Substrate sterilization

I purchased a sizable pressure cooker and have been trying to figure out the best substrate mix to use and it seems to me the best choice is a horse manure mix. I am wondering if anyone knows the best way to sterilize it. I'm not sure if that's something I can do in a pressure cooker or not.

Yea, what he said. 140-160 Fahrenheit for about 60 minutes. Put the jars in a pot with water and heat them up.

Does that mean I just wasted money on a pressure cooker? Or will I still need it for whatever I use for casing?. I also can't seem to figure out what mixture is best for casing.

Your PC will be your best tool. Use it to sterilize pf jars or grain spawn.
What kind of grow are you working on?

I have been told to use horse manure....so what would I be sterilizing? I have 2 spawn bags right now and 18 pint jars. In a couple weeks I'm have to start the casing process

You would sterilize the grain witch is that those grain spawn bags are made of... I like to pasteurize whatever im using for 3 hours plus. But for future reference, now you can make your own spawn bags, jars of grain and pasteurize in your pc without pressure , or with if thats possible. I never tried doing it under pressure, is it possible ? Anyway, you can now make any grain, pf substrate you want with ease in bags or jars to inoculate with spores Agar wedge or Lc .

I'm confused cuz I have never done this before. I have 2 spawn bags I purchased. I don't know how to make then and not sure I am. My only concern right now is figuring put what I'm going to use for casing what I have incubating now and then possibly making my own substrate for jars. I was told to get a pressure cooker but if I am pasteurizing my substrate not sure what the point of a pressure cooker is.

As of right now, you dont need it per say because you are past that point. You can still use the pot to pasteurize your horse manure . And sterilize your casing when you are ready. I meant in the future you can now make everything on your own that you have one. Its hard to explain every way of sterilization because its different methods to prepare different things.
When you are at full colonisation on your spawn bags , you will need to prepare the substrate you choose as, manure, coir, Vermiculite straw or a combination and pasteurize the mixture. Ive sterilized my substrate before when using coir but as stated, manure works best pasteurized and the longer the better especially in summer when mold is rampid and temps are warm, humid

spawn(mix with substrate=grain or pf cakes
substrate= horse manure, coir or other (pasteurized)
casing (goes on top of substrate)
I would recommend doing some more research before starting a grow.

I have already started a grow and I have done quite a bit of research as well. I was supposed to have my friend who has a lot of experience helping me but he's too busy right now. I have had trouble finding good tutorials on casing. It was my understanding that once the cake was was ready and you started the casing process that you just needed a layer of your choosing on top of the cakes. You are saying I need a substrate mix and something else on top for casing?

casing stuff
more info on casing
you can use your pressure cooker for spawn. you don't have to do a casing though cubes do perfect without casing.

I think I should stop asking questions cuz I really have no idea what I'm being told to do right now.

If you are doing cakes then all you need to do is soak them and roll them in Vermiculite. Search dunk and roll.

The whole purpose of casing...or so I thought...was to increase the yield by increasing the surface are and ideal conditions. So I would be casing the cakes after I slice them up into 3rds

I would recommend leaving them as cakes for your first grow. There are a ton of ways to increase your yield but it also increases your chance of ruining/contaminating your grow. But if your are dead set on spawning your cakes then crumble them and mix them with pasteurized coir or manure instead of slicing.
