'The Great Spirit is everywhere; He hears whatever is in our minds and our hearts, and it is not necessary to speak to Him in a loud voice.'
'All the things of the universe are joined with you who smoke the pipe — All send their voices to Wakan-Tanka, the Great Spirit. When you pray with this pipe, you pray for and with everything.'
So Black Elk was a medicine man; of the Oglala Sioux, but he was also a Heyoka.
Heyoka is you might call a 'sacred clown,' they do things in an unusual manner to help wake people up. . . this might be like riding a horse backwards or dressing very warmly in summer and pretending it is very cold.
Maybe a month ago or so I noticed a way of doing this. . . walking on all fours is like this - and it has so much benefit. . .
for 1, you are feeling the earth with your hands, it helps to be closer - another, you are facing the earth. . . it is a nice practice, for this. . .
you can feel the earth is round. .
another reason, is by doing so - let's say if the ground is rocky - then, it will naturally be more likely to do so very slowly. . and reverently - reminding me of 'walk like you are kissing the earth with your feet' - Thich Nhat Hanh
another thing is - feeling she is round - it is like you are climbing. . .
another factor of it, is doing things in a new or different way, helps to see, feel, or understand more - when change occurs, we are usually at our best.
and one other - beautiful thing about this - is, it has a really wonderful effect on bodily health. . . it removes pressure. . . it is really wonderful.
so - back then i realized this is kind of like Heyoka in a few ways.
1 other thing, a side note, how similar Black Elk and Thay have always seemed to me. .
a few months ago, I realized, part of this is they both lived through wars, and their attitude for peace is almost identical.
for instance,
'The first peace, which is the most important, is that which comes within the souls of people when they realize their relationship, their oneness, with the universe and all its powers, and when they realize that at the center of the universe dwells Wakan-Tanka , and that this center is really everywhere, it is within each of us. This is the real peace, and the others are but reflections of this. The second peace is that which is made between two individuals, and the third is that which is made between two nations. But above all you should understand that there can never be peace between nations until there is known that true peace, which, as I have often said, is within the souls of men.' -B.E.
'If in our daily life we can smile, if we can be peaceful and happy, not only we, but everyone will profit from it. If we really know how to live, what better way to start the day than with a smile? Our smile affirms our awareness and determination to live in peace and joy. The source of a true smile is an awakened mind.' -Thay
'Your first love has no beginning or end. Your first love is not your first love, and it is not your last. It is just love. It is one with everything.' "
on children:
'Grown men may learn from very little children, for the hearts of little children are pure, and, therefore, the Great Spirit may show to them many things which older people miss.' -B.E.
'Children understand very well that in each woman, in each man, in each child, there is capacity of waking up, of understanding, and of loving.' -Thay

Not to mention:
With visible breath I am walking. A voice I am sending as I walk. In a sacred manner I am walking. With visible tracks I am walking. In a sacred manner I walk. -Song of the White Bison Woman who brought the sacred pipe to men.
and some of Thay's singing goes like this-
'The mind can go in a thousand directions, but on this lovely day I walk in peace, With each step, a gentle wind blows, With each step, a flower blooms.'
