San Pedro cutting with root husk?
    #21809609 - 06/15/15 07:51 AM (8 years, 9 months ago)

So I'm in the process of rooting some mature san pedro cuttings.  I'm noticing that some of them, instead of having the clean, star-shaped cut on the the rooting end, have instead appear to have been cut at the tip of the root system, leaving an inch or less of hard, white husk. I'm wondering will the cuttings with these "husks" root just as easily or do I need to cut a fresh star-shape?

Are you saying the rooting end is a hardened callous with a thick cardboard/papery feel?

As with anything, post pictures of said cactus and "husk"...much easier to help with pictures.

Hope these photos help.  I'm saying that these cuttings were not cut like usual.  I understand what a callous is.  These cuttings appear to be the entire cactus.  The cut was not made to the plant material but to the root system just below the plant.  So they are left with a small section of hardened root system but no live roots.  I'm debating on make a fresh cut through the actual plan material like is usually done (and of course let let then harden and callous)

The cutting was not "cut", it was torn from the mother plant. What you call "husk" is actually the bundle of dried fibers that make the core of cerei.

I find it hard to believe someone would treat their plants like that. :mad2:

I hope this wasn't stolen... But,Yes, you want to slice that off to a clean star shape. You can also go ahead and shave the sides a little bit, exposing more, let it callous, then stick it in the ground. The extra surface are your created will result in more possible locations to shoot roots for faster growth.

Agreed..

Prism, how'd you acquire these pieces?

You could root them either way, cutting and re callousing....or just rooting like it is...i've seen people do it both ways...

Awesome.  Thanks for the info.  I'll make fresh cuts.  These were not stolen.  The owner inherited  a large garden of these cacti from his family.  Been growing since the 70's.  I'll try to pass it on that he maybe should be harvesting his cuttings differently.
