Safflower seed

I bought a little sack of safflower seed WBS. They're a common ingredient in WBS but usually only in small amounts so I figured I see how they do on their own. The rinsing was relatively painless although they all float so I had to pour through a potato strainer. Got them soaking now.

Not sure how I should prep these. I'll probably try the method I got from Pussyfart I've been using lately for WBS which is soaking them for about 6 hours and then PCing without drying.

This brown crap is odd. It looks just like bacteria. It wasn't there after the soak but after the 2 hours of PCing. I'm going to try doing a simmer on the next batch see if I can remove this crap then because the only thing I can think of it was released somehow by the heat.

So I tried simmering some and apparently when heated these change color and start foaming, but only once at which point they stop floating too I'll try to make use of them but unless some magical happens I don't think I'll be buying these again. The consistency of them is so much like sunflower seed hulls now I almost wonder if they'd work better as a bulk substrate.

I have successfully grown spawn on pure safflower seeds. From my experience, it took longer for spores to germinate but beat out wbs and popcorn in colonization times. But still I have also successfully grown spawn on chickpeas. Maybe you could give them a try also.

I was thinking whole sunflower/safflower seeds would be an excellent supplement for sawdust spawn.

First sign of growth off of the agar chunk
You know I've had brands of WBS that just turned water into sludge after simmering it. It wouldn't surprise if these seeds the responsible ingredient.

The safflower seeds do look a little wet. Also if mu recollection is correct, my safflower seeds we actually split partially open which gave the myc access to where the nutrition actually is. It's going to be tough for the myc to penetrate that hard shell.

You can see colonization speed. Same jar after 20 hours of growth.

How'd you go about splitting them?

I would soak them over night and then boil for 10 minutes. They would only be split slightly at the tip and would open more as the myc colonized them
