Dairy cows. You should be fine. And dairy cows won't have calves with them and mist dairies artificially inseminate. So no bulls. But note this, dairy bulls tend to be much more aggressive than beef bulls. I'm guessing cause they fuck all the cows once a year in a few days and beef bulls fuck year round Also note that you will probably not find cubes in dairy cow manure, as it's loaded with lots of protein and tends to be too "running."

This evening however I was on a walking trail in my neighbourhood and came across a big group of them. The first group scattered and i continued up the trail. There was loud and persistent mooing in the distance and eventually as I was walking up the trail, a big cow walked out of the grasslands and cut me off at the pass of the trail. She held her ground and didn't seem to want to move, all the while staring me down. I backtracked a couple hundred meters and went on another trail maybe 50m past the side of her, and she held her ground and watched as I passed.
As i walked out of the woods I passed probably a dozen other cows - most who just watched as i passed but didn't seem threatened or threatening. However the first one that cut me off at the pass seemed like she felt threatened and made me feel uneasy. I suspect she was guarding her young...
I've never really considered a cow to be dangerous - but this experience made me reconsider.
Any information is appreciated.
Hahahahahaha if you add a twist and an impossible violent end. Then you got yourself a B-rated horror flick.

Would you breed a guard dog with a herding dog?
We had Guernsey, Holstein and jersey cows. They were bred with the appropriate bulls.

Just close your eyes and think "dairy".
Be careful though since you're the one intruding in their turf. All animals need space respect-and shrooms to grow in their turd. Damn, I wish that last part were true for us haha Imagine.

I used to walk by cows a few feet away several times a day for many months. They were never too concerned with me.
But when it was a mama cow with her calf, oh man, you gotta steer clear and never get between them.

If the cow doesn't have a calf then the thing you need to watch for is the bull. If the cow has a calf, stay the fuck away or she will straight up kill you. For that matter, if you see what appears to be a calf by itself, stay as far away from it as possible. It is not by itself.

On the other hand I did get chased down a mountain but mama bear after scaring its cub! Not looking to repeat with another species...
FYI - i live in semi-arid desert, definitely not mushroom country!
I assumed these cows were jersey (black and white) - they actually seemed bigger than the brown beef cows we usually have around here. This land is owned by one of the big local dairies...
(just checked wikipedia - they do look like jersey cows)

I know of a farmer who got killed by a cow. It was in the stable. The farmer was between the wall and the cow and the cow just leaned in, crushing him. Probably meant no harm, wanted to be close, but dead he was.
Respect cows but don't be scared. They are herbivores.

I worked on a farm as a teenager, this mexican kid that worked with me jumped on the back of an old heifer like she was a bull once and she got pissed and bucked him off. Then she ran away.
Juan was an asshole though. He tried to stab me in my leg with a fork once. Lucky nothing happened. But shortly thereafter, 3 high school football players from Clovis NM were helping us buck alfalfa and Juan called this big mother fucker named 'Joe Bob' 'Blow Job' one day at lunch so the three guys dragged Juan into the tool shed and dry smashed him.

But he was always fucking with he cows.

The normal cows aren't damgerous at all really and will mostly run away from people. Which is what it seemed like happened with the packs of cows that scattered as you said. But the Bulls, which are the leaders of the pack are dangerous. They will charge and trample people if they are challenged or threatened. Kind of like the silverback gorilla, they protect the pack. When they start digging their hooves into the ground and thrashing their head up and down is when they're about to charge. But mostly if you just leave them alone they'll be okay and won't attack or anything

I'll provide some context:
I was climbing a mountain behind my house, offtrail - basically bushwhacking. I came up the side, over the top and was about to crest over onto the front face of the mountain and descend. There was a small rise and when I went over the rise, on the otherside was a cub which then got spooked and ran off. I turned around, nearly stepped on a grouse (which took off and scared the fuck out of me), and proceeded to quickly start descending the front side of the mountain as planned. The mountain consisted of large basketball sized boulders and scree so my footing wasn't great and I had to choose my footing wisely. Within a few minutes the mother was following behind maybe 15-25m (really not too sure on distance) and eyeing me up/staring me down. I would stop - yell, pick up sticks and pieces of logs and try to make myself look big and scary, and she would crock her head and look amused at me. I would descend for another couple minutes and she would stay the same distance behind me and I would repeat....
This continued until I was a substantial distance down the mountain and eventually she lost interest and went back up.
There wasn't much else I could have done in that situation. I suppose I could have stood my ground and tried to look big and scary hoping she retreated, but with her above me and moving quicker on the difficult ground than I was, I felt like I doing what I did was a good option.
(FYI - this is a black bear, not a grizzly)

Every now and then I read in the papers people getting killed by cows in different ways, but overall domesticated cows are pretty safe animals to be around. I used to have a bull that would always charge me from the day he was born to the day I butchered him 6 months early. That Cow just had a mean spirit altogether and the meat even tasted mean.
