I am just getting started with mushroom cultivation, friend gave me a p. Cubensis golden teacher syringe few days ago and with some sterilized rye berries I bought on eBay I got 2 mason jars inoculated 3 days ago and they are incubating at 85 right now doing good. I don't have access to large amount of rye berries because they are expensive, but could I use chicken scratch instead? I understand layering, I have already bought bulk amounts of coconut coir and verm and pressure cooked 2 : 1 mix of the coir and verm for 6 mason jars. I have made 2 big terrariums with clear lids all that, but what I am stuck on is the substrate layer, I live on a farm so I have access to large amounts of chicken manure and horse and cow manure would it be a good choice to mix some manure with the chicken scratch? Also when I go on vacation in later July do you have any suggestions on what I should do with my shroom operation? I still live with my parents and currently I know zero local shroom cultivators. Thanks and sorry if some of my questions sound stupid I am new to mushroom cultivation. -JDK

I don't know anything about chickens. But I use sun dried cow poop from my buddies farm. I mix it with coco coir but most guys mix it with straw. There are lots of tek on how to prepare poo and what not. What is chicken scratch?
-------------------- Alright then, picture this if you will: 10 to 2 AM, X, Yogi DMT, and a box of Krispy Kremes, in my "need to know" post, just outside of Area 51. Contemplating the whole "chosen people" thing with just a flaming stealth banana split the sky like one would hope but never really expect to see in a place like this. Cutting right angle donuts on a dime and stopping right at my Birkenstocks, and me yelping... Holy fucking shit!

I suggest you do a lot of research while you are in your parents house and when you move out maybe you will have learned enough to do a grow.

I'd just stick with the coco coir and verm as a bulk sub for your first grow.

So not use coir and verm for the casing, but actually as the substrate? Would it be good to use manure in the casing also? -JDK

I tried manure in a couple of mini tubs and got less than good results. It could have been because of bad genes. But, I've had great success with this tek:

I use large mycobags in my canning PC, and it does take longer to get up to temp, but the ease of a big bag is worth it IMO.
I've had 7 of 7 successful tubs using this method. I lost 1 tub to trich when I used the bucket tek and didn't pasteurize. Then, I had the 2 tubs yield miniature mutant Orissas on manure. I'm still pretty new at this, but I've made a lot of mistakes and learned that simple is often better. I'm cranking out another 4 tub grow as we speak, and I use Frank's tek with mycobags.
