Could you make toys fun again?
    #21819024 - 06/17/15 12:50 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

Could you sit down and entertain yourself with just your imagination and some toys? Or has your sense of imagination been too damaged over time? I don't think I could make them fun again unless I was alone with them for years, like on a deserted island. How about you?

Damn really? I just don't have that kind of imagination anymore unless I'm doing psychedelics which isn't very often. I thought it was normal. I got addicted to t.v. and internet in HS and now I just could not have fun with toys if I tried. I haven't had to use my imagination in a long time now.

Yeah this.

Dump a bucket of lego on the floor; your imagination will either soar to things you can create or drop to how much it will hurt to step on a piece in the middle of the night.

Legos yeah

Anything else that requires no logical thinking or building...nope!

I had a hot wheels fireball track thingy as a kid
and I just got so bored of it after building it. Just watching some toy cars drive around in circles for minutes on end.

I had maybe 4 gazillion lego blocks as a kid. Loved them

I bought a new lego set like 2 years ago just to see if I could have fun with them. It was a meh. Too easy.

I have noticed that Lego now treats children like retards. Back in the day a 300 piece set had like 10 pages of instructions. Now it's like 40 pages. Ridiculous. They have a new image for every 2 blocks, it's just stupid

There is a new brand of Lego out now. I Don't know the company's name but the building blocks are like less than 1/10 the size as a Lego piece. So it's all really really small, but very detailed. And you build buildings that exist in real life like the Empire State building or Taj Mahal. It's supposed to be a lot harder than Legos. You could give those a shot.

taking it apart would a pain in the ass too...all those tiny pieces. regular legos could be hard enough if you don't have finger nails.

(first world problems - my legos are too small)

Yes, and I do, but usually it involves some form of drugs or alcohol.

I'm really bad at sports, but I've been wanting to join a recreational league(idk, like maybe kickball?) because I've realized that I don't really play anymore.

There used to be a documentary on netflix about a fantastic city wide art project that was super well funded and well done, like skyscrapers rented out, and actors hired, it was a complex storyline where they left clues for the public to randomly find all over the city and kind of sent them down this rabbit hole of an adventure. The creator said it was to try and get people to play again, because we seem to inevitably grow out of that and start to see the world as nothing but machine like routine, structure and "no's"

It was called The Institute, I'd recommend it, it used to be on netflix but I think it got taken off .

The project was called Nonchalance or the Jejune Institute.

I wish there were more initiatives out there to create more alternative reality games for adults to participate in real time...it seemed to be such a special experience for the random people who got roped into it.

edit:

documentary still on netflix.

Legos have always come with a warning that they are choke hazard.

These new blocks will need a snort hazard sign...

Hope to finish it within the next 5 years

I hack alot, mostly by myself. (hacky sack not computer hacking)

I also still swing sticks around bowstaff style, and chuck spears

Also play with a bb gun, and fireworks, but technically those aren't toys :hehehe:

I like r/c stuff, really want a plane/heli/drone.

As far as setting up action figures and imagining scenarios, ehh, not likely.  I'm more into animating now as far as imagination play, which I always dreamed of as a kid but didn't have the ways and means.  And PC games fill alot of that too.  I like open games like Kerbal Space Program, Space Engineers, and even GTA or Skyrim because I can inject alot of my own imaginings in there, which I also did as a child with alot more rudimentary games even.

You guys say you can still play with toys, yet most of the toys you list are something that has a clear goal or requires no imagination, like legos or r/c cars.

I remember when i was a kid, even a toy from a happy meal was magical. And those didn't even have moving parts.

Then around 9 or 10 i just grew out of it. It didn't seem fun to imagine stuff with an action figure when i had spent all the previous years of my life doing just that.

If you don't have imagination then r/c cars and legos won't hold your attention for long.  Maybe r/c devices can have some practical purposes also (as can legos too in some sense), but essentially children are just exploring their environment and mind.  It's all just nonsense mind play.

I never really found toys in themselves to be fun, it's what you do with them that is fun.  I'm sure I could find a way to have fun with toys, blowing them up with fireworks for example, which sounds like what I wish I could have done most of the time as a kid.

I walk around barefoot a lot so I guess legos only seem mildly uncomfortable to me.

I grew up stepping on these things:

They hurt a lot more than legos.

Not to derail the topic;
I still have quite the imagination, and I think if my inhibitions were loosened a little then I could play with toys similarly to how I did as a little kid.
