Laptop battery discharged completely overnight while shut down
    #21827462 - 06/19/15 10:06 AM (8 years, 7 months ago)

I got a new battery, a 9 cell, for my latitude e6410 laptop. I got it in the mail yesterday. It was completely discharged when I received it so I had to put the ac cable in my laptop to charge it up. It got to 100% and I unplugged it. It gets really good battery life. After about 3 hours my battery went down to around 60ish%. I then shut down the laptop. Well I woke up about an hour and a half ago, pressed the power button, and then the black screen told me my battery was low, I pressed F1 to continue booting. After login, the computer went to sleep. I put the ac power cable in and then pressed the power button to wake it up. It showed 0%.

The strangest thing is that yesterday, the battery wear level was 0% according to both BatteryBar Pro and BatteryInfoView. And TODAY the battery wear level is showing at 30% ????????????????? What the FUCK?

Is this normal? Do I need to take out my battery EVERY time I shut down the computer?

A new battery should never come with 0 charge. Sounds like a mobo problem but without having physical access to it it would be hard to tell. And ignore that guy who thinks it is because it is a dell. Dells have pretty much the same insides as any other laptop.

Dells aren't bad at all, sure they have some shitty cheap options, but I have an XPS  13 that is really a nice machine with great specs that beat the new macbook pro, a very sleek design, and it has a starting price of 800.

I fried my last computer's(a macbook pro, incidentally)  motherboard with some chai tea and it would have costed in the neighborhood of 700 to get it fixed, so I just went with the xps. no ragrets.

That being said, op, that's not normal or acceptable for a new battery, I'd send it back if I could and have them replace it. You can still use it without a battery while you're waiting, just keep it plugged in until dell sorts it out.

I bought it from ebay. A battery should be stored at 50% charge. It should NEVER be fully depleted if purchased brand new.

Sounds like maybe a bad battery. Don't buy batteries on eBay. Unless it's from like a very trusted vendor.
Or you have some kind of power drain / short or something with your motherboard... it should not drain completely like that overnight while off.
Did your old battery have a similar issue?

My old battery does NOT have this issue so I know it's not the motherboard. I JUST bought this laptop like a few weeks ago refurbished so I know I have a good motherboard.

On the one hand, when I'm using this laptop, I get GOOD ASS battery life. But the fact that it completely depleted overnight is really not normal. I mean I like this battery, it's an authentic dell battery, looks like just the one on the dell website.

But it obviously wasn't stored correctly in the warehouse. The one on Dell's official website is $150. The one on ebay was $50. This is such a hassle.

If I bought it from Dell, do you think they would store the batteries at 50% like they PROPERLY should?

If you fully deplete the battery or keep charging it when it is at 100%, it will either stop working or stop working over time, respectively

This is so fucking confusing. Are PC batteries completely different from Apple batteries???? I know with my old macbook battery, it NEVER depleted, and I ALWAYS kept the charger in even after it reached 100% and I never had problems.

These dell batteries seem pretty finicky if you can't even keep the charger in past 100%.

The battery is working good right now. Getting good battery life. But I'll have to see if it depletes tonight when I boot it down and go to sleep.

If I am not mistaken, if you leave certain types of batteries (commonly found in phones and laptops) to charge after 100%, over time they hold less and less charge

Yeah, not really.. that is kind of overstated. You can leave it plugged in at 100% just fine, over years, yeah sure it will degrade.. but it's not anything that serious.
The biggest concern with that is overheating. If you leave it plugged in all the time AND the laptop is getting super hot/runs hot.. then yeah it's not a good idea and that will hurt the battery. But if the laptop stays relatively cool, leaving it plugged in is fine. I left one of my laptops plugged in 24/7 for a couple years, the battery still held a charge fine. Not as good as it used to... but all batteries will degrade over time regardless.

One of the worst things you can do with a Lithium-ion battery is discharge it completely to 0%, frequently. That will kill the battery faster than most things. And leaving it at 0% and not charging it back up as soon as possible. It's not a big deal if you let it discharge completely every once in a while, but if you let that happen frequently it will shorten the life of the battery significantly and can make it unable to hold a charge at all.

And no OP.. Apple batteries and PC batteries use the exact same technology. Probably made in the same plants for that matter.

I'm guessing you probably just have a bad battery if your other one works fine.

Yeah, usually what happens with phones is when you leave them charging for a long time (like 8-12 hours) the phone gets really really hot on top of the degradation. I noticed after 2 months, my phone only held like 70% of it's original charge afterwards

Yeah that would be due to the battery overheating more so than charging it. Of course.. leaving it charging after 100% is what caused it to heat up.. but on a laptop that's not as big of a concern as they have better regulation of the electricity and active cooling.

Shouldn't you leave the charger in for a little bit after it reaches 100% to get it a trickle charge?

No  it's not like a car battery. Laptop batteries are only good for so many cycles. And leaving a battery on a laptop that is not on for an extended period of time can ruin the batterys ability to hold and or keep a charge. My best bet is still that you have a dead short somewhere after the power  supply goes to the battery. This would explain a fully charged battery draining down over night. Any one can argue what they want but this is most likely the culprit. I have 0 to gain by telling you this so send the battery back and try a new one.

Ok well this new battery did NOT deplete after shutting it down and going to sleep for the night. It was only 1 percentage down from before powering it down.

So now what? The ebay seller won't be back in the office until monday so I won't hear anything till then.

Did this battery just need to go through one cycle? Funny how it depletes the very first day but after that it is now holding a charge, losing 1 percentage is normal.

Yeah that is strange. Is it holding a normal charge now? The symptoms you described earlier were thatof a short somewhere between your power supply and the battery but hey if it's working now don't mess with it.

Yes, it's working now. It was only the VERY FIRST night that I got this new battery that it depleted completely overnight while powered down. I guess the battery just needed to go through one little cycle to normalize itself.

Nevermind. The battery wear level went down to 50% and it's not holding a strong charge anymore. This battery is being sent back and I'm getting a full refund. I've already printed the shipping label to return it.

But I really need to ask a question, I'm going to buy a battery from the official DELL website. There are 2 batteries I want.

9 cell 90 wh

9 cell 81 wh

The 81 wh battery has a 3 year warranty and the other one only has a 1 year warranty.

Same price? Makes you suspicious that they feel the 90 wh one they can't guarantee for more than a year. I would go for the one with the 3 year warrantee if you are planning on keeping the laptop for a while.
