Mushrooms smell like yeast/slightly rotten smell. Are they contaminated?

Hey sorry if this isnt the correct forum im new. I recently finished caking my cubensis ecuador. And put them in the fruiting chamber a week ago. They smelled like rotting yeast from the start but after seeing the possibility of bacterial infection i am now starting to fear that my shrooms arent normal and are infected. This is my first grow so i really dont know how they are supposed to smell but from what i hear its supposed to be an earthy mushroomy smell (not mine). I use verm. Brown rice flour. Organic rye mix as the medium. My mushrooms have only recently started spreading mycelium around the tub. (Its plastic sealed with holes on the side). I dont know if they are supposed to smell rotten before they fruit or not but either way im worried. People say mushrooms dont smell at all and for the most part mine do not but i occasionally get a whiff of the foul odor from 5-6 feet away. When i open the tub the smell is horrid, but that might just be me. Again, they smell like some kind of yeasty rottenish cheese, but its not so bad that i have to look away. Its just an unpleasant smell, not enough to really make me wretch. Any help would be GREATY appreciated as i am very inexperienced and im really worried for my cubes

Did you use rye in your bulk substrate?

Any mushrooms that grow will be fine to consume. However that mess is unlikely to produce any mushrooms. Looking at it I would say that is going to turn lots of colors soon. I would pitch that before it does.

None of your grains look colonized. Can you describe your procedure to us? I think I know what you did wrong.

Just do yourself a favour and get that out of your house.
Seems to me that you've read through all the different techniques scrambled them all together and thats what came out lol
Just start again from scratch and follow a tek to the T. If you wanna go with cakes, once they are fully colonised fruit them in a SGFC with perlite, or you can use the cakes to spawn a bulk substrate like you tried to do here. But don't add any more food to it, that's where things went sour, literally!

Aww dammit. Well i mixed in verm rye and brown rice flour in the cakes to make jars of the stuff. After two week they seemed colonized so i made more of the same mixture as bulk and spread it in the box, uncapped the cakes and slid em underneath. Thats about all i did, leaving 12/12 cycle spraying twice a day and i had a fan on for 5-10 minutes a day to circulate the air. I spent half an hour looking up molds and contams. And to me the only thing that seems off is the smell but then again i am new to this scene. The whole chamber is only a week old and i am quite sure the white spots are mycelium (correct me if im wrong). If you need any close up pics of anything please let me know but if something is wrong what do you think it is? I want to be sure the box is fucked before i toss out the work. I have two more jars caking now, are they contaminated as well?

What do you mean by dont add any food? The bulk substrate is pretty deep and looking in from the side you can see lots of colonized material. I just dont see much on the surface, your right. So you need any better pics? As far as my noob mind can tell, the cubes are still early in their development. Is it at all possible that their taking a while?

Okay, got it. So here's the problem. There is a rule we use in this hobby, and it is absolutely and totally imperative that you follow it always. Ready?
Never, ever expose a nutritious substrate to the open air.
Both bacteria and molds will set in and you'll a room that smells like stinky feet and mold spores everywhere before long. That's the purpose behind the SABs we use to do transfers, or the vermiculite layer and the cap on your cakes. You can crumble and spawn to a bulk substrate ONLY if it's non-nutritious to most organisms, like CVG.

If you're saying that you used brf and rye grains in your bulk mix no wonder. Those things cannot be used as bulk. Bulk materials like manure straw and coir verm can be spawned to in open air provided they are properly pasteurized. Grains and flour must be sterilized and kept sterile until full colonization.

brf + rye grains is not a bulk sub. it needs to be sterilized and stay sterilized until 100% colonization.
just follow frank's 12 steps next time!

Use coir and verm. They are nearly foolproof. You can get away with sterilizing them by accident. Manure or straw are less forgiving but if you perfectly pasteurize them they make an excellent substrate.
