also of interest, the red flag with a blue x with stars on it.

that was never EVER the confederate flag.

despite the fact that they showed that in my history books.

as for if they were a democracy or not:

it was just more fair to different states, it was basically a fix of the constitution.

I think the confederate flag should be allowed wherever they want it to be. I mean, it might have been a flag of slavery long ago. But the meanings change. As rxb pointed out though, it wasn't even the confederate flag.

But even if it was a symbol for slavery, I think it has taken on a new meaning than what it was for. It's supposed to celebrate states rights. And if that is what it means now, then the meaning has changed.

I think that holding on to offensive words or symbols that happened generations ago and still considering them offensive is stupid. It just perpetuates the negative meaning. It's better to just make fun of the negativity and turn it into a joke, or just make it another word that has no actual meaning today. Just some stupid meaning from long ago.

its a freedom of speech thing, people have a right to express their horrible horrible views.

the CSA wasnt about slavery, the civil war wasnt fought over slavery.

the dixie flag was used for pro slavery.

and it should all be legal, because free speech.

as a symbol of free speech it should be worn as a symbol of gayness

then the idiots will stop wearing it

Even if you totally ignore slavery that flag still represents treason to the United States. It represents a total disregard for democracy. Flying a confederate flag next to an American flag is the height of stupidity. A true confederate would burn the American flag.

Slavery, Treason, Anti-democracy. That is what the confederacy was founded upon.

the north was abusing the south before the war and those states left because they wanted fairness and democracy.

"Pause, I entreat you, and consider for a moment what reasons you can give that will even satisfy yourselves in calmer moments--what reasons you can give to the nations of the earth to justify it? They will be calm and deliberate judges in the case; and to what cause or one overt act can you name or point, on which to rest the plea of justification? What right has the North assailed? What interest of the South has been invaded? Can either of you today name one government act of wrong, deliberately and purposely done by the government of Washington, of which the South has a right to complain? I challenge the answer!"

Excerpt from a speech delivered by Alexander H. Stephens at the Secession Convention of Georgia, January, 1861.

Democracy means that the minority must live with the will of the majority. Election results must be honored. The Confederate states were like the kid in your neighborhood who didn't want to play anymore because he was losing. That is not democracy.

"That the right of the people of a single State, to absolve themselves at will, and without the consent of the other States, from their most solemn obligations, and hazard the liberties and happiness of the millions composing this Union, cannot be acknowledged; and that such authority is utterly repugnant, both to the principles upon which the general government is constituted, and the objects which it was expressly formed to attain."

President Andrew Jackson, message to Congress, January 16, 1833.

Thomas F. Goode, Mecklenburg County, Virginia, March 28, 1861, Virginia Secession Convention, vol. II, p. 518, "Sir, the great question which is now uprooting this Government to its foundation---the great question which underlies all our deliberations here, is the question of African slavery."

Methodist Rev. John T. Wightman, preaching at Yorkville, South Carolina: "The triumphs of Christianity rest this very hour upon slavery; and slavery depends on the triumphs of the South . . . This war is the servant of slavery."

G. T. Yelverton, of Coffee County, Alabama, speaking to the Alabama Secession Convention on January 25, 1861: "The question of Slavery is the rock upon which the Old Government split: it is the cause of secession."

Robert M.T. Hunter, Senator from Virginia, "What did we go to war for, if not to protect our property?" (property = black people)

John B. Baldwin, Augusta County delegate to the Virginia Secession Convention, March 21, 1861: "I say, then, that viewed from that standpoint, there is but one single subject of complaint which Virginia has to make against the government under which we live; a complaint made by the whole South, and that is on the subject of African slavery."

We aren't a democracy.  A democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what's for dinner

The confederate constitution was a "fix of the constitution?"

Article I, Section 9, Paragraph 4 of the Confederate Constitution, "No bill of attainder, ex post facto law, or law denying or impairing the right of property in negro slaves shall be passed."

Yeah, they sure fixed it alright.

I found this powerful and compelling. A symbol just like the flag is.

It isn't her decision to make.  Mr Roof truly believed in things.  Does that make what he did OK?

To love is not just to create the new but also to destroy the old.

I believe the confederate flag now does more harm in the world than good, so in the name of love, take it down and destroy it.

It is a piece of cloth.  If you want to ascribe a certain symbology then perhaps you would like to be consistent and ban the Chinese flag the Russian flag the North Korean flag and every flag of every Muslim nation in the world

When asante is feeling full of love (and mxe) he loves everyone and everything including the flag. When the love (or mxe) is a little low, he talks about hate and the need to destroy. Love is not about attacking what you don't like or don't believe in. Love is always nurturing and healing, never destroying.

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.” (attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville political philosopher Circa 1835)

I'm no friend of flags that represent tyranny. We must get past the tyrany and conquer the hearts and minds of their adherants.

Therein you err. Even hate is a form of affection. Destruction is love too. As long as you destroy Yin and not Yang.
