Worried about a bad "trip" while under anaesthesia for surgery... (Ketamine)
    #21825360 - 06/18/15 08:25 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

I have to go in for surgery soon.

The operation will be 2-3 hours long and I'll be knocked out the whole time. I'm expecting it to be ketamine but perhaps it'll be another drug, I don't know for sure.

My last surgery was ketamine.

I'm really worried not about the operation itself but that while under for 2+ hours i worry I'll have a bad k hole LOL

I don't know if this is a legitimate worry, like will I dream/trip or will I just be totally gone?

I don't have any desire to be in a k hole for 2+ hours right now so I'm really hoping knocked out means I won't remember or be even slightly conscious for the duration of the operation.

Ideally I'll wake up in the ward and not remember going into surgery.

How knocked out is knocked out for surgery? Even if they do use ketamine, is there any chance I'll have bad dreams or anything?

2+ hours of bad drug induced dreams is the only thing scaring me about my impending surgery...

You have nothing to worry about. I can't imagine that Canadian surgery is performed all that different from the US. We use a combination of drugs here. First one is Versed, which  is given before you're even in the OR. This is a highly amnesiac benzo. It calms the nerves, and will wipe the patients memory of the process. Then there's fentanyl for pain, propofol & anesthetic gas to complete the process of putting you to sleep. While it's true that some people do come out of it, that's real rare.

Correct me if I'm wrong dissociative users, but I don't think there is such a thing as a bad khole. In my experience with dissociatives, your emotions are so suppressed that it's hard to feel anything very strongly aside from occasional weird emotions.

Plus, I've heard anesthesia is like having time removed from your life or something like that. You blink, and it's over, and the time in between is lost forever.

I believe that the anesthetic dose used in surgery for ketamine is much higher than that for a K-hole, because it needs to bring you past the point of any consciousness

Ketamine sux I would hate to be high as fuck on K durin surgery

If it is legitimate surgery, you will receive over 4 times the amount of ketamine that would put you in a k hole, you probably won't even know you are still slightly conscious.

I've had some very frightening experiences with K but that was during an intense candy flip. Did a little bit of too much nasally and I thought I was dying. It was a very bizarre experience which is beyond my ability to describe it - kind of like a cosmic joke that was stuck in a loop. Absolutely no way to effectively explain it but I remember the feeling very clearly. It was like flipping pages through a book and each one was a death. I was with a group of friends who weren't familiar with K and it really freaked them out. Thankfully it only lasted a few minutes.

Ketamine is much more enjoyable in small dosages IMO.

I'll add that coming out of it doesn't mean you'll really feel much. Probably just aware of what is happening, the sensation of touching/pulling without any real feeling, and feeling really, really high  Apparently it's only a ~1:19,000 chance, Zombie.

I wouldn't worry about having a long/bad k-hole if you get it again. The benzo given before will get rid of the weird, and combined with the high dose of ket (higher than intended for a good hole) make for no recollection whatsoever as Salomon described.

Do they really still use K for anesthesia? Over here they only use it on infants and the elderly because it doesn't surpress respiration as much.

Yep. When I had my bypass surgery some years ago, all I remember was looking up at the operating room lights, then the next thing I know, I'm waking up in the recovery room. Relax, you'll be fine, OP.

You can tell the anesthesiologist your worries about ketamine before the operation. He'll probably offer the verced/propofol combo. You can ask him/her for it. Let him know you're opposed to the gas too because it'll make you sicker than an opiate overdose.

What sort of surgery are you going in for? I hope its not related to your RC ER experience.

Anyway if you have worries talk to your doctor about midazolam.
