It is readily available in supermarkets. The moisture content is pretty assured to be 13-14% which is of benefit to me but not most, outside of this range it does not pop well. It is quite clean looking and shakes well compared to lighter less dense grains.
I am not recommending it by the way, and do not use it much.

Popcorn can be a good spawn but be careful that you do not let the jars get too hot in the PC.

I honestly hate using popcorn for its low nutrients, and it's hard to get the moisture content right. At least that's how I feel.

I dislike popcorns low number of nock points and the high cost. Its almost as expensive as RGS. If you cannot find anything else it works but that is all I can say.

I actually don't really like a lot of butter with my popcorn.

I used to use feed corn, which is basically the same thing. $7 for 50 lbs.
It's easy enough to prep, just PC it for a half hour, drain an dry.
It just doesn't give flushes like WBS or rye though. It also doesn't colonize the bulk sub as fast.

I like it for making GLC. The large surface area makes for fast colonization and a crystal clear liquid culture. It shakes easy and recovers quickly.
With that said, my experience also says that the lower inoc point count creates slower substrate colonization time. And the low nutrition leads to poor flush performance and yeild.
There are better choices than popcorn. And they cost less.

expensive, takes more time to hydrate, grains are very big so less myc per jar compared to other jars as there is less surface area per gram.

This is what I wanted to try, though I have gone off GLCs, I would definitely cook it for a lot longer than normal. It does shake well and does not seem to take on much water easily which is good for GLC. I found other grains got too wet and the GLC jar did not recover well.

With popcorn I've "stripped" it for GLC 3 times without problems. I may have been able to do it again, but didn't want to push my luck.
Each time it recovered within about a week.

Popcorn is easy to prep, probably the cleanest spawn you can get. It's more expensive than WBS but still cheaper than rye in some locations. It colonizes quickly and the jars are easy to shake even when nearly full.
It might be lacking in some nutrient, as I've noticed yields are usually mediocre except when used in addition with another type of grain. Also some people have found it difficult to sterilize although I haven't had any major problems.

There's mycelium inside the grain too and unlike the surface mycelium it doesn't get torn off and stuck to the jar when you shake it. I doubt the surface mycelium even contributes much unless you take advantage of it and make a GLC.

Lol did you look at the picture? The popcorn pops. It's not supposed to do that when you're using it as spawn.

In a pressure cooker the popcorn shouldnt pop at all, regardless of temperature. However, if you were to say, pull the weight off the steam valve, THAT could cause some poppage
