WOW! These oysters will eat anything! (Update....Fruits!!)

We compost all of our kitchen scraps outside. We collect all compostables in plastic containers in the kitchen, and take them out when they are all full (every week or so). I've been growing oysters lately. I throw all of the stem bases in with the kitchen compost. When I went to take all of the compost out I found this in the two older containers.
That's egg shells and broccoli stems and who knows what else.
----UPDATE------FRUITS----- I had poked holes in the side of the containers, but nothing seemed to be happening. I decided to open them up and take a look today. One has started looking like an old tub of compostable vegetable matter, all slimy and gross. The other one is full of fruits. It even looks like a few have grown and died since the last time I looked at it. I left the cover off and gave it a good misting. We will see if they get big enough to harvest.

They're amazing aren't they. They'll turn dn near any organic waste into food. To me that is straight up magic.

I can't remember who but someone on here grew some and had them fruiting off of old socks and other material.
Staments has a picture in one of his books of them colonizing human hair.

The lignin and cellulose content of cotton is really high. I might try that as a sub someday. The thrift stores are throwing old clothes away.

How should I go about trying to fruit it? Wait another few days for it to colonize the whole thing? Then open it up and case? or should I just cut some holes in the side of the container (it's just an old yogurt tub)?
I've heard of growing them on things like denim or newspaper, but usually with some degree of sterile procedure. This just blew my mind when I saw it, and I had to share. I'll keep you all updated if I get any fruits out of it.

Drill 8-12 1/4 holes in the sides, and one at the bottom because id be willing to bet there's puddles at the bottom. Casing it would take up more energy for minimal gain, and most people don't case oysters just do logs, pails or bags with holes in em.

That's probably what I would do right there.

8-12 holes? even if it is only a 32oz yogurt container? Should I drill the holes now? or give it a while longer to see if it gets 100% colonized? Thank you all.

I didn't realize it was such a small container.
I would do one in the bottom and a few on the sides. You could probably just use a knife and turn it to create your holes.

-Gr0wer, that's awesome. Keep us updated if you get any fruits out of it. I just punched some holes in my containers (one of them drained a lot of liquid out the bottom) and put them in a shady spot out back.

Will do, it will probably be a good month for the bucket to fill and colonize. Ill supplement some sawdust layers to help growth, maybe even dust some gypsum in to help speed things up. I cracked the lid and rested it on top to help with gas exchange.

Given the fact that they are growing on old rotting vegetables, I'm kind of surprised green is the only color we're seeing.
