Think I could add brf to popcorn to increase production?
    #21834332 - 06/20/15 10:17 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

I hear with popcorn..
Quote:

The large kernel size means there is far less surface area for the mycelium to colonize, so it appears to colonize faster because a quart jar of popcorn will finish in less time than a quart of rye or wbs. However, since there is FAR less surface area to colonize in a quart of popcorn, what appears to be faster colonization is actually much slower because only about 10% of the mycelium that a similar sized jar of rye would be produced, is produced with popcorn.

..Do you think adding brf to a popcorn jar and then steam sterilizing would get er done? I'm looking for a truffle producing substrate with no vermiculite. Maybe the dry layer, but that's it.

If you want to do it for truffles, why not rye or oats?  Popcorn has a lot of problems even if you get past the huge endospore issue with steam sterilization.  I find it really difficult to hydrate them properly, for one.

I'd suggest rye berries man, a bit of organic coffee and gypsum and you have the BEST substrate possible, truffles explode in that stuff. You can order it from any health food store in 25-50 pound bags. Trust me, you won't regret it.

If I see them tomorrow at Sprouts I'll get some, but I hear I need a pressure cooker; I don't know if my regular steam sterilization is going to be enough for whole grain. Or are they pretty sterile after letting them simmer for a while?

It's best to invest in a pressure cooker and take the rye berry route. It's well worth it and grains are not hard at all to work with. I started with grains and never looked back. Opening a dozen 80g jars will make your day

A sound mycology investment my friend. Not too expensive either plus you can use them for cooking food and stuff. My friend makes the best pressure cooked chili!

Popcorn is actually quite easy to hydrate. Just boil it until the starch is no longer white in the center of the kernel. If you were attempting to soak it, I can see how you could never get it right. Since it would probably take 2-3 days to properly hydrate through just soaking it.

A cheap one will get the job done, right? What's a minimum size requirement? Those all american ones are expensive as fuck.
