looking good my man. did you case those?

they are speedy. probably 3rd place for speed for me. tyc, toc, stro. maybe tied with thai lipa yai.

if your getting aborts. could be a dry substrate. i don't see alot of beeds on the surface. but i also didn't zoom in. i find it easier to hold the proper environment in a tub than any tray culture. id call shoeboxes tray culture.

I don't think I cased those ones... I did several shoeboxes and some I put a thin coir only casing on and some I didn't. I generally haven't done casings but I think I may start trying them because I seem to be having problems with surface drying despite good moisture in the sub.

These shoeboxes I intentionally tried to stay hands off because I felt like I was over-doing the amount of attention, but the shoeboxes ended up under-performing and I think it may have partially been problems with surface drying.

I have 2 mini monos of Stro going which I left totally alone and they are both having drying problems of the surface. I think its a combination of the heat in my grow room and it being dry as well.

The pinsets come in consistently excellent when in the knotting / little white dot stage, so I am confident that when I get my conditions nailed down the Stro will be an excellent producer.

Here's a 56qt mono that I spawned with 5 quarts, lightly cased with coir only:

I have several plates of transfered myc from the original spore print and wasn't planning on doing a clone yet... but the mini monos have some good clusters, so I may take a clone.

Eventually I plan on taking some prints for a giveaway

so personally i don't usualy see any drying in tubs unless there is a fan in the room on too high. or, something is loose in the tub. like a polyfil hole or something like that. the other item is, moisture content of your substrate.

i don't mist personally and generally don't have to add any water during colonization, pinning or fruiting. i put all the ingredients into the tub. change my filters not stuffed as tight a few days after pinning. then just harvest. i could leave my house for a week and come back to fruits without having to observe anything. but i make sure all the ingredients and the environment are perfect when i spawn. then you don't have to do anything. just find the right recipe for your environment, and you won't have to do much else. this is why i prefer tubs over observing things like fruiting chambers or tray culture that tend to dry out a little more often and require watering often.

i don't even like misting after 1st flush. i either flood the substrate or just dunk it for an hour. then pour the water off. put back into fruiting and harvest 5-7 days later. most the time, i don't have to to observe or look over anything and you can still get full canopy flushes with no maintenance. no maintenance is the key.

also,

i went back to no casing. actually i wasn't really casing at all. just putting the top layer of coir like you are. the fruits come out a little smaller in size when i do this. i like the ease of spawning and just laying the substrate out flat. not doing much else. i do like the case at spawn method but ive grown far to lazy and reverted back to the way i used to fruit without any casing. when i began this hobby i used to case everything. got lazy and stopped cazing for about 15 years. tried some new things in the last few years and went back to no casing. just out of laziness i guess. one less step. i guess i could say, its not necessarily lazy but time restrained. so one less step saves me time.

That is definitely the direction I'm trying to move towards and also why I was attempting to stay hands off on all these boxes/tubs. I totally get what you're saying, but somewhere I guess I need to fine tune something. Maybe add a bit more water to my coir and/or readjust how FAE is dialed.

I think my drying mini monos are probably due to too loose polyfil especially since they are minis and not full sized. The shoeboxes I may have put the lids loose too early, and also I left them lidless for a while when there was lots of water starting to pool up.

The shoeboxes actually looked better than any I've ever done before... lots of water beads covering the surfaces, except some started to dry out in the corners. The whole time there was lots of moisture on the sides and bottom of the lid as well. This is partly why I was so confused about what seems like drying problems because there was so much moisture still :justdontknow:

Anyway, I planned on going to more full sized monos soon and this is just more encouragement to do so.

you could try some press n seal with pinholes poked in the top. you keep it on tight. but when i did this i was using taller tubs so i had poly in too. or it looks like bod uses grocery bags. see if that helps. are you running a fan in the room? i don't do this anymore.

I've never ran fans, although for a few days after initial spawning I had a fan running when my AC was out. The boxes are all stacked in the closet (with door open) and the fan was in the middle of the room. But it was just a few days while they were still colonizing.

There is the AC though which isn't always on, but does blow the air in the room.

I basically am like you with the casings. The only time I really apply a light coir casing is when I have some leftover coir during spawn.

Munch, I forgot to ask did you top layer these stros? I’m considering revisiting these as they perform so beautifully.

I'm gearing up to start some fresh cultures from my Stropharia print. I think one of my two cultures I'm using currently may be Stropharia, but I'm not totally sure because I didn't keep them labeled in my fridge when I stopped growing over the summer. So I am going to start some fresh from spore with the intent of getting a batch of new prints made up.

I have one print left. I’ll swab it and try to take some prints early next year. And I just rereard that munch did top layer.

Got any mature shots? They show 3 varying colors when mature.

I am just now starting to really see flushes from the culture I believe is most likely stropharia, the other one I had in the fridge is definitely not.

I don't have any pics of my current fruits and they are currently between flushes. The recent flushes have been producing the larger fruits with big hamburger bun colored type caps that I remember. Still not totally sure tho... I am just going to start fresh to be totally sure.

I do remember a consistent, distinct look to the fruits/caps, and I really loved the way they looked. Some recent fruits have had a really beautiful look to the caps, so much so that I almost took photos of them just because they were so purdy.

But I just don't feel right taking prints without being 100% sure its actually the right culture.

Ya know what, I actually just had a flash memory back to when I was working on these cultures... I did label them, I was just using my own working labels of random words instead of the variety names.

This one was labeled "VALIS" & I just remembered that I originally labeled the culture "VALIStro" - the Stro designated Stropharia.

So now I am sure that this culture is in fact Stropharia. I may have some prints made up very soon then :borfase:

I plan on giving the prints I take out... but I may still end up starting with a new, fresh culture from my original print. Cause I'm still feeling a bit obsessive about removing all doubt that it may be a different culture. Perhaps I will feel more comfortable after seeing a few more flushes if I see the familiar looking caps

Either way, I plan on having some prints to give out in the coming months

Alright, I decided to go ahead and start fresh just to be 100% sure or otherwise it woulda been nagging me in the back of my mind.

Just finished swabbing a batch of plates with spores, so hopefully will see some growth soon & will plan on just doing enough transfers to get it looking clean before dropping to grain.

Will plan on taking a bunch of prints from the first flush once it gets there

Back on track. I swabbed two plates. One of syzygy and one of stropharia. Stropharia germinated first.
