PCing sprouted grains: Worthwhile or futile?
    #21823873 - 06/18/15 02:24 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

I've searched and found some varied opinions.  Some say if the grains are sprouting after soaking, toss the jars and start again.  Some people say if X percent (and it varies) are sprouting, then it's OK.  Others said just go for it, since you're PCing them anyhow.

So, I soaked my grains, drained and distributed them into jars, and in the 1/2 day of cycling through to get them all PC'd, some of the grains have sprouted.
If it was *your* setup, would you bother with PCing the sprouted jars for a G2G split?  Whether it's yes, or no, what's the logic on it?

My scientific background is bacteriology and virology, not mycology, so let me present my educated guess for either praise or ridicule, which ever it deserves...
Even though the grains have sprouted, putting them through a PC sterilization cycle is no different than what I used to do with the unused portions of competent cultures when I worked in a lab:  Autoclave the buggers so nothing is left alive.  The nutrient content of the media isn't changed, carbohydrates are still carbohydrates, but the bacterial portion (or in this case, seed sprout) is dead as a doornail.  Since I'm growing stock standard cubes, which can thrive on a bulk substrate such as straw (the product of a sprouted grain), there isn't any reason why a G2G scale-up wouldn't work on rye berries which went a bit past their prime, and started to get a taste for life.

Experienced growers/trusted cultivators... Care to weigh in on this theory?  If I'm totally off base, pointing and laughing is acceptable as long as you offer a scientifically backed rebuttal as accompaniment.

When grains sprout, some of their complex sugars turn to simple sugars so the plant can use them. Your mushrooms don't eat simple sugars.

Grain is cheap, start over.

These are the TEKs I use. They're all as cheap and easy as possible, just like your mom.
