Depression: What Has (and Hasn't) Worked for You?

Thought it would be nice to have a thread where us sad sacks could share what's worked for us.  This can include anything from medication to therapy to lifestyle changes to supplements or anything else.  (I'm talking about real clinical depression here, not just a fleeting period of sadness in response to a difficult life event).

I'll start:

THE GOOD

Most effective medications = Prozac + tianeptine.  I also take a low-dose stimulant (usually 2-FMA) to combat fatigue/amotivation.  I've tried every class of antidepressant except MAOIs, so I have a lot of experience in this area.

Exercise is also helpful but I don't always have the energy for it.  And my pets make me happy.

THE BAD

The worst meds I've tried were Lexapro (awful withdrawals) and the tricyclic antidepressants (rapid weight gain).  And benzos make me suicidally depressed for some reason.

More excercise plus less drugs plus piracetam and noopept.

Mssively helped my social anxiety, daily depression, and ptsd.

Piracetam is a boss compound, I love it.

Having something meaningful to look forward to gets me through most of my bad days.

Staying healthy helps because it gives you real pride

Being proud of my actions helps

Doing stupid things for short term satisfaction is what brings me back down.
Always go for what will make you happy/proud in the long term.

What helped my depression was a very large dose of mushrooms for the quickest cure.  Working out with a proper diet has caused the longest lasting and most prominent cure for depression

I get slammed with depression in about 5 year cycles I've found.

What helps me is self-discovery. Recognizing the changes that have occured in my life, the good, the bad the new.  Looking at everything with new eyes, and moving forward.

A good healthy diet, which is hard when I'm depressed because all I want to do is hide from the world and eat Cheetos.  Exercise, which is also hard because leaving my apartment is a challenge some days. 

THERAPY.  I don't go regularly, but when my therapist gets a call, she knows I need help and I need it bad.  The older I get, the better I get at recognizing when I need help before shit starts getting out of hand.

I smoke a lot of weed, and my therapist says I use it as an escape mechanism. That may be true, but if everyone is allowed to have one vice, that's mine.

I guess making a conscious effort to make healthy choices and knowing that despite feeling like a bag of smashed assholes...I WANT to get better, do better...and be better.

All of these things help me until I start to feel lonely.
Everything spirals downward from there, but I recently quit smoking bud, so I can actually remember all of the little good things that I usually forget about (with weed, I only remember what causes the strongest emotions).
I'm trying to do things that make me proud.
Next step is to start running again.
Those endorphins are like free drugs :wink:

Fulfill yourself. Period. Who cares that whoever thinks what ever, most people are stinks now-a-days anyway. Do what you want, don't let anyone slow you down. You find it fun but no one else does, you don't need them. You will find people, and you will find luck when you are one with your self. Depreciate the degradation and limitation you pose on yourself. If your not doing well, you are lacking. If you are stressed you should stop. If people stress you out you should not be around them.

Everything is logical and simple, but takes time and effort to exert. Think about the saying “we are not humans having a spiritual experience, we are spirits having a human experience”(Pierre Teilhard de Chardin). If we came to this planet to party, than it should not matter if you get dealt crappy cards, most of us do; we may as well dance while we are here...right? I mean, what else is there to do – really?

Clozapine did wonders for me. It helped both my schizophrenia, anxiety and depression. Obviously, anti-psychotics should not be used if you don't have a serious, severe mental disorder but I thought I might as well add to this thread, just incase someone someone else is going through schizophrenia... there IS eventually an end to your suffering!

the realization that a lack of happiness isn't necessarily depression, has helped me immensely. also, that those overly always super fucking happy people... may be the ones with the real disorder. and when i start getting too down on myself, i try to remember to remind myself that someday, im going to die. the seemingly temporary nature of this shit show we call life brings me a great deal of peace.

ive found more often than not, its just a perspective thing.  adjust accordingly.

A heroic dose of shrooms, an experience of ego death, deeper introspective capabilities, increased emotional intelligence/awareness and discovering interests.

A big help has been becoming more aware of my emotions by writing down how I feel when I'm down/anxious and thinking about 'WHY' I feel this way. It usually helps me to realise that I create my own anxiety and that if I don't want to feel this way then I shouldn't think this way.

Cognitive behavioral therapy has been the most beneficial as it has actually changed the way in which I react to my emotions.
The thing is that we can't always change how we feel, what we can do is change how we react to those feelings and that happens by becoming self aware.

Experiencing ego death from a heavy shroom dose was what I believe the catalyst to my growth in self awareness.
Meditation aims to experience ego death, shrooms do it.

When I can actually stick with it I found exercise and eating healthy is the best cure. But I get lazy and fall back into my benzo alcohol cycle. I need to start working out again :rolleyes:

Depression is the best thing that ever happened to me.  It's a gift, and it makes me a unique, driven and purposeful human being.  As soon as I developed high level goals in life, I started getting depressed.  I've been fighting a war ever since in explosive style.

DAMN SON! That is exactly the words that I've been looking to spew out of my mouth. I'm only depressed when I want more.

If my goals for the week/month involve enjoying time with family and getting bills paid, I'm as happy as happy can be.

But when I crave the otherness of being something more then the regulars, that's when I see the long road ahead of me. That's when the misery starts. Time to bathe in it I guess.

I think most depressed people suffer from motivation and lack of energy, dissapointment.

I really think physiological depression and day to day depression are two entirely different thing

for one from day to day it'd most likely be with re-occuring thought patterns, while the later may be to just return to your seat and shut up.

What do you mean clinical?  A doctor's stamp of approval?  I'm talking about something that for over ten years has seriously made me consider if I want to keep living or not.
