I wonder which strain is better for monotub environment, formosanum or neo-japonicum

Well these are gonna be done in a monotub cause that's how I roll. When I get around to greenhouse build I might do a side by side but for now these bad boys look like they will be ready to spawn tomorrow. Still debating a sub choice but will probably just rock some sterilized coir verm and fuel pellets like I did with my other reishi grows.

Just spawned these to a mini mono. 3 quarts of sterilized coir, oak fuel pellets, and a little verm. Pretty much my usual mix. Spawn ratio is a little lower than I usually do when sterilizing wood but they seem pretty aggressive so I figure it will be fine. Spawn smells exactly like g lucidum does. Should have some worthy pics in a couple days.

Its snarling through the sub pretty good. I spawned this tub thicker on one side so that it has better balance when I put it on its side. At this rate I'm expecting to fruit in 3 or 4 days.

I suggest you case it if you have material and will to do it. It help with excess water, it helps with keeping sub moist (it takes long time for reishi to be grown) and if you don't plan to water it every day than this is good choice, and for the last, it pins nicer IMO/IME

I'm not sure about casing ganoderma. Won't it all fall down when I flip the tub on its side? I know Muda cased his bottles of reishi but that's a different scenario. I would suspect any organic material would simply get massively over colonized and even if it didn't, not sure if I like the idea of peat sitting for the month its gonna take to fruit. Maybe a straight verm casing. Maybe.
Got any links of someone doing this?

I did that. Only one time though. I got so much reishi from it that I still have it in freezer and some as tincture in fridge. I don't know how I could use any more reishi, even now I have too much of it.
Why would you flip the tube? Don't flip it and the problem = solved. Even if you flip it, most of casing would remain unless you shook it on purpose (some wouldn't ofc). My casing (mostly peat, 80+%, some verm and CaCO3) didn't get colonized at all. I mean, only the parts where fruits grew did get colonized. And that made it really easy to pick mature mushrooms beacuse they weren't so bonded with substrate, twist&pull was enough. Without casing you need a knife. My casing didn't get contaminated or anything and I had it well over a month. PH is essential. If you don't get it high enough, it will mold. If you do, than it really shouldn't.

I flip the sub cause it prevents pooling and encourages pinning. Worked pretty good for me in the past. When I tried not flipping it was when the metabolites pooled and caused problems.

Lol, interesting idea to get rid of excess liquid. If you flip it than don't use casing. So I guess it boils down to flipping or casing.

Got a few blobs coming in. Colonization was a bit weak compared to my lucidium but I might do some culture work with it to get some vigor going. Possible that its maybe a bit more picky in regards to substrate composition.

Well Jake I nearly forgot about this thread. The tub spawned in open air succumbed to bacteria and I tossed it. But as you know I did do some that I colonized invitro in bottles, they seem to be doing far better. The antlers I did get on the tub were pretty sweet tho, black and brown in color

Thanks eat. I actually put the lids back on them ajar to keep a nice microclimate going for them. Let them blobs get established. Gonna toss a little coir to late case a couple of them as well. See how it does. All I am really hoping for from this grow is some cleanish spores to play with.

No. But muda did some cased ganoderma (forget what species) anf they did really good. I never cased lucidum.cause its so aggressive i figured it would just blow through it. But these are not nearly as fast. Got some blobs already forming so it might just keep the early stage fruits moist via casing and let them get a nice jump once they hit the FAE.

The bottles I cased were Resinaceum. I opened them up right away at 100% colonisation but kept the holes sealed on the monos I was fruiting in until the pin set was well established.

Well I never got to casing these but they seem to be doing better than the mono attempt. 2 don't look that great and one needs a scratch but I have enough fruit bodies forming that I am quite hopeful that I can get some spores and some harvest.

Ganoderma neojaponicum was described in 1939. This culture from ATCC though was collected on bamboo, or so it says.
Ganoderma meredithae from the southern US also grows on pine, but I suspect G.meredithae is a synonym of G.curtisii since curtisii grows on pine and spruce in New England. If you have a curtisii culture I would say give it a try on pine.

Thanks for the info.... I just recently found G. resinaceum growing on my purple sugar cane. I was just getting ready to try and grow the neo-japonicum on it. Maybe I will add some pine to it. I was chopping it down for the pigs and cut it into pieces for them only to find a piece made it out of the pen. It was fruiting right off of a 9" x 1 inch piece of it just laying on the ground. Big blob of mycelium coming right out of it. I looked at the roots where I chopped it down and they were completely engulfed in mycelium and it was still trying to send shoots up. Freekin weird.

One of the containers started to go bacterial so I have upped the FAE and got rid of the offender. One of the fruits started to melt down and some blueish mold was moving in. The remainder look decent tho, hopefully the extra FAE helps encourage some pores to form.

I don't even sweat mold on reishi. It never really seems to amount to much of a problem.

Still slowly growing along. They hit the lid actually. Might set up the SGFC and pop em in to hopefully see some spores soon. Maybe a big FAE jump will help.

Well these guys finally stopped growing. No spores tho, but did have some mold starting to grow on em Gonna do some culture work with em and try again in spring and get my GH going. Better temps and more FAE should do em good. Was a good learning experience tho and I got me some nice fruits to make some tincture with, so worthwhile in the end.
