Ok, so this comes from a good friend in North Ga, Atl area. I do not have the specimens in hand but they do.

Habitat:
North Ga. Mixed hardwoods. Mostly beech.

Gills:
Pores. Easily separable from pileus.

Stem:
Same color.

Cap:
Dry.

Spore print color:
unsure.

Bruising:
no bruising, just darkens a bit.

Other information:
Very meaty, slightly sweet taste. Not peppery or bitter at all. Smells good.

It does look like a colored fungal covering...

Or maybe this is Tylopilus balloui (?)

I find most bolete IDs challenging. Too vast for me...

Ahhhh....hate to say it but I believe we were mistaken.
B.auriflammeus has reticulation on the stipe.... this one is very smooth.
I have spoken with quite a few people, one of them is going to take a real look at them!!! But we have come up with a tentative ID of Boletus aurantiosplendens.... any opinions?

I thought it might just be weathered enough to wear off any reticulation, it looks pretty old

Boletes are kinda like ice hockey to me, I respect them and certainly have enjoyed them at certain times in the past, I just have very little interest on a day to day basis.
