New to the Forum, looking for help with S. Louisiana Mushroom Identification
    #21822810 - 06/18/15 09:06 AM (8 years, 7 months ago)

Habitat:
I have been working recently in a cow pasture in Southern Louisiana and have come across many of these guys. This has been over the last week, so early summer months.

They have mostly dark chocolatey brown thin gills. A few of them have lighter, almost white outer gills, with a darker brown color inside the gills.

The stems are long and slender and whitish, ranging from one and a half inches to three inches long. Some brown, some purple coloring. Always a ring or skirt around the stem near the top.

The caps are white with some brown and some purple coloring. The have slight nipples in the center and are mostly flat but some are more conical shaped than others.

I haven't done much to bruise the mushrooms, but when I have I've noticed purple bruising.

I've done spore prints on about fifteen thus far and notice very dark, rich brownish and purplish spore prints.

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. My guess is that they are of the Psilocybe cubensis species but, as I said, I'm an amateur so would like to be sure.

Here are some photos I've taken of the evidence:

Thanks!

Thanks doctorghosty. Does anyone have an opinion on whether the photos I posted here are identifiable as a safe mushroom for consumption?

Doc identified them for you, they are cubensis. They are psychedelic, and they are safe to consume.

They're pretty nice cubes at that. Nice find.

I've gathered more shrooms from the same setting as before (cattle pasture, S Louisiana, growing from cow patties, etc). It was a couple weeks later and, though they look mostly to be of the same species as the last round (psilocybe cubensis), none of them produced spore prints. I prepared the prints the same as last time. The shrooms were a lot harder to find this time as compared to last, and it had been a lot dryer in the preceding week. I'm wondering if this can just be attributed to the shrooms being too dry to produce prints and, if so, whether they're still good to eat.

I've attached a photo of the shrooms (ignore the prints, as they're still from the previous round) along with two photos of a separate shroom I picked which doesn't look like the same kind but I thought was cool looking and has a lot of cool blue coloring.

the last one is the same, just a less mature specimen and one that has had some stress so it has oxidized somewhat.  IMHO

ps: if the mushroom is somewhat dry--not super dry like the ones on the far right of your first pic--you can put a drop or two of water on it and cover it with a glass to try to induce spore drop.

Thank you Relic. Good tips! In your (or others') opinion, am I safe to assume all the shrooms pictured are psilocybe cubensis?

welcome.

i'm just someone who used to travel far south once every summer (20 years ago) to shadily scavenge fields commando style, often at night, for cubes, so take whatever i say with a grain or two.

they all look good. just make sure they all truly bruise blue (similar to that fantastic reaction where you cut the stipe on that immature specimen!) and have the correct print and you're good.

Haha, ok, ok. It's all good, I could just see it being misleading to someone looking to give you feedback because I left information pertinent to this thread in my title and original posts. People could respond to you thinking they're responding to my querries, and vice versa. Plus, I'm still curious to get further responses to my posts.

I'd recommend starting a new thread and asking your question there.
