Pastywhyte said: What kind of sugar? Typically you want a starch in the mix. Without one the mycelium will get lazy and have a hard time leaping off. Simple sugar will likely work for germination but I recommend transferring to something with a better nute source before trying to inoculate grain with it. You want the culture as vigorous as possible when you put it to grain.
I used normal kitchen sugar. What is your favorite starch to use? Would BRF work? Does adding flour make it clump up? I made these without since I didn't have any on hand and wanted to test out the PC.
Green Rabbit, I LOVE your signature pic and name! Right on to you!

I really want to get into edibles after a few cube runs (especially oysters <for their tenacity, tastiness, and oil eating abilities>, shiitakes and enokis <I cook a lot of Korean food>), keep us updated!

You simmered the grain in coffee water?
I tossed a tablespoon our two of fresh grounds into the simmer water. Plenty of actual coffee ends up in my grain jars as well. I don't notice increased colonization speeds or anything, but I have tons of coffee that was given to me as a gift that I don't want to drink, so I toss some in from time to time. I haven't really tested with or without with an isolate, so I don't know if it really makes a difference. Giving the cubes a variety of food to much is a good idea though, I don't think anybody would argue that.

Gnarly AA+ ms monotub. Had a lot of side pins despite using a liner. Didn't matter to me because AA+ looks so damn cool and yields high regardless:
