Are cows dangerous?
    #21834300 - 06/20/15 10:10 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

A few times recently i've been running into groups of cows pasteuring in the woods while I am hiking or walking. The first time they scattered - I was surprised to see how fast they could run through fairly dense/steep forest.

This evening however I was on a walking trail in my neighbourhood and came across a big group of them. The first group scattered and i continued up the trail. There was loud and persistent mooing in the distance and eventually as I was walking up the trail, a big cow walked out of the grasslands and cut me off at the pass of the trail. She held her ground and didn't seem to want to move, all the while staring me down. I backtracked a couple hundred meters and went on another trail maybe 50m past the side of her, and she held her ground and watched as I passed.

As i walked out of the woods I passed probably a dozen other cows - most who just watched as i passed but didn't seem threatened or threatening. However the first one that cut me off at the pass seemed like she felt threatened and made me feel uneasy. I suspect she was guarding her young...

I've never really considered a cow to be dangerous - but this experience made me reconsider.

Any information is appreciated.

It was probably protecting a calf. But any time something 10 x my size warns me off I pay attention.

Anything that weighs that much is dangerous.

What he said, they can be protective.
Just be thankful ranchers don't keep bulls with their herd.

Yes, cows are dangerous.  If you run into an angry bull, you can become a statistic very fast.

Find me a grill that can support the weight of an entire cow.

I grew up on a dairy farm. Dairy cows are pretty gentle for the most part. They are handled and touched a few times a day.
Beef cattle are usually more timid than dangerous. They don't get the daily interaction that dairy cows get.
On occasion, you will get a mean cow (both dairy and beef) but it's rare.
A bull is a different story. We had some bulls as cuddly as a kitten and others meaner than satan.
If you are trespassing and spook cows, that is an alarm to a farmer if he's near by.
Just keep your distance from cows since you're not familiar/comfortable with them. If one does charge at you, first out maneuver him/her and then run. Go up a tree or jump a fence. I waz attacked by a cow and got underneath for while she kicked me like a soccer ball fir 40 feet. She was a mean bitch and i carried a cattle prod anytime i went out to gwt the cows while until she died years later.  She tried to attack me one time i didn't have the prod (like she knew) and i kicked the fuck out of her. I was always scared of her, but towards the end, we had a mutual respect for each other. She lived to be an old cow and i was sad when she died.
So, to answer your question, no, for the most part cows are not dangerous. But they can be.

This is the kind of reply I was hoping for - so thank you.

These were dairy cows and I wasn't trespassing to be clear. This is a public "nature park" which is built on land partially owned by a dairy farm. It's the first time i've seen the cows out there and I was surprised that there were no signs or anything indicating that they were pasteuring in such a public area.

I felt 100% comfortable passing all of the other cows, but that one that cut me off had it out for me, you could see it in her eyes. I had a tree staked out that I was going to climb if it came to that....
