i see...i suppose that makes the AA75x more valuable in that case. i'm sure its more efficient with the element in the water instead of under the pot...i found one for $650 on ebay and it cost $75 to ship. i was looking for 9 months, though

I wonder if there's a way to build up the space and make a gasket with silicone

Have you thought of getting a cheap stand-alone propane burner for $30 and a solenoid valve with timer?

I have several outdoor burners but I know nothing of this solenoid you speak.
Also on the main note: a blowtorch and a hammer later I have fixed my pc. DO NOT TRY THAT AT HOME KIDS.

A solenoid is like a gate valve that shuts off electrically (when the timer tells it to). You can put one of these on your gas line to your burner, set it for 2 hours and walk away.

Disclaimer: I have no actual experience with solenoids.

Problem I would have with a burner and a pc is dialing in the gas right. My outdoor burners have little between off and full blast.

Mine are like that too, dial it in once and don't adjust it, ever? Sounds good to me.

Lol but I'd get impatient and wanna turn it up to build pressure initially

you should slowly build up pressure anyway unless you're cooking food.

You want to heat it up initially at first? Solution:
1)put a solenoid on the line, set to open for 2 hours,
2) then put in a 'y' connector to your gas line. Now you have 2 gas lines coming from one propane tank. Put a ball valve(or other appropriate valve) on both lines.
3)Adjust the valves: one for high heat, one for low heat (to keep it at 15 psi when it's hot).
4)Put a solenoid valve on the line with the high heat. Set the timer on the solenoid valve to open the gas line for 30 minutes or however long it usually takes to heat up. Once that valve shuts the low heat valve is still open.
5)Join the 2 lines back together with another y connector and connect that line to your stove. Stove valve is on full open all the time.
--- bodhisatta: why is slow heat better?

Since when? I thought we usually crank stuff up on high and keep it there to vent and build pressure and turn it down to the "maintenance" temp once our target pressure is reached?

because we're not sterilizing liquid, we're sterilizing hydrated grain. PC times for liquids like in canning foods (hence why they always tell you to make sure the liquid is filled up to near the top) or agar require far shorter sterilization times. grains don't homogenize heat like a liquid media does. the slower you bring it up the grains are all at sterilization temperature by the time you are at pressure. the steam does penetrate but there's no reason to rush things when the cycle is already more than a couple hours if you include heat up and cool down then there's really no good reason not to spend a couple extra minutes doing things better.
and yes you can turn it up a bit to get to boiling to get steam to come out but once you put the weight on you should throttle it back then, obviously people do it the fast way but I just find it slightly inferior myself.

I still don't see the advantage.
Let's say you spend 1 hour to come up slow, then 15psi for 1.5 hours.
You could also spend 30 minutes coming up fast, and 2 hours at 15psi.
I'd guess the second method is more efficient and effective.

it really doesn't matter too much, I just don't like to go full throttle to get to pressure it takes what 10 minutes instead of 6 at full blast. I do grains 2 hours at 15 anyway.
