Decade old spore print...

Anyone think this print I made about 10 years ago is still viable. It's been stored in a dark, cool, and dry place. Still looks good but should I waste my time and supplies on it?

You may have to force hydrate the spores under a slight pressure.

Not sure how to go about that. Any recommendations?

Not set up to do that kind of work here.

Forced hydration was done by willsolvem I believe. He made a syringe with old spores that wouldn't germinate and filled the syringe, put a rubber band on in such a way it put slight pressure on the plunger and left it a few days.
I imagine the same could be done in a jar with only a single ship. Add spores, add water, inject sterile air to pressurize.

Sounds interesting. Maybe I can pull one syringe after 24 hrs of hydration and then apply some air pressure to see if there is any difference. thanks

If the spores are just a cube and not something special to you I would NOT do it. If it is a special print to you give it a try. Anything over five years is not worth the trouble IMO.

Stropharis had a write-up quoting the forced hydration technique. Just make the syringe, replace needle with syringe cap, and put weight on the plunger with the syringe resting vertically. Rubber band will probably work too, but just leave them to hydrate for a day or two before using... might work if there's any viability left.

Maybe it was stro then. It's been a long time since I ran across it.

It was someone else, he just quotes the write up in his write up.

Stro's Spore Salvage with Forced Hydration Stro's Spore Salvage with Malt Yeast Carbon Agar (MYCA)
The originality in the write up I did on forced hydration was the simplicity of the rubber band method. Both Auxin and RR discussed forced hydration prior to my writeup.
It's not impossible but it is very unlikely you will get those to germinate. Remember, the drop in spore viability is a ratio game, so don't be shy with them, keep us updated.

Much thanks, it's worth a shot.
