Gymnopilus Luteus in CT!!! - The Mushroom Appeared to me

so i originally found a large amount of these on 8/24/13 and now i found a single one the other day on 6/14/15! i found them twice in two years! it was literally 2 minutes into a trail at a public park, i was not actally hunting when i found it, literally just walked right by it on a trail. i have gone so deep in the woods for mushies... and it just appeared. the only illogical explanation is that the mushroom appeared to me. i must be destined to germinate this spore print or even donate the fruit for science. someone should analyze it, determine its kavalactone content.
LUUUUUUUUUTE

so pretty (not the full stem) this picture made me realize how bad i needed to cut my nails lol

it smells so fucking good
it doesnt smell like a mushroom, it has a strong, pungent and pleasent odor of fruit and anise. the smell is completely unique, and unmistakable. i could seriously identify these by smell alone without even looking at them, its really a powerful odor. almost like a perfume.
so i have a spore print, didnt get a picture of it yet, actually didnt even check on the print yet because im so confident its g. luteus. im assuming it will be rusty orange, again just the smell makes me 100% certain its legit.
anyway, i dont think a single specimen will produce any effects, so the spore print is whats really important. from what i understand this species is somewhat rare, i cannot find any of its spores online at all. should i donate them? try to inoculate a log with them?

You could fire up a culture on agar with the print and mail the print out to someone. If the mushroom is still fresh you could also clone it on agar.
You could use the culture to make plug spawn for logs outdoors, and also try fruiting indoors on a sawdust block.

awesome!
second report out east that i've heard, but i think yours is first post!
someone should start an 'official gym 2015 thread' and that should be YOU!
nice find!
and ya, trim those nails, esp. if you're a guy!
oh, and why start spores on agar? you already have mycelium in the shape of a mushroom that has successfully mated and fruited. you're rolling the dice and its harder to start from spores. read up!

thanks man haha i might start that thread if the mods allow it!
ive actually never grown mushies so by the time i knew what i was doing and had everything set up it would be rotted, so ill probably dry it to save and do something with the spores

you put the plugs on top of newspaper, and then put a log on top of it? did it make it to fruit or is it still in progress?

Yea I was and still am ecstatic. Looks like the patch is fruiting again too. I'm searching all the streams within a few mile radius of this mulch bed in hopes of finding them wild.

Here is one from when I first found the patch. The others popped up a few days later but got trampled.

The patch is fruiting again so I'm crossing my fingers. Have some stem butts that are taking pretty decent to cardboard so hopefully I can spread them a bit.

That's one pretty hefty mushroom and I think it would be premature to assume it wouldn't have any effect/ there are a few variables but 25 g fresh might provide a threshold of fact and 50 g might be interesting enough - i'd go for a mushroom omelette before is in very nice shape in otherwise a quick hot and sour soup will do. Enjoy and happy hunting I always wondered about early-season ovoids but never saw confirmation - thanks for providing thoughts of new destinations . G
