Vermiculite on inoculation needle?
    #21656971 - 05/09/15 11:38 AM (9 years, 11 days ago)

First time grower here, using BRF/PF tek. I was inoculating my 1/2 pint jars and with each jar, I noticed vermiculite being dragged out and sticking to my inoculation needle. Between each jar I wiped of the verm with a paper towel damp with 70% Isopropyl rubbing alcohol and flaming the needle after until red. I know I may very well have messed up my inoculation by not following the tek and wiping my syringe.

Some more info, originally I PC'd for 1 hour and let it cool down for 12 hours (overnight) I covered the holes with masking tape and tin foil, but some of the tops of the jar tops were wet and all of the tapes seemed damp when I removed the foils for inoculation. Is it possible that my dry verm barrier became wet? Am I prone to contamination now? Is it normal for there to be verm coming out? Will mycelium even begin to grow if the overall verm is too wet? Any suggestions or other thoughts as to what happened or might happen? Any input is really appreciated.

As long as you flame after the wipe its fine. Just never wipe after you flame. It is possible that a damp verm layer could have contams grow through it. Since your jars are inoculated there is nothing left to do but wait. Maybe start some more jars and do em perfect. Lots of times it takes a few cracks at it to get it just right. Learn from mistakes and then they are not as bad.

Good luck

Thanks Pasty for your reply.

Just wanted to make an update. It's been about 5 days since inoculation, and am seeing wonderful mycelium growth. No contamination so far in any of my 10 jars. Very pleasantly surprised. Seems my concerns about the substrate on my needle was minor by the looks of things thus far.

A lot of things will seem EXTREMELY important on your first grows because you are so hyped that you are not thinking correctly (overthinking). ..if everything is done to spec just let it do its thing...this hobby is great for teaching patience...

Very true. I've never thought myself to be a neurotic person, but man, every little thing sends me spiraling into worry.

It's not a bad thing to be vigilant, but neurosis is not good. Keep it in check, use it to your advantage.

Final update that I'm making on this -- It's been about a month since inoculation, all of the jars are 100% colonized and some have started pinning, absolutely no contaminations. Very thick, pure, and white mycelium throughout. Going to start dunking tonight. I'm very pleased for my first grow. Really can't go wrong with BRF/PF Tek.

Thanks everyone, for all input.

Ha, I was going to. From the looks of things, I'll have a disappointing yield, actually, it's nothing worth posting about. Something went wrong along the way, or just bad genetics, none of my mushroom children became very large and there aren't very many so far.

Here's a picture of some I have picked. I'm still proud of them and my cakes despite their poor performance.

Yep! I've got the light schedule going and have been misting/fanning accordingly (SGFC). Not entirely sure what the deal is. It's 6 days in, so we will see.
