Discreet Flow Hood
    #21839404 - 06/21/15 09:31 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

I recognize that I'm less then 100 posts in too shroomery, let's move past that.

So I've been growing for a while now, pf teks and such, but getting much much more into straight grains lately. My SAB is as effective as I need it to be, but it's a total pain in the ass; especially now doing G2G, I use a lot of 1/2 gallon jars.

I've had plans for a self built flow hood when I move, but that's still nearly a year away.

So here's what I'm thinking:

I buy the two main components (fan/filter) now. I take a heavy duty XL trash bag and cut the bottom away from it. Using Silicone I seal the newly cut opening to the rectangular opening of the fan. I then seal the top opening of the plastic bag to the edges of my HEPA 12x24x12, just like you would with wood. I'd have a leak free air chamber pushing straight from fan to filter. It's of course a lot more vulnerable without a wood casing but I'm not worried about accidental damage.

I can't really see a downside but before I spend the $300~ on fan and filter I want to bring it to the table and get some opinions...

Can't see why it wouldn't work in theory. Don't think it would be very durable however.
Also, I'm no expert on hoods but the lack of rigidity and strange shape and creases of the garbage bag could cause uneven flow.. just a thought.

Yeah I think my only real concern would be the force of the blower overpowering the strength of my seal. I'm not worried about any 'uneven flow' because it's nonsense. The blower will do it's job and push air, which will have only 1 place to go: through a HEPA air filter. I'm thinking if I apply my silicone, place the bag, ziptie it all down, then use a pin to poke holes all the way around the bag where the silicon is lined; with some gentle pressure the silicone will squeeze through the pin holes and dry with a firm grip on the HEPA.

You are barking mad if you think a trashbag will hold enough pressure without bursting at the seams.

Just search schmuv box. You can buy the components so you have them but your idea likely won't work.

Also its gonna be loud as a mofo so there goes discreet

The noise is fine… it's really just a space issue. I'd be using the components to build a legit flowhood down the road but why is it you're thinking it won't work? I'm all for constructive criticism and working toward solutions so let's figure this thing out.

Drake says the bag will burst at the seam but I don't know that I'm as quick to agree. It's not like wrapping a balloon around a fan where the pressure is simply building and building until it pops. The air flow has an escape through the filter regulating pressure. I'm not thinking about using a regular kitchen trash bag either, I'm talking about super heavy duty types they use on construction sites.

But let's indulge the idea that it would still burst at the seems, and not just go calling people mad without trying to contribute... What if I took a tarp, used a heat sealer to double seal it to itself in an O shape? That would certainly hold a lot better then a heavy duty trash bag and I'm still able to keep the whole thing tucked in a corner until moving day.

For the space of the stretched out trash bag you could just build one. Hell my box isn't but about 18in deep.

My 24x24 hood is smaller than a speaker amplifier simply because I got a compact filter and not one of the 12in deep ones requiring a foot of plenum.

For the bag not to burst you would probably need a filter with high flow/low resistance which won't be the greatest for actually using as a hood but good for scrubbing air.

Yeah you can build one with off the shelf wood and a hacksaw and drill.  Why be discreet?  I have seen 12x12" hoods if you want to start small

The trash bag plenum idea sounds really awkward. Whats discreet about a HEPA filter attached to a blower by a trash bag? I think that would draw more questions than a built flowhood box.

Yeah you guys are right. Thanks I sometimes just need to hear other people thinking about it to get out of my own head. I've ordered my Blower (465 CFM) and my Filter (24x12x11.5). I'll be building it up right.

Discreet was probably the wrong word to use, I think I was looking for (1)easy to assemble/disassemble when I move. And (2) a back up plan if my construction skills fell through . I psyche myself out easily when It's something I haven't done before but I just had to remind myself… you're just building a box with a hole in it idiot. Everything should be here in about a week, I'll probably have it built a couple weeks after that. (I procrastinate like no other).

When you get it built please upload photos.

LOL!  I have a commercially produced flow hood.  The sound isn't THAT loud, and it certainly isn't offensive sounding...just a decent hum and a bit of a whooshing sound - not much louder than your  average conversation.
