What's Your Hobby?

Aside from drugs, what are your guys' hobbies that you're truly dedicated to?
Mine are surfing, fishing, and diving (snorkel or SCUBA).
Playing in a co-ed flag football league is up there as well but it's for only a few months out of the year.

Computers for sure. Recently installed a custom water cooling loop. The nice part is that even though it looks amazing and is fully functional, it's never finished so I'm able to constantly research and add new components.
Other than computers my hobbies are golf, surfing, snowboarding, and sports in general.

That's awesome. Growing up I was really dedicated to learning about web design and computers in general but over the years I somewhat lost interest. I'm just now trying to get back into it by building my own desktop. One piece at a time..It's gonna take a while but will be well worth it.

Right now, not much that's very serious. I guess you can say my ecig stuff has reached a hobby level. I have some peppers growing. Past couple of years I've always had a huge garden going but didn't plant for summer this year really. I fish occasionally, but lately haven't had any luck so haven't felt like wasting the time. I go shooting pretty regularly although haven't went in the last few weeks. I wanna get into reloading my own ammo but that requires some equipment I don't have the money for right now. I've gotten back into gaming recently.

With my face against the floor I can’t see who knocked me out of the way. I don’t want to get back up but I have to so it might as well be today. Nothing appeals to me no one feels like me, I’m too busy being calm to disappear. I’m in no shape to be alone contrary to the shit that you might hear. You can't wake up, this is not a dream. I think I need to add "messing with my vape" to my list as well since for the past 3 months I been spending at least 30 minutes a day tinkering around with coil builds and DYI'ing juices. Juice thang only for the past month.

How often do you you go into these float tanks?
Everything I've seen and read online about them seem like such a great experience.

Great. Been doing it for a handful of years now. Also a part of manufacturing new prototype tanks. I dig it. Floaters are generally blissed out happy sort of follk, so it is good community.

Reading, video games, hunting for new music, and researching history. My only really outdoors-y hobby is going wandering for hours at a time when the impulse strikes me. Theres unfortunately not many interesting nature sites around here that don't require a pretty lengthy drive otherwise I'd hike fairly frequently
-------------------- "I have no way of knowing whether you, who eventually will read this record, like stories or not. If you do not, no doubt you have turned these pages without attention. I confess that I love them. Indeed, it often seems to me that of all the good things in the world, the only ones humanity can claim for itself are stories and music; the rest, mercy, beauty, sleep, clean water and hot food (as the Ascian would have said) are all the work of the Increate. Thus, stories are small things indeed in the scheme of the universe, but it is hard not to love best what is our own—hard for me, at least."

Cool. I saw a lot of people mention drawing in the thread. I draw quite a bit myself but not so much lately. My avi is one of my favorite drawings I've done in the past year.
My friend scanned it and colored it in for me using photoshop but you can check out the original black and white version in the Trippy Art Gallery here titled as "Mushroom Nymph."
I bring this up because I've been trying to find it myself and haven't been able to do so since I submitted it. Help anyone?

How has no one said plants yet? Or did i just miss it...
Gardening is awesome, hiking and camping too.
Anything music related for the most part is awesome as well.
I love immersive stories such as books movies and shows.
Anime is another great one, so much incredibly diverse and intriguing shows / movies. Many of the best stories I have gotten into were animes.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned gardening either. I live in an apartment so my garden is a 7'x 15' balcony. Currently have Basil, Cilantro, Rosemary, Cherry Tomatoes, San Marzano Tomatoes (just germinated the seeds 2 days ago), 2 Yucca trees, Garlic, and 2 Hibiscus plants for decoration.
How about yourself?

Of course mushroom cultivation is a hobby, and an amazing one at that but we already have a huge subforum dedicated to that.
What kind of fishing do you do?

These days i like to play around with music production software. Teaching myself music theory and such.
Its like an infinite puzzle.

Mhmmm, fresh basil is amazing. Same with tomatoes, busting out a fresh sauce with both is delicious
I need to work on my herb garden, I really want to get into mints and tea plants too.
Right now I mainly am focusing on tomatoes and peppers.
Off the top of my head I have a Kaleidoscopeic Jeweled tomato, Cherokee Purple, deluxe rainbow, some sort of roma, and at least one or two other heirloom varieties. I started the deluxe rainbow from seed but everything else I got at a nursery already pretty big.
The peppers I started almost all from seed, and I have: Turkish Red, Japanese, Magnum Habenero, Mayan Red Habenero, Jamaican Hot Chocolate habenero (one of my favorites), and some various jalapeno's.
I just planted 3 or 4 peppers and 2 tomatoes into the ground and have 2 of each outside getting used to full sun before I plant em too
I really want to get some garlic going too, and ginger.
What about making hibiscus tea with your plants?

Motorcycles (working on and riding them, I go for a ride whenever the weather's nice and I want something to do), I've taken up downhill biking since there are so many great trails and mountains where I live now and the friends I've made here got me into it, camping (often when biking), drawing, brewing beer, video games sometimes although I'm not as interested in those as I was when I was younger and had no other real hobbies so I just play casually/occasionally now.

Yea, I can't wait until I get my first batch of San Marzanos ripe.
Last summer I ended up canning about a dozen jars of a basic garlic, tomato, and basil sauce. The difference in taste from that sauce compared to your supermarket variety is just inexplicable. I like to make a lot of Caprese salads as well but Buffalo milk mozzarella is quite pricey so it was a once every couple weeks type of thing.
I've never even thought of making Hibiscus tea. I know that the petals are edible but I'll have to look into it. I'd imagine the tea would have a very nice, sweet taste.
I'm envious of all your varieties of tomatoes and peppers. Those are my 2 favorite types of produce to grow but with the limited space I went with the herbs instead since they save me so much money. I'm in the process of selling this apartment & move into a house where I can have a proper garden.
About how big is your growing space?

Yeah it is almost ripe veggie time! I can't wait.
Home canned stuff is so damn good, so much better than store bought stuff indeed
Caprese salad sounds pretty intense, super Italian
All the dankest cheese are pretty taxed, I found some Organic cheese recently but it costs way more for less...
I only thought of that becouse I have had some delicious hibiscus coolers and stuff, and I love tea. I may have to try growing some.
They are definitely some great plants, sorry to make you envious! Herbs is a smart move in that situation, they can get pretty taxed where as tomatoes are pretty cheap.
That's awesome you are selling an apartment and moving into a house! My grandma just sold a house finally after slowly going broke.
The house I am living in came with a small greenhouse which has been devoted to peppers and tomatoes mainly, then I bought a cheap 100$ greenhouse on ebay for all my other plants in the winter. The yard is pretty big too but came with no real garden beds, just some flower beds. But since moving in we have put up several decent sized beds in the back yard.
So pretty big, I live with my mom though and she is a big gardener too so we have to share all the space.

Sounds awesome. I've lived in apartments/condos for all my close to 30 years on this planet.
Once I move I'm probably gonna bother you with some inquiries regarding flowerbeds and greenhouses.

Thank you, it is pretty lovely. The neighborhood is super suburban though, my house is actually surrounded by 2 apartment complexes and 2 other houses.
I used to live in an apartment myself when I was younger and lived with my dad. I wouldn't have minded it if it wasn't for all my little siblings.
Was a 2 bedroom apartment and by the time my dad moved out he had 3 kids not including me and a cat/ dog...
If I were to move out from my moms it would no doubt be an apartment unless I shared a house with several people.
I bet you are excited to upgrade! I don't know how much help I would be but feel free to ask, I would gladly share whatever I can with you.

Right on, musiclover. It's not necessarily an upgrade moving to a house because of my current location down the the street from the beach.
It's more of an upgrade in lifestyle as I won't have to deal with noise complaints, I've only picked up my guitar once every couple months for the past 2 years which is so sad considering I started playing 16 years ago and was devoted to it. Also having that space for gardening among other activities, no nosy neighbors, finally being able to grow weed again, being able to host parties, the list just goes on...
@Sprinkles: A friend of mine's dad truffle hunts in Southern Italy. He's trained his dog (I'm not sure which breed) but says that training pigs to do so is where it's at. They can sniff out the fungi a lot easier. Did you want to find truffles to make some money or to eat them yourself?

Well the beach is nice but so is having a nice sized space of your own to make exactly how you want it! I have never lived near the ocean except when I was younger up in Canada but I do imagine it is pretty amazing. Especially if you have a view of the ocean from your abode. I can picture that being lovely. Even just being able to walk down to the beach must rock.
Lifestyle upgrades are nice. Fuck noise complaints and nosy neighbors.
I hate when things get in the way of playing music that is very sad, get ready to pick it back up!
Gardening and growing weed are some great pluses for sure, I wish I lived in a more remote area and could grow in my yard aparment HS kids would just steal it
Parties are great too having fires in the yard and stuff, list goes on indeed.

That's awesome your're starting to play ball again.
This time of the year playing outdoors here in unbearable. I'm pretty sure we had this conversation last summer lol
But, yea man. It sucks because the local parks shut off the lights after 9pm which is the only comfortable time to play. During the day with the heat reflection or refraction (one of those) the temperature on the court will get up to 120 degrees. Factor in the constant 70%-90% humidity of South FL and it feels like trying to play ball submerged in a hot tub.
I'll still play once every few weeks indoors at the gym but the problem is that they are legit over there. We get a lot kids coming in for pick up games that are college players from UM, & FAU (both men and women) and it's just embarrassing for me trying to play with/against them.
Since we're on the topic of basketball, did you watch the Warriors win the championship tonight? It was a badass game..the whole series was great to watch.

I really like how you phrased your definition of a hobby.
I hadn't thought about it that way before but you're absolutely right. My 3 favorite hobbies I listed are things I do by myself or with 1-2 friends max , and with no intention of monetary gain.
It's always done purely for enjoyment.

My most recent addition is Swimming. Oh my Lord how I love swimming. I spend 2-4 hours 5-6 days a week at my local pool now. I am quite obese and its very hard for me to find exercise that wont hurt my tendons and joints. With swimming, I'm weightless.
I'm so happy in the water too, it washes away my woes.

Kung Fu! Thats awesome! One of my best and first friends I got high with (he died by mushroom poisoning) was a crazy Malaysian who was very much into especially Pencak Silat. After we got stoned he taught us kids (we were teens, he about 35) Silat moves, it was really awesome, we had such laughs. Arifin was his name, God Bless his soul.
Anyhoo he got me bitten by the martial arts virus. When I lose enough weight Im going to enroll, I already shopped around local Dojos.

Lots of ice fishing in winter. In summer we fish alot on the Minnesota River for Channel cats and Flatheads. Walleye and Northerns are fun time as well. Trout fishing is also great in the winter. I just got into bowfishing Carp which has proven to be challenging, but very fun! You fish?

I've been going at muay Thai pretty hard for about 5 years. I can hang with pro boxers and Olympic prospects now so I'm gearing up for my first muay Thai fight. I've done boxing bouts and a lot of grappling tournaments already but this excites me to no end. I played jiu-jitsu for almost eight years but only trained my ass off for the first three or so. What kind of Kickboxing? What part of the country?

Silat is actually indigenous Southeast Asian martial arts. Kung Fu (in western society) refers to Chinese Martial arts. There are some parallels though.
Also, be careful to not call a Kung Fu school a Dojo. Dojo is japanese; most traditional Kung Fu practitioners refer to the training hall as a Kwoon.
Unfortunately most Kung Fu schools in America are either Wushu, or very watered down forms of a Traditional Chinese Martial Art (TCMA among MA forums).

Chinese Kenpo? This seems a little funny to me as Kenpo is basically a compressed version of the martial art I practice after coming from China to Japan. Most Chinese martial artists hate the Japanese styles; so it seems a little odd that the Chinese would be teaching a Japanese art.

I think? i'm not an expert
I really want to do that shit but idk kenpo is more focused on attacking and GL finding a chinese guy wanting to teach here in EU.
and Kempomasters usually only do stance training the first few years (shit is AWESOME!!!!)
I just want to balance stances on a slackline. See it as a form of meditation

It's even harder to find a Sifu of Chinese origin who still teaches within his tradition where I'm located. Eastern Europe has a fair amount of respectable Kwoons. Especially Russia. I got lucky. My Sifu is from Hong Kong and still prefers speaking in Cantonese. His English is pretty hard to understand at first. Hung Gar Kuen also focuses on stance work in the beginning. Kenpo is essentially Hung Gar Kuen appropriated by the Japanese.
Kempo is just another way to write it. Depends on which form of romanization you're going by.

How do you test yourself to know if that shit even works in kung fu? I would assume you throw on gloves and go at it but it seems like a lot of schools are built on phoney respect for the teacher where no one questions his techniques or legitimacy. In my town and in my experience 95 percent of schools are just bullshit but mabey there are kung fu places where you really do get to train.

You get back what you put into it.
Traditionally kwoons do not include free sparring into the curriculum. That is up to the students.
It weeds out the ones who aren't serious.

So there are guys that get after it in kwoons? Do they make sure to use the "curriculum" or do matches devolve into wrestling/brawl?

Yes there most certainly is; but it's almost never during class time.
There is a big misunderstanding in Western society about the application of Kung Fu. Not all moves found within a form are meant to be applied in a fight. Even the stances are not meant for practical fighting.
Much of the "nonsensical" movement of Chinese Martial Arts are to gain control over your body by developing your coordination and building upon your foundation to give you the added strength that can sometimes be needed in critical moments of a confrontation.
Other moves are purely cultural, intellectual, or philosophical in meaning. These aspects are often not openly shared with outsiders.
TCMA incorporate a lot more than just fighting. It's a way of life.

That's a pretty good explanation. More "traditional martial arts schools" should present themselves like that. I hate the fact that so many folks think they know something but would NOT be prepared to fight. I forgot to mention that I also like rock climbing!

Reading books as well as comic books. (Currently reading Bram Stokers Dracula) Watching Classic horror movies, playing bass guitar, writing songs and poems, listening to kick ass music, going to local metal shows, hiking, watching weird movies, being out doors, gaming.

My mainstays are jogging, hiking, biking and intensive daydreaming. If I'm not doing that I'm probably unhappy. Other than that I tend to cycle through hobbies. Lately I've been dabbling in 2d animation, researching a couple different subjects in books and on the internet, watching true-crime docs, and occasionally binging on video games. I have a garden but don't put too much work in other than occasional weeding and watering most days. I try to give some attention to my dogs every day, and of course I spend time wheeling and dealing to make ends meet but I never enjoyed the pursuit of money myself, that's more of a chore.
Some things that are sort of on the back-burner right now:
sketching/painting guitar sound editing computers though I'm not really good at any programming language, I can build computers and like troubleshooting problems working on cars and small motor devices building sculptures/figures in the woods using found materials finding and collecting artifacts including bottles, coins, maps, books, and other media. hacky sack people watching
