I thought it was just light being weirdly refracted into hypersensitive eyes.

There are a few potential reasons
1. Lsd increased the connectivity in the brain - you OVER associate - so when your mind recognizes a basic pattern and at the same time you're tripping, it projects an over-associated pattern onto the image
2. The mind is based off perceiving patterns
3. The secrets of the universe might have to do with geometry
4. You under/overstimulate perceptual organs - this alongside the reduction of perceptual filters allows the brain to "fill in the spaces" where there are none
there are more possibilities - and likely more than one apply - but I don't theres anything thats agreed upon
-------------------- Just because I am arrogant does not mean I forget my place. It is how I choose to talk. I am not a monk. I am my own path, and I am without influence. Talk to me about my core being before you question my mental stability or life-choices. Chances are, they're only shocking to you because they don't fit your idea of what is.

I once had a vision about what was actually making the geometric patterns.
I was seeing very vivid morphing geometric patterns for quite a bit in meditation. Then they started to just slow down to the point where it was a frame by frame then eventually to completely frozen.
The message I got from it at least was.. It was the mycelium left in our DNA. If you can imagine one of these complicated mandala's, then just erase enough of the geometry to resemble mycelium reaching out to connect and complete them at a hyper fast speed.

Random thought: Maybe the shapes make up our reality like how a computer runs on binary 1s and 0s we run on a serious of shapes in an infinite pattern

The answers were recently determined by googles "deepdream" program. I forget exactly where the page was that explains it, but to my naive understanding you have 30 neural layers which each recognize increasingly complex details. Ie in the first few layers your brain will recognize basic curves, edges, shades, etc. In the next it will recognize another layer of detail, etc. If i'm not mistaken, the way it gets geometric images is to feedback one of these intermediate layers. So it starts looking for details based on an incomplete image and builds the images from memory. Or something like that... Google explained it much better.
For those who are interested though. DeepDream is now open sourced :P http://psychic-vr-lab.com/deepdream/
The prevalence of animal visions is due to the fact that they trained it to recognize animals mostly.

I notice a lot of those geometric shapes in churches/stained glass etc - old religious buildings/temples/mosques and the like. They're also in banners - logos of organisations / secret societies and the like. I even see them in wheel trims / alloys sometimes. Then there's nature - the shapes of flowers and cobwebs and all sorts of other stuff. Personally i think it's energy patterns of consciousness. We build into physical reality what exists at source - like the cosmic consiousness recreated as the internet.
