coir question
    #21821785 - 06/18/15 12:58 AM (8 years, 7 months ago)

Hi guys, couple of quick question in regards to wood loving shrooms , is it ok to still use coir + verm in fruiting chamber or am i better off using another sub. Lastly, i read the fine print on the coir i purchased that it contained fertilizers, im worried the fertilizers will kill the mycelium, or is it ok.cheers

You're better off getting coir without fertilizers.

I think wood lovers would love wood.

Where did you buy this coir? I'm assuming a garden store. Go to a pet store and buy some woodchip bedding for rabbits and hamsters.

And good luck getting any wood loving species to fruit indoors.  It's been done, but it is not easy and hit and miss even amongst the best growers.  Much better of to stick to cubes or other soil/dung psilocybes. or if you want something with more kick do pans.

Just make sure its the right kind of wood. Look it up on the search. I personally have never tried wood loving species but have read about it. I remember being cautioned about using pine due to acidity.

I would look for a better brand. I always use Eco Earth (loose coir) and have never had a problem. I always steam sterilize mine because it is faster and there's less mess to clean up, and have had a good success rate. Coir is very resistant to contamination no matter how you prep it, as long as your spawn is healthy.

I like exo-terra coir, personally.

I get it really cheap from an online pet store.

I like it a lot better than eco earth, which I used to use. Exo Terra is definitely better quality. With eco earth, sometimes the bricks would be very different sizes/densities. It was annoying.

Most of your issues seem to have been addressed, with the exception of the fertilizer thing.  Violet's tens use fertilisers (potting soil casing and grain prep.). Regardless of whether it does anything, her shit obviously grows well.  Each prep uses an initial heat treatment, a 24 hour fermentation period, then a second heat treatment.  I would do something along those lines if I were you, if you want to use that coir for something.

Not saying coir is the right substrate to use, it probably isn't, but if you want to use it, that's prolly your best bet.

--------------------

I spawned some popcorn casings and had double-overlay cause I didn't put enough hydrogen peroxide in my automated aquarium mister.  I only got one mushroom so I cut off the head part where the seeds fall from and put it in a jar of LC and sprayed it all over a tin of PF cakes I made with gravel, cardboard, and bisquick in my microwave.  I think it will be good cause B+ is so potent.
Triggered yet?

Only a square would say "a cube is a cube."

No, this does not look right...
