cobweb or poor rhiz?
    #21819622 - 06/17/15 04:16 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

Hey guys, I have two jars with rye. I'm wondering why jar #2 looks more "flat" like cobweb/tomentose, if that is...?

It's not like a normal myc. like jar #1.

Is this cobweb or tomentose mycelium only in jar #2

Jar #1

Suspect jar #2

Jar 2 does indeed look off to me.

Thanks for the reply. I haven't seen cobweb yet. So I don't have real life view experience.
I just thought it's the beginning of cobweb. Cause it hasn't rapidly grown. Still the same. Or can it start anytime?

Edit: been like this for two days

I don't think it's cobweb. It might be nothing bad at all.

Can you take a few more varied pictures of the jar?

I think both look good. Just really tomentose. On #2.

Hey guys...thanks for the input.

I did a monotube with it. Cause I opened the jar to smell it. And it smelled earthy mushroom/mycelium. I thought it would be fine, otherwise I would see cobweb soon I guess

I want to see how jar #2 turns out.  I wouldn't trust it, I hope I'm wrong.  It's a little too white looking for cobweb though.

Agreed. Whatever it was, it wasn't cobweb.

If it smelled good, I think you're going to be fine OP.

Good luck!

Hey man, thanks for the links

The first picture was a good closeup. Haven't seen any good (closeup) pictures to ID cobweb, since many people say it's hard to see, but once you get it, you will understand.

And it wasn't like that around the rhiz. on your first pic. (not the link)

I understand that my pic #2 could look like cobweb when looking at it now, more to the right. But they didn't expand for two whole days. I read that cobweb expands rapidly in 24h.

Ah you see. Those pics aren't cobweb. I thought they were too at first, but they're actually just wispy cubensis mycelium. Cube myc doesn't have to be uniform and rizmorphic. Which is what the point of those pics are haha

Also yeah. Cobweb takes over everything in 24 hours.

I've seen cobweb-like molds(grey and hairy) that colonize very slowly in spawn jars, so the whole 24 hour take over thing isn't always the best indication of whether or not something is a grey mold. I imagine there are a few species of grey molds we can run into, and they probably all don't behave identically.

It's just mycelium ^_^
