Help Identifying this Mushroom?
    #21829471 - 06/19/15 06:56 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

I found these mushrooms growing in the woods around my house close to a small tree. Decomposed/decomposing wood is extremely abundant on the forest floor, which is where I saw them. There was a rather large cluster of the bunch. I live 35 minutes away from Baltimore, Maryland. I've been wondering if this could be Gymnopilus Junonius or a related mushroom of sort. Sadly, this is my best and only guess..
Any help whatsoever would be appreciated

Update: I've completely dried it and it appears to be a darker brown on the cap, whereas the rest of the mushroom appears to be a rusty orange color. See pictures in one of my replies

This is one of the undescribed species that goes under "Hygrophorus hypothejus" in North America.

Are you sure? After doing some research on the mushroom you named, most websites say it grows almost solely in piney areas. I'm positive that there are no pine trees close to where this mushroom was found, so I'm not sure if that's it's type or not...
Your mushroom is also supposed to be a winter mushroom, so I'm a bit skeptical here.

This is a drier picture of the mushroom. I'm noticing a mild smell coming from it, whichis just barely fruity.

Good call, now that I look closer I think you have a chanterelle.    Probably one of the recently described species.
