Hi.
Would you mind posting some links that would help this guy out.
I can play very basic guitar. I can play box of rain, heart of gold, fire on the mountain, franklins tower...when I say I can play, I mean, I can hold down the rhythm for a minute - and then usually lose it. if someone else is playing, I can solo briefly with them. I practice a lot, but it tends to be repetitive (e.g., playing the songs I know and play).
I am currently using Fruityloops, and through a Boss Controller/Effect thingy, I am sending the guitar via usb.
That is the background. What I need, is help on my music tracjectory. I want to put in the time, but is it really just watching youtubes and modeling people, or is there a "rythym" or "code" to the guitar? If it's not, please teach me music theory and/or guitar (share resources).
I would hate for this thread to turn into "scales are stupid" and "my pick is longer than yours", as I would like to reference this thread often to continue my learning. Folks have asked about the guitar before, but I also hope this thread includes basic music stuff I should know (e.g., I IV V), etc.
??
Thank you in advance for thoughtful replies.

The trick to getting rhythm down is your strumming technique. Practice any of those basic songs until you can play them endlessly and are able to do chord voicings. Another way to practice is to mute the strings so you can get the strumming pattern down without having to focus on the chord progression.
Start working on simple 2-3 note solos while doing alternate picking. You'll find once you can keep the rhythm constant everything else will become much easier. If you cant play for whatever reason at least practice chord shapes and stretching. You gotta get those calluses in line
When it comes to theory the best thing you can do is memorize the major chords and their shapes. This will help a ton since those shapes will repeat throughout the neck. Learn the major and minor pentatonic plus their extensions, it'll help with playing mechanics and sliding.
for youtube teachers look up pebber brown, marty schwartz, papastache, justinguitar
Hope this helps!

just keep doing it.
scales, get your barchords down.
techniques, songs that get stuck in your head.
writing your own songs would be the quickest way to avoid criticism. even if its not great, if anyone gives you any grief, you ask them to show you one of their songs.
worst case you get humbled (embarassment is a great motivator!), best case, they teach you their shit and you steal it (but make sure to throw in a bridge or a key change or something)
