Don't you see though, this whole thing is starting to becoming a joke making fun of itself its getting so convoluted and I think thats what Pris1 is trying to get at. (maybe?)

Real talk here; one of my best friends uncle was a middle aged man with Downs that had an unbelievable love for Garth Brooks and the movie "Turner and Hooch".  Great guy!  (Should have seen the Christmas they gave him a "Chris Gaines" CD.  He Listened to the fist song and took it out and fucking smashed that shit to pieces screaming, "NO...Just NO!" That was absolutely one of the funniest things ever.)
But he knew he was retarted and straight up would say, "I'm retarted".  It didn't hurt his feelings in the least.  The only people that this type of politically correct agenda serves are the people around this fact trying to create more and more convoluted names to call these groups of people in order to feel better about themselves.  Not any real social change in how we look at these people IMHE.

Wasn't "retarded" at one point a medical term? I figured it was probably okay before kids in schoolyards grew up calling things they didn't like "retarded" and then continued to do so as adults. It probably doesn't carry the same hurtful connotations for your friend as it does for many younger people with intellectual handicaps. I believe words like "moron", "imbecile" and "nincompoop" were also once medical terms before they were made into insults.

Perhaps, but it always seemed to me that the more politically correct our nomeclature gets, the more convoluted this whole issue becomes.  And isn't it reaching flat out ridiculous proportions at this point?  I mean where do you draw the line in the sand? Pretty soon every word to describe anybody is going to be a racial/classist slur; and eventually nobody will know what the hell anyone is talking about.
It just seems overkill IMHO.  Where does it stop?

Don't get me wrong semanticism has its place.  But when it comes to the point where nobody even knows who they're refering to when they talk about anybody class or group of people.  Doesn't it become nothing but confusing and over the top?

Do you have trouble interpreting the expressions "intellectually handicapped" or "learning disabilities"? Sometimes, words are really hurtful and the polite thing to do is just to adjust your language. I feel like anti-PC people go too far with their arguments about "free speech" since AFAIK the government doesn't punish people for using politically incorrect language, you just tend to get in trouble with other citizens because it's unsophisticated, rude, and potentially inflammatory for people who feel insulted when you use these words. In a lot of cases "PC" is just newspeak for "speaking politely", which every adult has to do from time to time. I think it's so weird that so many right-wingers believe that politeness is a leftist conspiracy.

This is, of course, nonsense.  The avoidance of pointing out unpleasant FACTS is not a lack of politeness in the political arena.  It is, in fact, a duty to do so.  This has nothing to do with not saying to someone that they have a fat ass when they ask about their pants and that it isn't the pants that make them look fat.

I'd agree!  But also you have to take into account that at a certain point the semanticism in all this just gets so convoluted its borderline beurocratic bullcrap designed not to make people with downs or aspergers or whatever "mental disability" (for ignorance of a better word) feel better.  It just seems to serve their parents and other people with supreme leftest veiws make themselves feel better, by making it feel like they've done something of value.
It's no as if it really promotes any reall significant change in how people treat other people.

You do realize that helium is not destroyed when it is put in a balloon and goes back into the atmosphere from which we can extract it again, right?

zappaisgod, where the fuck were you with that link when I was trying to tell moonrockmushy self imposed segregation is in fact a real thing? He was in complete denial and drug a simple statement out 5 or more pages..

That article was in the paper today and would be irrelevant to moonrock because he doesn't think there are races.  Which leads me to ask him, yet again, that if there are no races how can there be racism?  I'll just say that he lacks what I call intellectual rigor.

It's not like I don't think your hearts in the right place.  I just think it seems like it really doesn't do much to change how the common man sees people with developmental disabilities.

I have a stepson diagnosed with Asperger's.  He is pursuing a PhD in chemical engineering at an Ivy League school and should be finished within a year.  Don't use those two terms in the same sentence.  It makes you look like an idiot.

Again, sorry for my ignorance, I sisncerely am not sure of the proper nomencature.   I'm sincerely not suggesting that people with Downs or Aspergers or Austism as stupid or anything like that.  I was just raised in a place where it was socially acceptable to use these terms to refer to people.  Sorry if I offended you or anybody else.

I've found in my short life here on this planet some of the people I've known with down syndrome and autism have been some of the nicest most down to earth people; and they've honestly been the most understanding, smarter people I've ever known.

I think Downs' is pretty much what it is for everybody with it.  And you are absolutely right, all of the ones I have met are very nice.  On the Autism spectrum there is a huge range of functionality and, for lack of a better word, charm.  Some of them are sweet and some of them are complete assholes.  Some of them function and some of them wear hockey helmets.  Asperger's used to just be considered social awkwardness until they gave it a name.

I know a guy with Asperger's, he's undeniably very intelligent but he struggles to detect and interpret social cues that most people take for granted and it can make him come across as rude or obnoxious. I would never guess that he was "developmentally handicapped" unless he told me so, I'd just think he was a douche. Even considering he is Asperger's, I still think he's legitimately a douche even putting aside the stuff that he can't help. Calling him "socially retarded" would do him too much of a favor because it would make it seem like being a douche isn't his fault when it is.

I'm sure.  Hell I'm sure some of the people I grew up with would fall into some of those categories had they really been tested at an early age.  But I definitely don't consider it at disability, nor do I necessarily belive people with downs necessarily have one either.  It's just at a certain point (perhaps its where I grew up) some of those terms just get so convoluted it borders on beurocracy.

This is pretty true.  The thing is, he is aware and makes a real effort to not be an asshole.  I have been with him for 20 years and I can assure you that I have let him know when he is being an asshole so maybe that has had some effect because he's actually a good guy now.  He's just awkward.  Got a girlfriend finally as well.  She's a bigger asshole than he is but at least he's getting his dick wet.  The other stepson is a complete asshole

Well in the age of Tinder when you can literally just text a myriad of people down to fuck, it's just a different game today.  Even from 10 years ago the dating scene is completely different.
