Seriously why is Canada so far behind the states in cannabis legalization?

I think with the way our drug laws are set up there is no meaningful way for individual provinces to legalize as Colorado and Washington have done while it remains illegal federally. Plus for years we have had a united right and a fractured left, allowing the Conservatives to stay in power with few votes.

@ least minor possession is not treated the same way as it is in the US.
Imagine getting sent to jail, do not pass go and collect $200 lol. Really going to jail being processed and having probation and a criminal charge for life.
Most people in Canada just have a minor thing to do in court and that is it. Or at least that is what my friends tell me. One has been caught with it 4 times and he is only asked to make a donation to charity in court. He takes the tax receipt and fills it in his taxes

The US is the influence for why most countries keep it illegal.
I have heard that Jamaica would have it legal if it weret for US influence.
same for why they made a ban for us citizens to buy cannabis in Amsterdam. US influence.
if US legalizes the rest of the world will follow IMO.

I see they decriminalized small amount I don't see full legalization which is what OPs talkin about.
haven't been to up to date with cannabis legalization lately because it seems inevitably close now.

Yup the pussies in charge here in Belgium even allowed sativex for MS patients.
I guess Big Daddy America's influence is doing great all around.

In a large portion of the US, possibly even the majority, small possession of cannabis is a fine and doesn't count as a criminal record. That is the case here in Ohio for possession of less than 100 grams.

Well, the tangible factors at present are that: 1. The Conservatives turned back our medical cannabis laws, and we are now having to go through court challenges to overturn them which takes time -- they did not kill the movement, but they set it back by changing legislation. They also set it up so big corporations can profiteer off of sick people, but that is a slightly separate matter from your thread really.
This is further evidenced by the response to the current situation in Vancouver where the city government wants to provide legislation for compassion clubs so they can be taxed and the Federal government insists that Vancouver has to instead crack down, but won't do anything about it themselves. Similarily, several years ago in Montréal one of the compassion clubs was involved in turmoil over being raided despite operating on legitimate premise under provincial Québec law.
2. The Convservatives have made it very clear repeatedly that they have absolutely zero intention to make cannabis more accessible to adults and more difficult for children to obtain.
Potential for progress at this point mostly depends on the next federal election -- if we end up with another Conservative government then expect the current state to continue.

i always thought canada was way ahead of everyone else in the cannabis department.. tough luck..
i swear sometimes i just want to say fuck it and plant a couple of mj seeds in my backyard, or even just one, without having to go through all the paper work if at all. makes me really sad that it has to be this way. all decriminalization did was popularize mj to the an extreme. it made a big deal out of something that wasnt suppose to be. but then again it brought awareness to the kind of people who were, and still are, running this place to the ground..

In 10 years it will be legal for recreation in NY & CA By that point in time, the federal government will release their grip from it, and the dominoes will fall. Until NY makes a bold move on it many states will remain stagnant.
I think the north east legalization will start with either Maine or New Hampshire.

Not here in Mormon land. Possession of any drugs or paraphernalia will get your license suspended for 1 year. Plus misc fines classes and probation
