My Dog Barks At My New Boots

How do I get her to stop. She's acting neurotic about it and is starting to distrust my old boots too. I have to lock them in another room so she can't see them. She doesn't mind when they're on my feet but when I take them off she goes nuts. Should I just leave them out longer for her to adapt. It's been about a week now and she hasn't gotten over it yet. I've had the same boots since I got her as a baby a year ago so I guess she's used to my old boots and is confused about the new ones.

if she is that young i would just let them sit out so she gets used to them
my cat used to freak the fuck out when she saw or heard plastic bags. we think its because she was abused the first few months and put into one
well, shes 16 years old now and they dont bother her at all. she'll walk right up to it if she has a reason to

I've had her since she was 8 weeks, so she's never been abused or even yelled at. The worst she's had is an ugly look once in awhile. I guess the only thing possible is for her to get used to them, but it sucks when she starts barking when I get to sleep so I put them away. It's funny as hell because she howls at them too. She's a 14 pound shiba inu and has one hell of a little howl.

Use positive reinforcement. Expose her to the boots and every time she is near the boot and doesn't freak out give her a treat. The dog will learn to associate the boot with food.

Your boots are haunted. No choice but to take them out back, sprinkle holy water, perform an exorcism, and burn them.

Not gonna burn them. They just smell weird and she doesn't associate that smell with me. Treats are probably the best way to go.

Wear your boots around her in comfortable environments and assert to her as alpha as they are a non-issue and something to not be interested in.

Separation anxiety or something, I'd talk to a dog trainer or have one come over. You'll hear that howl at your boots and shoes forever.

Does she do this with other random objects?
My dog is afraid of the weirdest shit and will go ape shit if you hold it up at her. It basically extends to any new object, and a few others that were present the first time she stepped foot in my room. No clue what her deal is.

Mine goes nuts over the vacuum as well, but that's kinda to be expected. It's loud and they don't like it.
If I hold up my foot stool she'll start going insane, if we leave an empty box on the other side of the gate and she notices it when we take her out (or any object out of place out there for that matter) she'll start barking like crazy, if I put on a hardhat she'll go crazy, if I approach her with pretty much any object bigger than a tv remote she'll start running around and going nuts. I've never had a dog (or any animal for that matter) so seemingly afraid of everything.

so the dog who incessantly barks at inanimate objects is the smart one, and the human who wants to help his dog relax is stupid and needs to be trained?

Was your dog a shelter dog? Because my last terrier that I had was, I didn't adopt her until she was 8-10 years old, and I strongly suspect she came from a domestic abuse household, just based on the some of the idiosyncrasies she had.
For example, whenever somebody in the house yelled, she would always pretend like she was sleeping. Her eyes would be wide open, but she would breathe heavily and even snore to act like she was asleep.
The other thing that really bothered her, is whenever I was cleaning up the kitchen floor with my hands, she would always get pissed off and bark at me whenever I did that. The only time she ever barked at me.
Which made me wonder, "What did she witness that caused her to get mad at that?" Did she witness a murder where somebody had to clean up or scru

lol people always assume their animals must have been abused because they have some weird trait. people also like to believe that because their animal is sick that the neighbors must have poisoned them.

maybe it makes people feel better about themselves? They are a hero cause the animal was a victim of something terrible.

Dogs can actually tell you a lot of interesting things about themselves or their past by their idiosyncrasies and the way they behave. It's just that most people tend to ignore them, or chalk it up to nothing. It takes somebody who is a lot more instinctual, somebody who can read animals, to truly understand what they are saying.
Remember the video of that dog leading that led the Alaska state trooper to a home that was on fire? I guarantee you if anybody else saw that dog freaking out in the street except for that cop, they would have assumed it was just some random dog spazzing out for no reason. Nobody else would have thought it was an animal trying to express a dire need to tell you something alarming. The owners of that home are very lucky that the cop actually decided to listen to what the dog was trying to tell him, and decided to follow him on gut instinct.

Uh no. I've had several dogs throughout my life, and only that 1 terrier I believe came from an abusive home. I have another dog who is terrified of all other animals and people, but I strongly believe that was because she was a stray (which she really was), and had traumatic experiences with other animals and possibly humans from being a stray.
She exhibits all the classic symptoms of PTSD, but she doesn't show the same idiosyncrasies as my terrier, that would indicate she experienced any type of domestic violence type abuse with previous owners.
If I wanted to be a hero, I would have adopted a beagle that was performed cruel lab experiments on.

FYI Sprinkles, I would like to add that my first dog (a husky) really was poisoned one time by neighbors. One of the neighbors down the street (whom I had never seen before) rang our doorbell one day, showing up drunk, bitching up a storm about how my dog, and my next door neighbor's chihuahuas barked all the goddamn time and kept him awake all night. (Our dog almost never barked btw so we were just confused)
Then a couple days after he showed up, my dog became really sick. We came home to find him foaming at the nose and mouth, vomiting, walking really dizzy like he was drunk or something.
All 4 of my next door neighbor's chihuahuas got sick at the exact same time too, and 2 of them even died later that night. We strongly believe that pissed off neighbor fed them food laced with rat poisoning or something.
My family and the neighbor with the chihuahuas even went to the police about it to file a report, but since there was no proof, there was nothing anybody could do. That guy was later kicked out of the homeowner's association and kicked out from the community though.

I talked to a dog trainer this morning and gave her the information you provided.
She wants to know if they're made of any type of sheepskin liner or any fur related. On that note, are you around a lot of interesting scents such as other animals or trekking in the woods sort of thing?
Trainer says it's a mix of anxiety, not tiring her out enough (she should sleep when you sleep), and likely that the dog sees the boots as part of the pecking order. The dog might be trying to elicit a response to assert dominance but since they're a material item, she will continually try and assert dominance to no avail.
But of course the trainer says since it could be any number of things to just hire one and nip it in the bud *now*. This is from 20 years experience as a vet tech and trainer.
Your breed is going to take awhile. Take off your boots in front of her, assert dominance over both her and the boots. Discipline her when she acts up. Don't acknowledge the behavior as acceptable in any way. Don't acknowledge the dog, stay calm. The more relaxed you are the better, and the more of a non-issue you make it, she will (ideally) cut it out.
Best of luck OP.

I put the boots next to her bed which is right next to mine. We hike every day and play frizbee in the yard a few times per day. She sleeps when I sleep with no issues other than the boots or to chase a noisy cat who won't shut up. She's pretty much over the boots now and slept next to them. She's actually the smartest dog ever but stubborn. She can tell me anything she wants. She's been at my side since she was a baby and she's also a service dog for seizures. She knows every little thing about me and has a wide range of vocals. I know if I'm going to have a seizure by my speaking and blips in consciousness. I don't have them anymore but there's always the threat. I got her the license more so she can go anywhere with me and just know how to behave. I let her do what she wants and has learned with me what's acceptable or not by my body language, not a lot of harsh nos and treats. We definitely have an understanding relationship. I don't let her off leash though because shibas run on trails or roads until they get hit or find a bear. It's a behavior left over from hunting bears and boars in their past when automobiles weren't a problem.
