Casing questions for mono tub..bubble wrap?

1. If I am using hpoo/straw as a substrate, can I put a thin layer of it over the mixed spawn so no grains are exposed?
2. After that ^^ colonizes, would I add a casing layer and mist until the casing is glistening and THEN 'set it and forget it'?
3. Should I use bubble wrap to create a humid environment at the surface level of the substrate even though I have a casing layer?
4. I know that people say that cubes doesn't need a casing layer, but I wonder if misting a colonized, uncased substrate where myc isn't protected is a bad thing..
5. I am also aware that there are different size hole placements one should use depending on if they cased their sub or not, true?

1. Yes
2. No need for second casing layer
3. No bubble wrap
4. Misting mycelium makes it smooth and that can dry out a bit. Misting it isn't a problem but letting parts dry out is.
5. Standard monotub holes will do.

I do one. It works good.
I've never done two.
I tried a wax paper casing layer and lost a tub. It could have been bad spawn.
I've had subs dry out because I pulled them out of colonization too soon. Thinner substrates (2" depth). My deeper subs seem to hold moisture a lot better.
I've been using mini-shotgun hybrids but I'm moving on to some mini-dub tubs. I plan to start with three 1/4" holes and two 1" holes per tub with a 4" substrate. If it's not enough FAE I'll add a couple more 1/4" holes.

1. Differing opinions on layering vs mixing I always mix and don't worry about the top layer.
2. Yes, I like to use a pasteurized non-nutritive casing layer.
3. The casing layer is enough
4. I always case so I can't really respond from experience.
5. The holes are for FAE. Your environmental conditions are more important than whether or not you cased.
