bear hit on the interstate not too long ago. The paper said "bear hit by truck going 60 miles per hour"..I was like man, that bear was hauling ass!
Shit happens man, just dont hit a tree or an on coming car. It is what it is.

I was driving to my friends house a couple weeks ago and the car in front of me hit a deer. The deer must have ramped up/been deflected by the hood and windshield, we were going maybe 65-70mph. I've never seen anything like it. The thing flew up at least 15 feet in the air. Like I was maybe 3-4s behind the driver that hit it and the deer landed on the side of the road right as I drove by.
I think this guy handled it like a boss. He didn't try to swerve or slam on the brakes in traffic he just plowed through (then pulled over). I slowed down and gave him a wave to make sure he was ok and he looked fine so I decided it was better not to cause more of an obstacle and keep moving. After the shock abated I was like 'I wish I had got that on video'
It's kinda tragic that animals have to suffer like that just so people can get to the store or movies or job. I know they're just animals, but it is a good reason not to drive like a complete jackass, even when you think it's ok 'cause there's no other cars around.

Yeah I've been watching auto accident videos. It's crazy how they'll just be zipping along, then in under a second something blocks the way, they maybe scream for an instant, and that's it. Even driving cars, things like that shouldn't be too far from your mind when operating a vehicle. You can be the most talented rider in the world, but if you make poor decisions you will die all the same.

Yeah man, don't be so hard on yourself, you did not mean to, to bad you can't stand slaughtering up animals thought, in the sense to make it usable meat.
I was in the car with my brother one time over 25 years ago, and this fucking beagle came out of nowhere and just ran into the car like it was committing suicide, got ran over by the backwheel. It was AWFUL man, the kids had just been let out of school and were all walking home, I am talking like elementary school kid age, and they saw it, the dog was yelping, and the kids were trying to help it, we saw that when we turned around and was going to stop, but just could'nt man. It was not his fault at all, and we all felt terrible

I used to work in middle of nowhere Wyoming and drove the roads there at like 4 AM (Wyoming has more wildlife than people), and I must've hit like literally dozens of rabbits. They would shoot across the road like bullets, right at the absolute last second in front of the vehicle. It was like they were committing suicide or some shit.
And they have wild horses in WY, and one morning I came around a curve (pretty fucking fast) and in the middle of the road there was a horse -- just standing there like a fucking statue. I swerved and must've missed it by literally a foot.
If I would've hit him square I'm pretty sure I would've been dead (along with him). People die all the time in Alaska (among other places) from hitting moose, and horse are in the same neighborhood as far as size goes.

Damn man, you are way lucky!
Not that a deer could not kill you by smashing into one, but FAR less likely then a horse or a moose, I saw a video were a car hit a cow, I don't remember how much damage it did to the car, but this fucking cow went flying straight over into another cars windshield like at least 15 feet away it seemed, it was pretty crazy

Yeah man it was scary as hell. I was pretty shook up for the rest of that drive.
Needless to say I learned to slow it down after that on the roads. That horse encounter was always in the back of my mind from that point forward.

Local weed man was driving down a back road in one of those mustang 5.0's.. hit a deer and had it ride up the hood and through the windshield. It kicked him all to pieces.

With my face against the floor I can’t see who knocked me out of the way. I don’t want to get back up but I have to so it might as well be today. Nothing appeals to me no one feels like me, I’m too busy being calm to disappear. I’m in no shape to be alone contrary to the shit that you might hear. You can't wake up, this is not a dream. You're part of a machine, you are not a human being With your face all made up, living on a screen. Low on self esteem, so you run on gasoline

Dude, I was riding in my buddies truck, it was like 2am and we saw a buck running down the side of the road, my homie slowed down and the damn thing charged the passenger door nailed it HARD then ran off.
Crazy deer had it out for us.
