ID Request for Melbourne, VIC
    #21818312 - 06/17/15 09:31 AM (8 years, 7 months ago)

Hey, I'm a bit of a noob at this so I read all the information I could find and went for a forage and found a lot of wrecked mushrooms :frown: But then I found some of these little guys which looked good and not toxic so I took a few of them. From my very inexperienced analysis I think they're fine but seeing as I'm new and don't wanna poison myself I thought I'd better check before doing something I regret.

Habitat:
Grows near a canal, in a shaded area by a house. Mostly urban area. They grew dirt with mulch and some light leaf litter.

Gills:
Dark, attached.

Stem:
about an inch in Length usually, diameter is very thin, color is a light brown,

Cap:
The Diameter is a little over a centimetre or maybe 3/4 of an inch, color is a light brown, texture is smooth, spherical, concave.

Spore print color:
Black

Bruising:
darkens the light brown that the stem already was.

Other information:
they were growing in an area less than one metre squared and were all about 20cm apart or less. I don't know if that'll reveal anything.

Psathyrella species. DO NOT eat unidentified mushrooms, although this species of mushroom is effectively harmless, many small brownish mushrooms are very dangerous, they can even be deadly. You almost certainly are not qualified to judge whether or not a mushroom looks poisonous. No offense is intended by this response, just want to get the point across.

So ive been at work today and the place i was at had alot of potential for some quality subs so i had a look around... I walked away 3 hours later with some really cool and interesting finds  Im aware not many if any are active but would love it if someone can fill me in a bit on these marvellous bastards! Most were found in mulch or very rich and slightly decomposing soil, in the vicinity of pines, gums and some garden sleepers...
Thanks alot

For the most part you have one or several Mycena sp., quite a few who look comparable to what I would
call M. epipterygia in my part of the world. More close up shots and a description would help though, look
for a thick gelatinous pellicle that is easily separable, comes off almost looking like a contact lens.

I see a variety of other mushrooms as well, might be Inocybe or something else, better pictures and more
info needed. The red small one on the log looks like a Cruentomycena viscidocruenta (or is that one called
Mycena now...?).

I don't think anyone is since you can't tell whether a mushroom is toxic or not from looking at it lol.

Ive got 2 pockets of my front yard with subs so I'm pretty happy and fortunate about that, I'm just waiting on them to mature... What is the ideal level of maturity for maximum potency?

Thanks alot for sharing ur knowledge and experience mate. It never ceases to amaze me, the immense differences from shroom to shroom, when they're pretty much the same thing!
Are the mycena pictured poisonous or are they just inactive?...

Could these be what u were describing Anglerfish...
I found them in a thick collection of small height tree ferns, they're very, very fragile bout most also contained alot of blue colouring before i even touched them... If u need a closer look, more of a description, dont hesitate buddy coz im going away 2morro and they'ven been begging to come too!!!
Cheers
P.S. Im curious as to your opinion on a few other specimens that peaked my interest if u dont mind taking the time mate  Some where found on rotting wood, some were in the middle of a collection of tree fern and some were found withe good, quality dirt, some decaying branches and mainly (apart from the red/orange/yellow ones- they were on the wood or growing oput of it... Thanks heaps, I appreciate it!!!

my father would disagree and he got 60+ years plus experience of mushroom picking (wild culinary types) and not single illness or death in family

You misunderstood. If you know the species then yes of course you can. But since we don't have microscopic vision or anything like that it's impossible to look at a mushroom and see what's inside it. That's what i meant lol
