Will it grow?
    #21831034 - 06/20/15 01:24 AM (8 years, 7 months ago)

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN! Welcome back to a new settlement of "Will it grow?". I am your substrate for this evening, Galba Cubensis, and will be showing you, hopefully, some fineass, intelligent-discussion-worthy entertainement! "Let's watch", RR.

Ok so Im new to both mycophelia and this forum, Ive been trawling it for almost two months now, gotten my two syringes (one broke in the mail ofc), inoculated 3 jars and "birthed" one. "Why "birthed" ?", hold your syringes youll see soon enough:wink: Since the forum is so old I never had to ask a question, allthough maybe I shouldve, who knows:smirk: Anyway I decided to introduce myself and my first "cultivation" in the end. 26 year old male from Norway. A little background info first:
In Norway we dont have vermiculite, yes paradigm shi(f)t, neither do we have perlite, not readily available at least, only polar bears walking the streets:confused: But we have Leca pebbles, or "Geolite" I think you call it. Rye grains are/were a BITCH to get hold of, but yours truly never the less made it happen. I've also went ahead and made a terrarium, scratch that, fruiting chamber which looks like this:

The bottom is filled with water, leca pebbles and chlorhexidine. The latter cause peroxide was 3 times the price, I think the clorhexidine will do just fiiiiine, but then again what experience do I have? Except for "Dont check whats behind door number 2!" ofc... The pool has been sitting there for only 3 days now, so Ill have to come back to you on that one. The lighting is on 12/12 schedule and consists of one CFL bulb at 6000K with 1,8k lumen. Considering the box is about half a square meter that should be over 3600 lux, which is way above the least recommended of 2k lux right? What, directing your focus onto the math didnt stop your from noticing I used the word "meter"? Well sorry ladies and gents, this is an educational program only, so we'll be using SI units hence forth:crazy2:

The one jar Ive birthed was made of oat meal only, and cooked in boiling water in a metal pot at normal psi (well it had a lid....) for 2 hours. Now how did I nail that PERFECT moisture level youre asking? Oh thats right, I didnt... Like a perfect retard I winged the substrate recipe by arbitrary opinion. Safe to say the jar's walls were WET around every oat meal grain, and the bottom wasnt drenched, but maybe soaked? This even with the oat meat grains fully saturated:blush: Yes... Yes, yes, yes... This impatient sob right here inoculated it :blazed:  :patlal:

Now that youve gotten that out of your system we can hopefully move on. Fast forward two weeks and some mycelium is growing in there but has stopped (I injected ALOT to be "on the safe side"), many large wet spots too ofc. After thinking about what to do for 2 days (I dunno how I found the patience for that, but other mycological experiments probably had something to do with it), I opened up the jar, fished out/"birthed" two mycelium pathces after tumbling around in there for an eternity and closed the lid again to see if the little left over mycelium maybe will restart colonizing cause of FA (the jar had the classic two holes with alu foil on top though)? I layed out the mildly foul smelling (but not close to some of the other stuff Ive smelled these last weeks) two mycelium patches on alu foil in the fruiting chamber.

So yeah, not even sure what the hell I have here. I figured since I have two I might as well try to dunk one of them, I figured the largest one:cool: But the reason it says "dunked" is cause the "dunking" consisted of me POURING a couple of ml of untreated tap water right onto it. Why? I dunno, lazyness I guess... This was 1,5 days ago. Ive been venting the FC many times since, taking care to keep the humidity at least over 90% (the pictures were taken a couple of minutes after venting). Yesterday I noticed that some really white and new-looking mycelia were forming around some of the edges of the old ones on the "dunked" dumpling. Yes thats what we're calling them now, and no Im not chinese, I told you Im norwegian, now stop interrupting me! So I whipped out the syringe, which now had destilled water in it, and patiently dripped several ml on the undunked dumpling.

So theres the evenings noob story ladies and gents! You have all the facts:
*Substrate inbetween pasteurized and sterilized?
*Jar had wet spots but no molds
*Both dumplings are "dunked", whatever that means this evening
*Both dumplings are mildly smelly (not that "sweet" earth kind either)
*Theres chlorhexidine in the water/leca pebbles
*You can see the mositure and temperature on the pics

Only thing left now is for you to vote people, Will it grow or not?

Oh and btw the strain, what Im growing? B+, a noob's best friend right? Incubated at 30-33 C btw. I didnt see the sclerotia stuff til after I ordered, but its fine anyway, I wanna do it "the right way" bahaha!
Will it grow my man???
You may choose only one

Lol. I really enjoyed reading through your post.  Funny story.  I figure it'll grow.  I don't know if some of your ideas would be considred 'standard', but when I look at the pics... yeah, looks good.

Don't you think you'd be better off using pf tek until you get a pressure cooker? I know you said vermiculite is hard to find in Norway but surely you can get it somehow maybe order it online?

Personally I don't hold much hope for those dumplings fruiting but you never know

best of luck

Welcome to the shroomery, brother. :mushroom2:

I certainly enjoyed reading your first post, and is by far the best introduction I've read in quite some time.
Certainly entertaining and a bit informative as well. Good job!

Unfortunately my mushroom cultivation knowledge is quite limited, but if you have any further questions about your grow then I suggest you post them on the Mushroom Cultivation board of the website.

The Pub is geared more towards random topics that have to do with everything from mushrooms to current events to sex and everything in between. Think about it as conversations you would be having in an actual pub with your friends over a good beer.

Enjoy your stay here (which will be forever) :astonishedmustache:

:peace:

Thx for the warm welcome guys:smile:

Babies, I think we both know Id be better off doing that, but Im long past the point of no return, Ive used 2 weeks now to experiment back and forth. This ofc before watching RR's videos, which wouldve saved me alot of time... I see it as the same old dilemma of keep ordering something from abroad a little pricier than it wouldve cost here, versus investing a little more at the start in researching alternatives, but then using less money every time Im making "a batch". I also suspect crushing the leca pebbles to smaller pieces would virtually give me vermiculite, but this has yet to take place:tongue:

Yeah I was a bit unsure if I could put it in the Mushroom Cultivation board since it only had 3 pages, which is very little for 10+ years imho. I was afraid that maybe it was reserved for more experienced ppl, or that I might even be considered a troll cause of the tone of the post. Not to mention this COULD be a thing to talk to my friends over a beer at a pub, at least when told in that certain way. But I had no idea how broad the forum was, that it can move so far away from "the topic". Anyway, just wanted to provide some entertainement for more experienced cultivators while at the same time grabbing a quick hint of what they think of my chances:tongue2:

Alright so, what does Norway have against vermiculite and perlite? Is it a law? If so, what do you guys know about verm and perlite that we don't?

I seriously doubt it will grow. All of that exposed oatmeal is going to be a nice colony of bacteria soon if it isn't already. Good thinking though using different methods and experimenting. If you get the water right, it will probably work. I think when you used extra inoculate, you added even more moisture to an already wet substrate.

Patlal where did you come from? I hope it was ok I used your picture as a meme, I didnt know you were here:sad: Its not as much a law as just old superstition from the viking age back when we were 19. Word on the icy street is that these are the go-to guys for getting your hands on some:
http://log.no/produktkategori/dyrkningsmedie/

But the problem is they only deal in big quatities and with ppl they know. You cant even register on their website unless you already have a customer number with them, which I hear is pretty hard to get a hold of since we're only 58 ppl, I mean 56, Oddvar and Sigdvisfrid are on vacation abroad til Thursday or Friday, skiing takes some time:crazy2:

As a side note, I went ahead and followed a 25:18 volume ratio recipe on rye grain preparement I saw on youtube, which seemed too dry, then another one I found on this site 3-4 weeks ago 25:21, both these were before I saw RR's video. The 25:18 has had nothing happening ever (but I guess no bacterias + mold is a bit of a win too?). I added some destilled water a couple of days later and sealed the two holes with wax. The 25:21 had some mycelia but also seemed to dry out after a week, so this one also got just a couple of ml destilled water (yes some of it ran into the mycelia:crazy:) and waxed holes, afterwhile it hasnt shown any progress. I actually FORGOT a pretty important side-thingy in my original post:

Wtf is this you ask (sorry for the unfocused pics)? The third, long sought after and coveted piece of the mycelia I was talking about. Not the little left over spot in the jar (which hasnt shown any progress), but a smaller piece I totally forgot about. A pre-prepared plastic bag of a substrate consisting of wood chips and half grinded wheat in a 10:3 volume ratio with :2,5 parts water. I know, measuring wood chips in volume:rolleyes:, but Im just trying to come up with a nice, cheap and easy standard method "for Norway". The bag was cleaned with chlorhexidine as well as the inside of a shot glass which was firmly pressed on top (the substrate's like playdo). Then a scalpel flame sterilized and used to make and small hole beneath the shot glass. I put the little mycelium dumpling on top of this hole under the shot glass and pressed it even further into the "dough". Thing is, it still came from the same jar as the two other ones, and therefore also has that "not earthy", smelly odor (bacteria I reckon). The mycelium has shown alot of very white, silky growth since, but as you can see its faced upwards, while the "bacteria" are faced downwards towards the substrate, so yet another wait-and-see I guess...

But at least I have the rye grains in back hand, prepared the RR way and stashed away. Is it considered blasphemy to say that Im not planning to get a pressurecooker right away?
EDIT:Ive used some of the grains for oysters from dowels and shiitake from millets, both from mushroombox.co.uk through ebay. But most is still standing to check for contaminants while I wait for some prints from reddit, woop woop:syringe:
