Tiny Worms!
    #21813937 - 06/16/15 09:42 AM (8 years, 7 months ago)

I have been a long time lurker and learned much from this site. I have finally produced a problem that I haven't found on this site. I lime pasteurize my straw substrate and my oyster logs colonize beautifully. Then when I move them to the fc, these tiny worms start massing on the outside of my bags! I couldn't even tell they were alive until I put them under a microscope. Here are a couple pictures of what they are looking like. How do I get rid of them?

That looks like fly larvae (possibly fruit fly?).  Can you screen in your grow room better?

Yes I can screen it in better, however the lighting attracts so many bugs even the smallest hole in my plastic sheeting becomes an insect highway :/

I've recently had an outbreak of an orange colored verzion of these wormy pests. It happens from time to time, you just need to take steps to eliminate it and then hopefully guard against it in the future.

First of all, toss all those infected logs in the compost. They need removed from your fruiting environment before they spread more worms and flys. Any mushrooms you harvest from them will still likely be covered in the worms.

Empty your space and clean/disinfect it complety.

Screening in your fruit chamber is a good start but most if these flys that lay these eggs/worms are so small screening doesn't help all that much. You need a completely sealed growspace, well screened,  filtered ventilation and sticky fly traps can help to.

I discovered that my problem started during incubation. My straw logs were being infected before I ever brought them into the fruiting room.

So think about screening or sealing your incubation space to.
