New to pedros, what now?

So, basically what happened is my buddy was given a rooted cutting, i believe. He put said cutting about an inch into some pot soil. (As in mary jane) Then i showed up later that day, and he gave it to me.
So this cutting is about a foot long, it looks like it has a ton of new growth on the crown, its a light green and looking like its getting a chubby. (~4" of new growth)
My question is what next? I try not to support monsanto, but should i throw it in some miracle gro cactus soil? Should i make my own?
Like i said im new to pedros. And most cactuses. If you know of good currant cultivation links, post them please. Thanks guys and galz

Make your own soil.
I am not satisfied by regular soil mixes. I usually buy a Basic soil, like say black gold, and amend it. My amendments are Sand, I usually buy the white sand, as its nice as a top layer for seedlings, and also as a mix in the soil. I get Pea sized Lava rock,.. and recently, I was able to source some pea sized limestone gravel for my cacti.
I will say that as a cactus, Trichos can deal with a bit more moisture than some other kinds of cacti.
Never ever have your cacti sitting in standing water. they do not like water logged. In general cacti, like well drained calcerous to loamy soil. (some species feed on limestone rocks even.)
My suggestion, is .. read up on the (Stone eaters thread).

The thread will give you some ideas, but I suggest reading and doing some research before you go out and buy soils and sand, and limestone gravel. We all have our favorite mixes and ratios that work. Some people swear up and down, to NEVER USE PEAT, as an example. . so, Lets see who else responds here. At least I hope maybe I gave you something to go on. as a start.
Trichos like: Pedro and bridgesii, are fairly forgiving as cacti go. . but yeah you can Maximize results with the right soils and growing conditions.
good luck. kizatz

I use potting soil, sand and gravel, perlite, and vermiculite. You'll be fine though just using a store bought cactus soil, and you'll also be OK using regular potting soil, Pedro's aren't picky.
