:chief:CHIA TRIALS:chief:

Brought to you by THE TRIBE

1. Will Chia seed increase yield or is it a waste of time?

2.How do you properly prepare chia seed to get the best results?

3. Goal: Find an alternative substrate additive that will slow release nutrients through multiple flushes like spawnmate.

The Chia seed will be added to the bulk as follows:

1. Chia seed added to substrates dry then pasteurized
2. Chia seed sterilized to expand then pasteurized
3. Chia seed expanded with water then pasteurized

**All tests performed with working/ tested clone cultures.

PF AMAZON CHIA SEED TRIAL #1:
LAYER CASED SUBSTRATE

Substrate Ratio Per Tub:

1:1.6 Ratio Spawn:substrate
  • 6 Quarts of WBS spawn
  • 10 Quarts Volume: 1 Brick Coir/ 1 Quarts Verm/ 1 cups gypsum/ 4 cups strawnet/ 1/4 cup chia seed.
  • layered with 3 quarts mixed into sub, 3 quarts as a top layer. then a thin 1/4" casing placed on top. chia was added prior to pasteurization.
  • 3" Sub Depth

Control: 4 tub comparison. 2 tubs with chia(Tub 3 and 4) and 2 without(Tub 5 and 6). All 4 tubs are the same high yielding tested clone and the same substrate mix and volume. The non chia tubs have 6 quarts spawn each. The chia tubs have 6 quarts each.

Question: Will the higher protein content of chia help bulk up yield in multiple flushes with a side by side when compared to tubs without chia seed? The ultimate goal is to get consistent yield in multiple flushes. How do you access the nutrients using chia seed? What is the best method to figure this out?  Is it beneficial to add the chia in dry or should it be expanded with water first then added to the substrate and pasteurized? several different methods for adding chia seed to bulk substrate will be attempted. It has a very high concentration of protein and seems to be a viable additive to bulk substrates.

CHIA TUBS: Yield was lower in the 1st flush about 3oz dry per tub. But increased in the 2nd flush to 4oz dry. Third flush did absolutely nothing so the two tubs were chunked out and used for new substrates. Substrate as casing method seems to lower yield with the same spawn ratio cased at 100% used with this clone. Generally yield is 6-8z dry 1st flush on average.

Tub 3: Fruiting Day 1-9

2nd Flush:

Tub 4: Fruiting Day 1-9

2nd flush:

PF AMAZON TRIAL #2:
LAYER CASED SUBSTRATE

Substrate Ratio Per Tub:

1:1.4 Ratio Spawn:substrate
  • 7 Quarts of WBS spawn
  • 10 Quarts Volume: 1 Brick Coir/ 1 Quarts Verm/ 1 cups gypsum/ 4 cups strawnet/ 1/4 cup chia seed.
  • layered with 4 quarts mixed into sub, 3 quarts as a top layer. then a thin 1/4" casing placed on top.
  • 3" Sub Depth

NON CHIA TUBS: Yield was higher in 3 flushes without the chia seed on these runs. The substrates only produced 5oz dry on the 1st 4oz dry on 2nd flush. 2oz dry on the 3rd. The tubs were chunked after 3 flushes. The substrate as casing method here was used with 1/4" casings.  It seems the nutrients in the chia weren't utilized as wanted.

Tub 5: Fruiting Day 1-9

2nd Flush:

Tub 6: Fruiting Day 1-9

2nd Flush:

APE: CHIA SEED TRIAL #2:
REGULAR CASING APPLIED AT 100%

Substrate Ratio Per Tub:

1:1.3 Ratio Spawn:substrate per tub
  • 6 Quarts of WBS spawn
  • 8 Quarts Volume per tub: 2 Brick Coir/ 4 Quarts Verm/ 1/2 cups gypsum/ 1/2 cup chia seed. the chia was prepped as described below.

This recipe filled 3 tubs worth of substrate for 8 quarts volume of sub in 4 tubs.

Chia Seed was broken up prior to putting it in the substrate mix. 1/2 cup of chia seed was pressure cooked in a quart jar filled with water by no particular measured volume. The seed and jar were pressure cooked for 30 minutes at 15psi. It is hopeful that nutrients can be accessed earlier than the last trial.

This is the seed after pouring the water in

This is the seed after 5 minutes soaking in water. Notice the gelling effect of the chia. This happens after it has been in water for a few minutes.

This is the seed after 30 minutes pressure cooking at 15psi and then removed from the pressure cooker after it has cooled.

This is the chia poured into the tub full of substrate

Chia being mixed in

Substrate after it has been thoroughly mixed with gloves on. Light, fluffy and even.

Substrate was then oven pasteurized for 2.5 hours. and spawned normally.

Substrate Ratio Per Tub:

1:1.4 Ratio Spawn:substrate
  • 6 Quarts of WBS spawn
  • 8 Coir/Verm/ 1/4 cups gypsum/ 1/4 cup chia seed.
  • Grain was prepared by Slurried Spawn
  • 2.5" Sub Depth

TUB 1 FAILED

TUB 2 FAILED

TUB 3 FAILED
TUB 4 FAILED

All 4 of my tubs failed and contaminated with heavy trich and metabolites on or before the first flush. The one control tub without any chia seed fruited normally. So the spawn was not the issue. The control tub used the same recipe with the same batch of spawn but no chia in the substrate. The pre sterilization of the chia caused the problem.  The next attempt will be to expand the chia with water, then mix it in with the bulk substrate before pasteurizing. It seems adding the dry seed is slowing the access to the nutrients of the chia seed The flushes perform slower during colonization and fruiting through several flushes.

TEXAS YELLOW CAP: CHIA SEED TRIAL #3:
REGULAR CASING APPLIED AT 100%

This is a 3 tub grow. 2 tubs have no chia for comparison. 1 tub has chia. all tubs have the same substrate formula.

Water was added to the chia seed and expanded for 30 minutes. The difference this time is that the chia seed was expanded without heat treatment prior to pasteurization.

Substrate Ratio Per Tub:

  • 5 Quarts of WBS spawn
  • 8 Quarts Strawnet/Verm/ 1/4 cup chia seed.
  • Grain was prepared by Slurried Spawn
  • 2.5" Sub Depth

Casing:
Cased with 50/50 verm/coir/gypsum

TUB 1: no chia(control)

TUB 2: no chia(control 2)

TUB 3: CHIA(trial)

Conclusion yield was higher in the chia tub on the first flush this go around as 6oz dry. The control tubs yielded 5z dry each. this trial will be continued further when time permits.  trial 3 was cut short after first flush due to vacation.

UPDATES TO COME. THE NEXT TWO SPOTS ARE RESERVED FOR THE UPDATES.

Thanks, pasty. I will be creating an entire series throughout the next month or so, along with a grow log which will include isolating a few strains of the z-strain variety.

buck, yeah I remember that scene. :laugh2:

I'm a huge fan of any grain prep that involves visually checking for moisture and doneness.  Kudos!  Interesting write-up, mike.

good job mike I was waiting for your write up.

I do wbr on the stove but the same as you, in increments. I also supplement, I don't have access to hemp or chia so for me its different types/colors of rice with other grains and seeds I can find at the grocery store (in Asia, mind you).

The reason we only let the wbr grains get to 2/3 hydrated to where the kernels are still white in the middle is wbr is still shakeable at this point. Once you get fully hydrated, rice bursts like a mother fucker and is only good with kimchi.
