Mushroom patches as grey water mycofiltration
    #21813136 - 06/16/15 12:29 AM (8 years, 7 months ago)

It is well documented that wood-loving fungi, especially Stropharia rugosoannulata and Pleurotus spp. are effective at filtering and digesting many types of chemicals that humans don't want in the environment.  E.g.  Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, oil spills, DDT & other pesticides, etc.

It has also been mentioned that mycofiltration could also be used for grey water systems, but I haven't been able to find much information on this.

With a grey water mycofiltration sytem, the mycelium would be given water drained from sinks and a bath tub/shower, which would be mostly water with some soap (and a little pee)

Could the same enzyme that cleaves hydrocarbon bonds act to digest soaps?  Is there any evidence that mycelium would digest soaps?

Could someone also explain what the chemistry and/or bullshit is behind 'biodegradable soaps'  and what kinds of soap would be best to feed a bed of stropharia and/or oyster mushrooms?  Assume no detergents will be used for laundry.  Dish soaps and body soaps are important.

Lastly, to avoid the inconvenience of taking the hike to the compost toilet, is it reasonable to pee, or pour diluted urine into the grey water pipe, which would directly feed the mushroom patch?  I believe if oyster mushrooms can grow on pure coffee grounds, some high-nitrogen urine would probably only help fertilize them.  What would be a sign to watch out for from the mushroom patch that they are being over-pissed-on?  What could some human's piss contain that should not be allowed in the patch?
