Does anyone use a hotplate???
    #21823462 - 06/18/15 12:45 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

Does anyone use a hotplate? Specifically one that is capable of running an AA941 or same size sterilizer?

The heating element in an AA75x is 1600watts but its also on the inside of the unit.

I've read through a good deal of the threads and in theory a 1800watt burner would be fine but does it hold the weight? Does it cycle on and off on a long cycle allowing psi to drop before it kicks back on?

Looking more for a "this is what I use with no issues".

The threads about hotplates are usually a " will this work?" And then never a follow up.

Also it hurts since I'm limited to 110v

Well the main drawbacks of hotplates is that they're typically not designed to withstand hours upon hours of being on high heat. Most will warp or break down pretty quickly. They also tend to take a very, very, long time to build pressure.

Find a durable hotplate (there's several model recommendations in previous threads) and you should be fine using an aa

I only use gas (NG in Garage (homebrew setup), Propane outdoors if required or Butane 10K BTU Burner indoors as standard) now as I once put my PC on an electric burner and it warped the bottom so doesn't sit flat anymore.

I wouldn't put a loaded 941 on an electric element at all. Get a propane burner for like $10.

I've got burners but I'd like to be able to run this indoors in case it's raining etc. I have limited workspace in the garage.

Plus my burners are extremely hard to adjust in small amounts. It's either almsot a pilot light or its an inferno

I'd just worry about physically collapsing an electric element.

Yeah no that's kinda my worry too. You can find cheap single electric burners for $20 but they're plastic and even though they may be enough wattage they will either soften and melt or shut themselves off.

I've come across a few cast iron hotplates with metal housing but they're at least $120 and up.

How is using a propane burner, indoors, different from a propane stove?

I would imagine a propane stove has a safety feature or two. Ionno, just doesn't seem safe to me for some reason.

Fair enough.
I'm fairly vigilant, when PCing, but can only fit 2 cookers on my propane stove at a time. Adding a camping style burner would enable me to run 33 jars at once. 19 in my 941 (Canadian jars are slightly larger), and 7 each, in my 915, and Mirro 22.
Upping my spawn ratio, each week, and loving it!

I hope you find the right solution...

yes, propane indoors is considered generally unsafe unless you have an appliance designed specifically for indoor use (I.E. LP Stove)

Check out the cadco hot plates. Those are the ones everyone seems to use.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00125PC5K/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_zIZGvbBS67TXM

Another thing you might consider doing is buying a stopcock for the 941, which will essentially turn it into a 1975x.

The other one that gets really good reviews is the waring.

http://www.amazon.com/Waring-SB30-1300-Watt-Portable-Single/dp/B000I14C7I

They'll both work, but with a 941 they'll probably take a long time. It would be nice if blindingleaf chimed in on what he uses.

Yeah I sent BL a pm but haven't heard back. Actually I haven't heard from him since I came back. He was one of my favorites.

I may just say fuck it and run on an outdoor burner. Save $150 for some other toy, maybe a bacticinerator and something else random.
Then if I keep selling out at the farmers market I can add another one as I have 2 outdoor burners and just make a Y connection so that both have the same amount of substrate, water, and gas running to them.

I think I'm going to run into a problem fine tuning the gas flow though. My burners are not made for fine tuning. Is there some type of accessory that I could add in-line to better control gas flow?

So converting a 941 to a sterilizer, can it still run @ 20psi like the AA75? Is it safe or am I stuck running at around 15-17psi?

Also do you need to replace the blowout plug as well? I know I need the stopcock dealt to replace the weight.

Apparently all you need to convert the 941 into an autoclave is the stopcock and vent tube. AFAIK all the other parts are exactly the same. The existing over pressure plug should work just fine.

I thought they had different overpressure plugs? One will allow a vacuum and one won't I believe.

But is it safe to run a 941 17-20psi like the 75?

I wonder if hamloaf will weigh in. He's the one that told me about the necessary modifications you need to make.

For what it's worth, I think the stopcock is what makes the autoclave a form a vacuum, because it stays closed unless it's venting steam. That means the inside is airtight and will form a vacuum once cool. Also for what it's worth, I've taken my 23qt presto up to 20psi and the overpressure plug didn't pop, so I can't imagine an AA would.

I remember RR saying the overpressure plugs were different. The 75 having a red one that would form a seal upon cooling and the pc plug which would let air seep in.

Maybe I should just keep the original plug so its not too damn hard to open.

No you're right. It is a different overpressure plug, but it's only 5 bucks. You could turn a 941 into a 1941x for probably another 50 bucks. I'm not sure what all it involves, but I'm pretty positive that all the AA lids are machined the same way, just using different parts depending on whether it's a canner or an autoclave.

As far as I know from reading you just replace the weight nozzle with a stopcock one and replace the overpressure plug.

I may leave the original plug so it won't form such a high vacuum. Maybe order a red one anyway so I can try it one way then another.

Any idea to my question of if it's cool to run a 941 @20psi like some do their sterilizers?

Is the sterilizer heftier then the pc?

The metal bodies for the canners and autoclaves are identical AFAIK. I'm sure all of them can handle way more than 20psi too.

If your pc is inside, the outside of it is going to be filthy lol.
Given that you don't run it in a filtered lab

Replacing the weight regulator with stopcock allots for A lot less water to escape during the PCing cycle, thus makes it possible to do longer runs at higher psi.  If you want device to pull into a vacuum, then you will have to add the capillary tube.  Changing the black plug for the red one will also need to be employed when modifying your AA 941 PC into a Steroclave.  Good luck!

Are there any benefits to having it pull a vacuum hamloaf? I thought that just by replacing the toggle spout with the petcock would seal it?

how does the capillary tube come into play?

Dude ive burned out many a hotplate from long runs. Some brands only lasted like a month.
Its hard to get a fully loaded large sized pc up to temp but once you get there its all good.

The brand to get is proctor silex. ive been pounding on mine for 3 years since I got it...

Nah, replacing the weight regulator with the stopcock doesn't seal the PC, BUT it causes A LOT less water to escape the PC, thus longer sterilization runs can be employed at higher psi's.

Not sure of how the capillary tube comes into play, nor acutely aware of what advantages there are to having your sterilization vessel pull into a vacuum.  Never been that analytical about the subject.  All that's known is that AAx's that came with capillary tube, and stopcock & pull into a vacuum.  Modified/hot rod AA941 only has the stopcock conversion with red plug, and it looses A LOT less water, but doesn't pull into a vacuum.

Ham I see in one of your threads where you say the 941 has a very old petcock on it and with a new one it may pull a vacuum.

Do you still think this?
I'd rather not have to purchase the capillary tube if it's not actually needed. I guess I could run a test and see if it is hub?

Correct, Ended up replacing the stopcock with the new stopcock.  Ran it a few times, and by accident broke the new style replacement stopcock.  No vacuum was pulled.  Luckily the old stopcock was kept, and was used to re-replace the new stopcock, and production carried on.

Provided below are three threads started over the matter.  RR chimes in a bunch.

Just out of curiosity, what is the total watt-hours that you pull during a 2 hour sterilization run.  I'm assuming you aren't pulling the full 1600 or whatever it is the whole time...

I have no idea, but I do know that the 25x will use a lot less electricity than running my 23qt presto on the stove.

They look badass. I've wanted to upgrade my sterilization setup for a while, and at first I was gonna go with a 930 and a cadco hotplate. That would have cost considerably more than the 25x I scored, so I did well.

The OP is asking about which hotplate will run a 941 though. Do you think the cadcos are powerful enough? I didn't think they would have any trouble with the 930, but the 941 is fucking massive.

I don't use propane period. My current apartment doesn't have natural gas, and I have a charcoal grill. I think it largely depends on utility prices in your area, and honestly I have no idea whether the money you would save on your utility bill every month would outweigh the up front cost of filling up a propane tank.  I have no idea how to figure it out mathematically, but I'm inclined to say it's really not likely to make a big difference.

I will be running my 941 outdoors on a burner during the summer but for winter I'd like to bring it inside on a plate.

If I'm going to spend the money on energy it might as well go towards heating my home as well.

Hopefully by the time winter comes I will have enough spare cash to buy one of the more expensive 2000w plates. The AA75x uses an immersed 1650w element so I would think that an external 2000w element would be at least equal.
No doubt its not as efficient as an internal element but its what I will have to work with.

I am inclined to believe this would do the job and hold up to the weight
http://m.ebay.com/itm/371057347589?nav=SEARCH

Nvm that's a 220v model but I believe I have seen 2000w 110v models. Maybe I should just say fuck it and decide to share my dryer outlet lol

I don't think you'll find a 2000 watt 110 v model.
You still won't get what I'm saying about running the pc outside?
As far as weight goes, weld together some angle iron to go around the plate the same height as it

Weight wise they can. But a 1600 watt only got it to 3 psi after 2 1/2 hours.

The angle iron support idea is a good one, come hook that up for me on weldmaster lol.

I'm sure it's much dirtier to run it outside but if I can get it to pull a vacuum like a sterilizer I don't see how it could cause any harm long as I wipe down the outside before bringing it in a semi clean workspace.

I know how long it takes my stove to get stuff up to temp and that's 220v and upgrading to a larger pc its going to take at least 4 times as long with a 110v plate.

I believe the only economical way to go about this is to use a 220v plate. I really do believe the one I linked would hold up. If you look at the reviews of some of the other cadco broilkings that have been posted they mention running pressure cookers with them.

I think imma have to find one of those rollers that trash cans sit on or other type of dolly to more readily move this thing around though.
